Willow looked at her. “No. He reacted alright! He laughed and told me to tell engineering to bring a straw!” She shook her head and looked at her empty cup. “Better switch to tea.” She said sadly.

Off duty“Is it better?” Mel asked with an exaggerated motion of her auburn brows. “I mean, I’m not sure about that, but I personally have lived off of caffeinated beverages, in particular raktajino, for many years now, but since I’m not a doctor, I can testify to the merits or concerns that might exist.”

Willow smiled. “I dont know but it’s what my father used to say.” She pondered quietly. “I know that as a mother what I’m about to say sounds I don’t know…stupid maybe, but I didn’t want to have children, not really I don’t think. And now well I obviously suck at it,”
Willow
Off dutyReez shook her head. “You’re not required to want and love children, Willow. Some people find it along the way, and some like you are forced into parenthood. I know it’s not the ideal situation in any way, but I do think that what you’re doing for your brother is truly wonderful. Sometimes you just need your family,” she said softly.

Willow smiled sadly. “12 years later and I still feel like I don’t know what I’m doing. And I didn’t really have much of an option.” She shook her head, “anyway enough about the mess that is my personal life, how are the twins.”

COMel exhaled. “They are good. It’s a little scary now that they are so mobile, but I think the other thing that is interesting is seeing what abilities develop and when. We know they are perceptive to external stimuli to a large degree, but whether that is just an infant thing or they are showing early development of pis abilities, I’m not sure. To be honest, for their sake I hope it’s the former, because the latter could be really hard for them.”

Willow listened and nodded as the other woman spoke. “What will you do if it is the latter?” She asked sympathetically.

She chewed on her lower lip for a moment. “Well, luckily for me, as a Daughter of the Second House, I have connections. I’ve not been terribly enthused about using them in the past, but for the twins we would have access to some of the best Betazoid developmental physicians who could at least give us guidance about how to proceed. the biggest challenge and necessity would be to teach them how to protect their mind, even though they are terribly young. And we don’t yet know how strong their connection is with each other. So it’s a waiting game. Once we’re going to have to be vigilant about but also patience with.”

Willow nodded as she listened, it was fascinating if no doubt daunting an idea. “ And have you given any further consideration to my offer,” she smiled slyly a mix of hopefulness in her expression.

CO
Mel gave a lopsided grin. “I did, and then I talked to Jonathan. He was… unexpectedly enthusiastic about it. I was trying to coordiate it with the Xo, but with people coming and going, it got lost in the transitions. But I was just added to the department’s staffng list and I’ve spoken with Tresex recently.” She shrugged. “I’m in, and I’ll be going down to the surface, so-“she leaned-“I’m really quite excited.”
Sitting upright again, Mel sighed. “I know it’s a good thing, for all of us, but is it bad that I’m this excited about it? About being away from the ship and doing something, anything, else? It honestly makes me feel like abad mother.”
