There was a distinct look of surprise that appeared on the Betazoid’s face. “Umm, sure,” she said with a nod. “I’m happy to get a handle on what’s happening dirt side.” It was actually kind of great, but she wasn’t exactly sure how or if to say that. To go an away mission right away was pretty amazing, but she had had plenty of experience over the years with these sorts of situations, so while it had been awhile, she wasn’t worried.

“May I ask about another task I’m interested in?” Reez said.

Tressex looked slightly relieved that she hadn’t protested the assignment. He then smiled slightly as she asked and said “Oh my yes! And just so you know, I have no problem with anyone coming to me to discuss… well… anything, I guess. If you have a interest, let’s hear it.” and he gestured to a chair and then took a seat himself.

With a nod, Mel sat down and folded her arms on the edge of the desk. “I’d like permission to continue to study our gastropod guests while they are with us. I understand that we will try to get them home as soon as it is doable, but in the meantime, I…” She paused and her ebony eyes seemed to be momentarily at a loss for words and her voice shifted to something more reflective. “I started my career as a scientist and along the way I discovered I was a good leader. Command suited me until being a Starship captain didn’t fit my life circumstances anymore. This is my first time back into a formal scientist role and those gastropods”-she leaned in slightly towards him-“they’re very special Lieutenant. More than we’ve even figured out. I’d stake my entire command experience on that gut feeling. And… I’m fascinated. I want to learn more, if I can.” It was the best way for her to put it, but the essential truth was that her awe and scientific spark were truly ignited again after what had been a very tumultuous time in her life. For her, this was a path on the way back to finding herself again.

Tressex lisented and when Melaia had finished he nodded emphatically and said “I couldn’t agree more. Absolutely. Once we have finished our mission to the colony, you may absolutely begin your study. If I can be of any assistance to you, let me know. I do not have the experience you have, but I’m handy in a lab!” he said with a grin that flashed all of his canine teeth. “Now, if you can, please compile a list of what equipment you will need and I will have it readied for transport. Once you are on the surface, let me know what we can do, specifically, to assist in the effort and I will coordinate assignments from here. If you need me on-site, let me know and I will come down immediately. I want you to make sure you are looking any climatological and geological data as a priority. The colony will be getting into monsoon season soon, and we need to make sure they are prepared for that. Any questions? Concerns? Suggestions?”

Melaia shook her head. “No, but I know how and who to ask when I do,” she said with a slight grin. “I’ll need to familiarize myself more deeply with our mission, since I haven’t been included until now. Then I’ll have a better idea of where I want to start.”

Rising to her feet, Reez moved towards the door but then looked back at Tressex. “Some people would be intimidated by my experience and resist making use of it. Thank you for not being one of them. Because you see, the bonus about having been the one making hard decisions is that I know what it’s like to be in your place, so I have a better idea of how to support you. I’ll help however I can; you just have to ask.”

Tressex’s fur covered head shook in excited agreement. “Oh, you don’t have to worry. I am sure I will do just that. Thank you very much, Mrs. Reez. Let me know when you are ready to depart.”

Mel gave a nod. “Will do,” she said before leaving the office. She had debated about whether to say anything about the “Mrs. Reez” but had thought better of it. In her mind, “Mrs. Reez” was her mother and if there was anyone she was not like, it was her mother. Well, aside from the drive to succeed and ability to be a leader. And a slow growing temper that when unleashed could melt a poor junior officer. But aside form that, not alike at all.

She sighed. It was easier when she had a uniform and pips. She knew her place and how she fit in exactly. This was… looser and definitely was going to take some adjustment.
