“Yes, Sir. I will do my best,” said the young officer before turning to go.

As soon as the doors had ‘wooshed’ closed behind her she gave a squeal, clenched her fists, and jumped in the air. “Yes!” She had worked so hard for this position and she deserved it. Still, the weight of it all had yet to really sink in. It had never been a question for her. She had always wanted to be a doctor. She had been a magnificent one. Her service so many years ago on the USS Viking as CMO had taught her so many things. When she met her future husband and fell in love, it had never been a question. She had always wanted to be a mother. She had two beautiful daughters, Shanti and Sadee. They were growing to be extraordinary women. And when her husband died at such a young age, the girls, too young to really even remember, it had never been a question. She had always wanted to continue her husband’s dream of Commanding a starship. She would fulfill the work of which her husband had been denied completion. Today, she was one step closer to that dream.

Lt. Cmdr. Dr. Amari Brooks, Executive Officer of the USS Ogawa. It sounded so… important, so… resplendent, so… =/\=Lt. Cmdr. Brooks please report to the education center. It’s urgent.=/\=

‘What has she done now?’ Amari wondered, real life pulling her out of her glorious stupor. She knew it couldn’t be Shanti. Shanti was just beginning the second semester of her first year at the academy. Besides, it was never Shanti. Sadee, it was ALWAYS Sadee. Commander Brooks turned in annoyance and swiftly made her way to the education center.

When she arrived she didn’t need to ask where she needed to go, she knew exactly. This wasn’t the first time she had been called to the principal’s office. Walking through the doors she saw Principal Walters, sitting on the edge of his large desk, his arms folded across his chest and scowling at a very unapologetic looking 15yo girl. “What did you do this time young lady?”

The girl, not changing her expression in the slightest. simply muttered, “nothing.”

“Nothing?” Principal Walters scoffed, “she rigged the toilets in the girls latrine so that when anyone sat down they received an electric shock. I have three girls in the infirmary.”

Sadee giggled, “they are just being dramatic. The shock wasn’t strong enough to do any real harm.” Her eyes rolled.

“Well, it was enough to frighten them. I had to make sure there were no injuries. Their parents are going to be furious. Sadee, I am afraid this time I have no choice but to suspend you from school.”

“Whatever,” Sadee replied, again without changing her bored expression.

“There’s no need, Principal Walters,” Amari began, “Sadee won’t be back to school. We’re moving.”

Prinipal Walter’s face lit up and he stood upright. “You got it?” he asked, delight clearly showing on his face. Amari smiled and nodded. “Well done!”

This time Sadee’s expression did change. She flew out of her chair in a rage. “What? Again? We just got here. I am finally starting to make some friends and we have to leave?” She was so angry her braids shook as she spoke.

“And now you can make new friends on the Ogawa,” Amari replied, “as long as you don’t go electrocuting them first.”

“Ugh,” Shanti grunted. Her fists were balled and the girl, who had already out grown her mother by a full inch, looked so much like her father. “I- I-,” she stammered, on the verge of tears, “I hate you.” She ran from the office, the doors closing behind her.

“Sadee!” Amari yelled after her daughter, but she was gone. “Turning to Principal Walters her face fell, “I am so sorry, Bob. Her behavior has only gotten worse since Shanti left for the academy. And she is always so angry. Sometimes I don’t know what to do.”

“It’s okay, Amari. It’s completely understandable. Growing up without ever knowing her father has been difficult, and then having such an over achiever for a sister… and a mother,” he smiled. “Congratulations by the way. You are going to be an amazing first officer, number one.” He walked closer to Amari and wrapped his arms around her. “I enjoyed getting to know you. I’m sorry that we won’t be able to find out what could have been. But I’m so very, very excited for you.” He then lightly kissed her lips.

“I’m sorry, too.” She replied and gently removed herself from the embrace. “You are wonderful man, Bob. Thank you for being there for me and for Sadee.”

“It was my pleasure,” said Bob. “I think every thing is going to be alright with her and you. Sadee will understand someday that everything you do is for her. It will just take some time. What she needs now is stability. With this new assignment, I think she will get it.”

Amari smiled, “You’re right,” she said turning to look at Bob’s kind face, “at least until a CO spot opens up.” Her eyes twinkled with ambition and she giggled.

Bob shook his head slightly and then gave a hearty laugh. “And I believe you, Commander Brooks, will get it.”
