Arrival and check-in (side sim)

“Yes.” Willow said turning her attention to Pope. “I know who you are counsellor and i am aware of Doctor Jarvis. Believe me the pleasure is entirely due to Admiral Davies. Had i my way youd be back on the ship bound for earth. However we need doctors for this mission.” She sipped her coffee.

Jasper sat down beside Pope and looked the short red-haired woman up and down before meeting her eyes, sharp blues locking onto emerald greens.

There it was. She felt as if she were being scanned with a tricorder. Immediately her mind shifted to another doctor whose blue eyes had a similar effect. Instinctivly her right hand rubbed over her clavicle on the right side a moment. Willow stared right back at him as if daring him to speak.

If the look she had given him was the best she had then he was sorely disappointed. He’d heard that star-fleet Captain’s were supposed to be fearsome. Although there was more than one method to dissecting a Denobulan. Perhaps she had found a way to be authoritative without the need to look like a Klingon warrior. Regardless, Pope had asked him to play nice and it would not do to send the woman scurrying to her own counsellor on only their first encounter. Especially if he were to become one of her… crewmates. The thought still burned him, however, it was either this or allow his mind and skills to rot back in New Zealand.

“It’s a pleasure to make your acquaintance, Captain,” he said with a smile. “Forgive my offhanded comment. I was merely suggesting that someone in your position may not have the time to spend on open heart surgery.”

Dr J. Jarvis M.D

Again she sipped her coffee. “I would assume someone in your position would likewise have found himself not able to spend time on such endevours.”

Watching Pope, Willow sighed and pushed a strand of her short red hair behind her ear. “Ok. Lets get down to this shall we. You have met Doctor Walker already. As chief of staff you will answer to him. You are not a starfleet officer Doctor Jarvis and frankly i would prefer you be left where they found you but as i said here you are and as you are here you will follow starfleet protocol.”

She waited to see if he understood.

Dr Jarvis nodded his head slightly but remained quiet. He would likely have more than one grievance with the Captain’s ‘expectations’, but knew that voicing them all here and now could potentially see him on his way back to New Zealand. While Pope had made arrangements with some of the higher up’s in Star-fleet, he had no idea how far this woman’s influence might spread. Clearly it was not enough to stop the placement as it stood, that much she had made apparent. However, he had not yet had a chance to digest the Star-fleet rulebook in its entirety and so did not know what technicalities may exist.

“You will follow the chain of command. You will complete a boarding evaluation with medical and psychiatry and if they deem you fit for duty you will be given a duty roster and remit.” She looked him up and down, the corners of her mouth turned up slightly as if his lovecraftian style attire amused her. “I will also have a uniform provided for you alongside a duty tricorder which will be recorded and monitored for each person you treat, if any.”

Jasper saw the smile she tried to hide and returned it with one of his own. So that was her angle, or at least one of them. Have one of her psychiatrists try and probe his mind and find some reason to deem him unfit for duty. If he’d been able to survive the past year with Counsellor Pope, one session with a starship shrink would be child’s play.

She glanced at Walker. “If Doctor Walker decides you’ll be spending your time on night duty in the secondary sickbay calibrating spare inventory then so be it but you will not, repeat not, be allowed near a surgical frame or a laser scapel until we deem it appropriate if ever. Am i clear?”

‘That wasn’t such a bad idea,’ Brad mused, keeping a stony eye on Jarvis. As it was, finding duty that technically allowed him to interact with people was going to be difficult. The restriction on keeping him out of surgery was also a prudent measure. Maybe he could be in charge of making sure everyone of the ship got their influenza vaccinations…

Jasper kept his expression neutral. He had not expected to be allowed to perform surgery, however, the thought of being stuck calibrating spare inventory was almost enough to kill his brain cells there and then. Pope apparently also had misgivings about this, although Jasper doubted it had anything to do with the duty being a potential hazard to his mental health.

“Doctor Jarvis, despite his transgressions, which, may I remind you, he has suitably atoned for, is a physician of the highest calibre. Surely it would be remiss of you to waste his talents on inventory management when the planet that you are trying to aid is in desperate need of medical practitioners.”

Willow raised an eyebrow. “The nature of my mission is not up for debate here nor is it my place to discuss how much, if any…” Willow looked at Jasper. “…attonement Doctor Jarvis has done. In starfleet we follow.orders. my orders are to accept your charge and i have done so. He will now follow the orders given to him.”

She took another sip of coffee. “If either of you are unhappy then gentlemen i invite you to leave.” She stood again. “I have duties to attend to. Doctor Walker will help you get settled.”

She gave Brad a sorry dude but this guy creeps me out look and turned towards the door.

Brad suppressed a sigh. He turned to the Counsellor, as he had at least already spoken with him.

“I’ve now been fully briefed and read in on Doctor Jarvis’ history, and as inclined as I am to agree with the Captain’s predilections, I also can’t deny your patient’s skills. So here’s the plan: he will work as an expert consultant, offering advice only on any cases involving genetics or cardiology. He may also perform on-boarding physicals without supervision, but will not be allowed to perform surgery unsupervised, and only as the lead if our other staff feel unable to perform the procedure.”

He fixed both men with an Am I Understood? look, before rising from the table.

“Now, I’ve got to get back to work planning for how we’ll assist the clinic planetside. An NE will show you both to quarters, then escort Mr. Jarvis to the Secondary Sickbay for his own onboarding.”
