Willow sighed deeply and looked at the crew records before her. She tossed the one in her hand into the pile and rubbed the bridge of her nose and eyes. The list of people to fill the recently vacated position of junior counsellor wasn’t bad, far from it. She was just looking for something....else.

Pulling the computer towards her she opened the crew personnel files and began a search for what she wanted. Some twenty minutes later she was left looking at two files and considered a moment before opening a comm.

=^= Taylor to Grayson, could you please report to my office. =^=

“On my way, Captain,” Mariah offered after tapping her combadge. She wondered what she had done or not done to earn the Captain’s attention and briefly reviewed her movements of late. Finding nothing she would consider objectionable, she decided to make her way to the office and not borrow trouble.

In short order, she found herself outside Taylor’s office door, pressing the chime.

Willow looked up hearing the chime. “Come in!” She called and seeing the woman in the doorway smiled. “Ah Doctor Grayson, thank you for coming so promptly please come in, have a seat.” She motioned to the chair in front of her desk.

Once the other woman was settled Willow turned her attention to the computer and seemed to ignore the stack of PaDDs on her desk. “Doctor Grayson correct me if I am wrong but your personnel file indicates you are a qualified counsellor is this correct?”she turned to look at the woman as she answered, green eyes watching for the slightest movement.

Mariah crossed the room and sat as directed. Hearing the Captain’s question, she was caught by surprise. It was the last thing she expected to hear. “That’s correct, ma’am. Like all psychiatrists, I earned my medical degree first and went on to study psychiatry in residency with specializations in forensic and trauma psychiatry. My past assignments have always been in psychiatry until this one, and although unexpected, it has given me the opportunity to keep my medical skills sharp.”

Looking from the computer Willow seemed happy with this response. “As you will have seen our psychiatry department has recently lost a member. Starfleet Command have been discussing the replacement staff member with me. While I understand you signed on board to our medical department and not the psychiatry department I was wondering, well hoping I guess, that you would be interested in a transfer.”

Mariah took several beats to absorb what she’d heard and consider her response. Truthfully, the switch to Family Medicine was difficult for her and while she was finding the joy in the challenge, she missed helping people with their emotional challenges the way therapy worked, and although she could provide a great deal of emotional support in her current position, she also found herself holding back, like forcing herself to walk when she wanted to run. She feared judgment, she supposed, of being accused of not doing her job well all because she was used to and missing something else. Was she about to miss the chance for growth all to take the easy way out? What of her patients? She weighed all of it before offering, “I would like to transfer, ma’am. I miss psychiatry greatly and selfish or not, I think I will be happy there. That said, I would like to help out in medical when I can. I just wouldn’t feel right about abandoning my old position entirely. I would clear it with the Chief, of course, and not allow it to interfere with my primary duties or my health.”
