“That’s quite a gash you’ve got there, Ensign,” Elaine said as she straightened up enough to grab a dermal regenerator to repair said gash, “What did you do this time?”

The Engineering NE grinned, “You know me Doc, my own clumsiness got the better of me again. I removed a piece of panel to repair some conduits, and ended up tripping over it at slicing my arm on the sharp edge.” the NE winced as the CMO got to work, and looked around eagerly to distract himself from the feeling. “Is Enj in today?” referring to the CMO’s small dog that she tended to have in Sickbay with her.

“Enj?” Elaine looked up briefly from her work, “I’m starting to think you’re injuring yourself on purpose in order to see him,” she joked, returning to her work again. “He’s sleeping in my office right now. You can go see him after if you want.” No sooner had she said that, however, the yellow alert started up. “Then again maybe not,” she looked up apologetically, as she finished repairing the last of gash. Although it could hardly be called that anymore, by the time she was done you couldn’t tell that there had ever been an injury. “That sounds like you might be needed at your station.”

The NE barely admired the repair work, before shrugging on their uniform jacket “Thanks for the fix Doc, say hi to Enj for me!”

Elaine smiled and shook her head to herself. Leaving the remaining few patients to be looked at by some of the nurses, she went to attend to her own Yellow Alert Protocol, thankful that she had left the dog in her office when she had. Without Enj underfoot, and with Sickbay relatively empty for the moment, she might be able to take the chance to inspect her staffs reaction, so long as Sickbay wasn’t needed.

At that very moment, the ship was rocked by the alien weapons fire. Main power went offline instantly, casting everything into darkness. Emergency power flickered, causing lights and consoles to blink intermittently.

Several consoles exploded in showers of sparks and debris.

Elaine let out a small startled cry and flinched away from a nearby consol. Her easy to trigger reflexes were a source of teasing amongst the staff, but nobody was laughing now. Instead medical staff personal bustled around sickbay prepared for any potentially injured crew members from other areas of the ship. After spending the last four years on a combat ships, she recovered quickly, straightening herself up as she assessed the damages Sickbay had taken. The muffled distant barking of Enj in her office made her heart ache, but he wasn’t locked in so she imagined it was his way of letting her know he was okay.

“Ensign Lucia,” she called, flagging down her subordinate and somewhat friend, “Can you gather a small team and do a quick triage of sickbay before the other decks start comming in?” unbidden the image of Bailey lying on the floor, obscured by a biobed popped in her head, “Make it thourough and don’t take their word they’re okay. I want as many staff members on their feet as possible before the rest of the ship comes in.”

NE Lucia nodded and quickly moved off to follow her orders. Elaine gingerly moved away in the direction of her office a hand cautiously feeling everything she brushed past, helping her guide her way through Sickbay after the sudden loss of light. As she reached her office the doors slid open on their own and a black and white ball of pure fulff, rushed out at her. Elaine let one hand drop down to brush the head of the excited dog while her other one tapped on her comm badge. =^= Sickbay to Bridge: We’ve lost power here. Are we under attack? =^=

She tapped her badge a second time =^= Sickbay to Engineering: Can you send up a small repair crew? We’ve lost power and a couple of consols have blown.=^=

=^=I have two engineers on their way to you.=^= Ellie said =^=Gavin and Esther will be there momentarily.=^=

The doors to Sickbay opened, and in walked a crew member, dressed in a blue accented uniform. Janvier might recognize this as Ensign John Waverly, the Junior Counselor on board.

The man was cradling his arm, which appeared badly burned. He was breathing heavily and it was obvious that he had been crying. He managed to stumble over to Janvier, slumping down next to the CMO, using the bulkhead to prop his body up.

Janvier immediately crouched over the Ensign her hands flying to her belt to pull out her tricorder.

“She’s dead,” Ensign Waverly said, sobbing. “Counselor Rix is dead.”

That got the CMO’s attention, and her eyes saddend with sympathy. “Ensign James take Ensign Surak with you and… attend to Counselor Rix. Lucia, can you let Enj out. I might need him.” she ordered, swallowing a lump in her throat. It never got any easier hearing a new crewmember was dead and the young CMO had to wonder if it ever would. But now was not the time to grieve, not when she had a patient to attend to. Grieving would come later once this was all over and she was curled up in bed with Enj.

Was it possible the ship really was under attack of sorts? Bridge had never responded to her question. Good officers were dead and comms seemed to be down. She had no idea what was happening on the rest of the ship which made her uneasy. Without an official status she didn’t know how many casualties to prepare for and if the comms really were down it would make it hard for people who really needed it to get help.

“Do you want to tell me what happened?” Elaine asked, using the question as a distraction while she gently tried to pry his arm away so she could complete her proper scans. It also might give the doctor a better idea of what was going on.

A small holiday bump

bump

“There was a man and a woman,” Ensign Waverly said, taking in some deep breaths. “They appeared out of nowhere. They seemed to throw these energy balls at us from midair. Then the man placed his hand on the Counselor’s head and she fell over. They just killed her and disappeared.”

As Waverly spoke the CMO ran the dermal regenerator over his arm while he was distracted. What he had to say was sobering though. Elaine bit her lip, hoping that the two Ensigns she had sent wouldn’t run into those same entities. But one question plagued her, why had these people killed the Counselor and not Ensign Waverly as well? If they had the power to annialate the Counselor so easily, why had they left Waverly?

Before she got the chance to phrase any questions, Enj came running over, released from the confines of her office. Sensing the Ensigns distress, Enj nosed gently at his uninjured hand and lapped at it. Elaine watched carefuly, hoping Enjs calming presence would help Waverly with his shock as she attended to his injuries.

“Did they say anything to you?” she asked after a moment.

Lt. (j.g.) Janvier & Enj, CMO & dog

Ensign Waverly shook his head. “They didn’t speak. They just attacked.” He mindlessly scratched the dog on the head.

As he spoke, the lights in Sickbay returned to normal levels, and the consoles stopped blinking on and off. It appeared that power was being restored.

“Engineering sure fixed that fast,” Elaine commented, changing the subject away from the attack. It didn’t seem like Waverly was going to shed much light onto the situation and she didn’t want to make him have to relive what was no doubt a traumatic experience for too long. Although it was uncomfortable, not knowing exactly what was going on she would manage.

=^= NEnsign Astin to Sickbay! We need a doctor in engineering, medical emergency! =^=

(NEnsign Astin, Security)

=^= Sickbay to NEnsign Astin, acknowledged. We’re on our way. =^= The young doctor responded, quickly checking her work and happily noting that Ensign Waverly’s burns were now healed. Just in the nick of time too it would seem. She studied the Ensign stroking Enj, medically he should now be fine, but psychologically… she knew what it felt like to lose someone from your department, she had been shaken when Ensign Bailey had collapsed in Sickbay, no doubt Waverly would be feeling the same. “Take some time, Enj will look after you,” she said gently, “If you need anything Ensign Lucia will see to it,” she pointed to a larger older woman, the same one who had brought Enj over.

“Laaral,” Elaine waved over a passing by Trill nurse, “Are you treating anyone right now,”

Laaral shook her head, “No, sir.”

“You’re with me, there’s an emergency in Engineering,” The CMO said briskly, turning away before Laaral had the chance to nod. “Ensign Luica, I’m taking NE Laaral to Engineering. Can you take care of things here until I return?” Lucia nodded and returned back to her task. It briefly crossed Elaine’s mind if it wouldn’t be better to send Lucia than for her to go, but with the worst of Waverly’s woes healed, she wanted to seize the oppertunity to observe the state of the ship for herself. She might even have a better idea of where to send her medic teams to treat injuries.

^= Enginering to Sick Bay, cancel medical teem and prepare for emergency transport =^=

Looked like recon was going to have to wait. Elaine shook her head, “Nevermind,” she told the two Ensigns she’d been ordering about, “Looks like they’re coming to us.” As she spoke Orin’s body transported onto one of the biobeds in sickbay. One look at him and her hopes were low, the Chief Engineer was too still. Although it was saddening to see, she knew not to get her hopes up. She had seen many people who had looked the same. Sparing a glance for Waverly, to make sure him and Enj were doing okay, she took out her medical tricorder to scan Orin.

Lt. Janvier, CMO; NEs Lucia and Laaral

Orin was dead. Ensign Waverly crept over slowly. “Oh no…” He moaned. “No, no no.” He said, shaking his head, sadness deep in his voice. “Is he… is he dead?”
