There was no warning, no heads up, no sign at all as to his attendance… but at exactly 1858 hours the chime to Bailey’s quarters rang. Outside the door, in a beat-up old brown leather bomber jacket, grey USMC t-shirt, blue jeans, combat boots and a OU ball cap stood the Dresden’s Commanding Officer… Colonel Calvin Harris.

A smile broke across his face as the door open and Harris asked. “Think an old fighter jock could join the party?”

Harris

Charlie was a little blind sided, she had never expected the Captain to accept her invitation but then she figured that perhaps that was a failing on her part for not knowing the Captain as well as she should. With a warm smile she enthusiastically nodded and welcomed him in. “Of course Captain, it would be my pleasure, can I get you something to drink sir?” she asked, a little unsure as to how much military decorum was followed at these types of gatherings. She hoped someone else would arrive soon that she could take a cue from.

The Marine smiled fondly and then chuckled. “I’d love a drink. Jack & Coke on the rocks if ya don’t mind…” He paused before his smile widened. “… and please, Harris or just Cal… your pick. This is after-hours and the last thing I want is people uncomfortable with the old man around. I’m here to have drink, play some cards and enjoy some friendly company. That’s all.”

Charlie chuckled and nodded with a grin. “Of course, coming right up Cal,” she replied as she wandered over to the replicator, returning moments later with his drink and an assortment of snacks which she placed on the table. “Please, help yourselves…” she added with a smile, just happy that people had actually turned up.

Domingo and Katie arrived shortly after the CO, their hands linked together. He stopped just shy of the door, his nerves making him hesitate. Looking at Katie beside him, Domingo smiled weakly.

“Are you ready?” he asked, as much for himself as for her.

Ensign Chavez, Sec

Katie smiled softly at him, loosening her hand from his grasp to wrap her arm around his waist and squeeze him comfortably to her. “You’ve got this,” she commented, answering his true question instead of the one that he had asked, nudging him forward as the door opened in front of him. Only many years of counseling training kept her from reacting to the sight of the CO in front of her and her arm dropped quickly from Chavez’s waist as she blushed lightly. Biting her lip, she forced herself to return her arm to its position and led the way into Bailey’s quarters, focusing her attention on the friendly ensign.

“Thank you for the invite, Charlie,” she greeted her.

Lt Cmdr Nunn, CNS

Charlie noticed the slightly awkward body posturing between the two officers and gave a brief grin at Nunn’s reaction to seeing the Captain. “It’s my pleasure counselor and it’s nice to see you up and about Ensign…” she remarked to Chavez. The last time she had seen him had been in sickbay just before her own unfortunate stay there. “Please, do come in…” she added as she ushered them into the room.

Domingo had an awkward smile on his face, his initial instinct to turn right around and leave as Katie’s embrace left his so quickly. He wasn’t able act on it before her arm returned to him, which settled his jitters and sealed his escape path. He lifted a hand in greeting as his awkward smile softened into more of a grin.

“Hi everyone. Thank you for the open invite.” He said to the room.

Ensign Chavez, Sec

Charlie smiled warmly at the handsome young man, she could see why Katie liked him. “You’re very welcome Ensign,” she added as they walked past her to greet the Captain. Charlie’s thoughts briefly went back to the last time that the counselor had been in her quarters and she gently took Katie by the arm and whispered to her. “Don’t worry, I promise I won’t break any mirrors or bones this time and I’ll try not to end up asleep on your lap…” she giggled and gave her a quick wink. “So, drinks?” she said louder for everyone to hear.

Katie managed to keep her steady arm around Chavez’s waist, but Charlie’s tug separated them just enough to keep their exchange private. She returned the ensign’s giggle as she recalled that night. “Well, that will certainly make this a lot less interesting,” she commented, her giggles seeping through. As Charlie directed her attention to offering beverages to the group, her giggles trailed off and the arm around Chavez’s waist tensed briefly as she recalled the nightmare that Charlie had woken her up from. She felt a slight prickle of cold sweat on the back of her neck, but visibly shook her head as if to shake the memory off of her.

“A drink would be wonderful, whatever you’re having,” she finally said, pulling herself back to Chavez to lean against him slightly more.

Lt Cmdr Nunn, CNS

Domingo also wrapped his arm around her waist in response to her leaning into him.

“I’ll take whatever is easy.” He responded to the inquiry for a drink.

Ensign Chavez, Sec

Harris cleared his throat softly and said to the group as he took his drink. “I’ll tell y’all the same thing I told Charlie… I’m here off clock, at a private gathering. I just want to enjoy a drink and relax. So, just Cal or Harris… ok guys?”

Harris, CO

Katie smiled easily at Harris. “Then I insist on being Katie,” she returned back to him, eyeing his beverage with envy. She couldn’t wait to see what Charlie produced, but that looked like a mighty good start.

Nunn, CNS

Domingo was still smiling to the point his cheeks were cramping. He hadn’t had to smile this much in years.

“My friends call me Ding.” He responded cordially.

Ensign Chavez, Sec

Charlie had a quick flick through the replicator menu and produced a small array of colourful cocktails which she brought over to Katie & Domingo. “Don’t ask me what they are, I just thought they looked interesting…” she chuckled as she offered up the tray to the couple then took one for herself.

“So, who’s ready for some cards?” she asked with a grin as she produced a deck of cards.
