“You’ll find the Klingon’s generator under cover around the side of the building,” Xerdosa called to them as the engineers began to move.

Pilar nodded as she was introduced and waited to get to work “What are some of the things we’re facing down here medical wise?” She asked as she looked around the area.

Head Nurse

Delaney, Sec

Melaia had kept to the back of the group, simply listening and taking in the clinic. She was eager to get back outside, but right now Commander Xerdosa was the focus of her attention.

The clinic’s CO exhaled. “It’s a combo of things right now. Mostly minor injuries that occur here or that people arrive with in their escape. Our last update from the Romulan border indicated that there is a faction stirring up trouble and those that were already vulnerable are being forced to get out of the way. For them, that means risking the wrath of what exists for Romulan authorities and and crossing the border into the neutral zone. Most have been ending up here, but we’re hardly the only place. Just a current focal point.”

“The thing we’re vigilant about is general public health and the risk of disease spreading. So far we’ve been fortunate, but we’re need to be wary. The other side is that the Federation Council is trying to figure out what to do with these refugees and so at the moment we’re more or less given no guidance. Our job for now is to make them as comfortable as possible. But the camp is makeshift and not suited for these conditions. After the storm destroyed a lot of the clinic and our supplies, we’re just trying to keep our heads above water,” Xerdosa explained.

Drake couldn’t help but smirk a little. “It’s mostly minor injuries. What’s the minority? And don’t worry about a perfect surgical setup. You have the one surgeon in Starfleet who doesn’t need an SSF or anything.”

-Dr Drake Marshall

Xerdosa’s brows lifted and she looked utterly unimpressed as she folded her arms across her chest. “Good for you, even if your assertion is entirely wrong,” she said flatly. Given they hadn’t had a working SSF since the storm, there was at least two doctors at the clinic who had potentially been doing surgery without it.

“As for our other cases, we had three traumatic brain injuries of varying degrees in the aftermath of the storm. Some trees on the other side of the site where part of the camp had been located for shelter came down. Big trees. The Klingons came and helped clear the debris, but the most severe of the cases developed an intracerebral hemorrhage that required immediate surgery. Given our clinic was half flooded and filled with debris, it made that patient’s prognosis less than ideal.” Bosede exhaled and her slightly irritated tone subsided. “The patient survived surgery and has been recovering mostly well, but the risk of infection was higher than it should have been and we’re monitoring things closely.” She didn’t like that she had lost her temper, even slightly, but she felt dead on her feet. While some days were better than others, the CO was managing only an average of 2 hours of sleep a night right now. Usually Yirn intervened and covered things, given she needed less sleep than the others to function.

“We also have a Romulan woman who is likely to give birth in the next few days. I tried to convince her to at least move up to the Klingon compound, but she wouldn’t leave her family. Her mother arrived in poor health with a host of issues and the woman also has a daughter. We’ve had no transporters, so moving anyone that way was out. Now that you’re here, maybe they’ll be more willing to be moved in a way that is safer for everyone. We also have a young Romulan boy who has been under the weather and Yirn should be back after checking on him. His mother died from a series of issues shortly after arriving. And that’s not even including the amputation we did due to severe gangrene because the patient had been caught in an explosion and hadn’t had time to get the shrapnel removed from a wound before they had to evacuate and their tiny shuttle had had almost no emergency supplies.” Even listing these particular cases made her feel emotionally exhausted. Long gone was her necessary detachment, though she was good at working on auto-pilot when needed. “Any other questions?”

“If you need me too I can assist with the delivery. I’m Dr. Scott from Pediatrics,” Ally extended her hand. She was not obstetrics but had deleivered a few babies from time to time.

Lt. Ally Scott, medical

Bosede nodded. “That will be helpful. We’ve got a few children here in the camp too. I’ll introduce you as soon as we’re done the tour.”

For his part, the newly arrive doctor assigned to the clinic had gone pale. It wasn’t hard to guess that this wasn’t want Ensign Carr had imagined for his first assignment.

Pilar listened quietly and made some notes on the PaDD in her hand “Okay, show me to what you have set up for a clinic at the moment.” She said and looked at the doctors “I’ll start getting things organized and set up, making things as sterile as possible.” She said falling into her job of Head Nurse and getting things in order for the doctors “I suggest we have a main clinic for triage and treatment of the minor injuries and a second one set up for the more serious injuries and the ill.”

Head Nurse

Willow sighed deeply. “I’m not going to lie Commander, this is not an easy situation for any of us and I commend you on the work you and your staff have done in order to keep things as smoothly organised as possible. What I’d like to do just now is offer you my staff and some supplies to supplement your own in the short term while your staff update mine on the conditions of each patient and my engineers try and get your power up and working.”

She glanced at Drake and Pilar as if to say “this means you two.” Before continuing. “My science team and security team would be best suited to get a survey of the area and ensure we are as safe as we can be and that the potential site for the new hospital is a go. From then I’d like to suggest we transport your patients to the Ogawa for continued treatment with your permission and under your staff supervision of course. This will allow your staff to rest for some time while we look at the plans to get youykur hospital.”

She considered running a hand over her damp red hair. “I will also need to discuss the location of the hospital with yourself and the camp official if there is one as there may be some movement needed there. Does this plan work for you?” She waited expectantly.

CO

Bosede gave Willow a nod. “Yes

Pilar looked at Willow for a moment and then at Drake “My suggestion would be that we take the most critical to the Ogawa, the three head injuries and possibly the pregnant woman and her family.” She said as she looked around “Which way to the clinic that you have?” Pilar asked as she tucked the padd she had with her in her medical bag and slung that over her shoulder. They had patients that needed care and her job was to make sure that the care was well organized.

Head Nurse

“I can handle them here or there, but the Ogawa takes the challenge out of it.” Drake said. A slight disappointment.

-Dr Drake Marshall

Commander Xerdosa looked slightly perplexed at Pilar before looking around the clinic she had led them into a couple minutes previously. “Well, I know it’s not much to look at, but this is our clinic and you’re on the grand tour, such as it is. This would normally be just our reception and triage area, but it’s doubling as our main treatment area as well. Our former treatment area is now surgery and long term care. Patients who can be treated up on the Ogawa can go, but they will have to want to. We’ll have to ask.” The commander actually seemed uncertain if they would or not.

Stepping to the biobed where the young Romulan woman was waiting patiently, Boseded spoke softly to the patient, whom simply nodded and gave a reassuring smile. ”

Gesturing with her head to the Ogawa staff, Xerdosa encouraged them to follow. She moved past through into what was a very small space what the purpose it now served. here was one surgical biobed, with the frame currently removed and actually sitting on the floor at the side of the space. Beyond that was a row of three biobeds that were currently unoccupied. “This is the rest of our functioning clinic. The other side is completely exposed to the elements and we’ve sealed it off. But I’m sure you can feel the slight draft back here. We’ve been able to use our spare power to create a forcefield at times for surgery, but not in days now. And that’s pretty much it. I’ll show you the camp now.”

Leading them back through the half-lit clinic, she took them around to the side of the building. Before them was the camp that housed the Romulan refugees whom had ventured out of their shelters not that the rain had stopped. But before they could go down, a young blond woman approached wearily, though her expression brightened as she took in the Ogawa crew. “Everyone, this is Doctor Anni Rinne, the other doctor on staff.” She looked at Rinne. “How are things?”

“Yirn is still with Remak and Serith, and she’s asked you to stop in when you come down. Everyone else is faring alright, but we’ll have to bring down some more fuel for the fires or else break out the rations.” Ensign Rinne frowned. “Actually, we’ll have to bring down more rations later anyway, so…”

Bosede inhaled as she process the info. “Okay. Captain Taylor and her staff will be settling in to help us. If we can convince them, some of the patients will go up to the Ogawa. Meanwhile, Ketra is waiting for you. I offered to look her arm over, but she wanted to wait for you.” Xerdosa shrugged.

Anni chuckled. “Guess I made an impression. Alright, I’ll go see her.”

“After you’re done, get a list of supplies we need most ready.”

“On it,” Rinne said with a haphazard salute that made Xerdosa smirk before the younger doctor moved into the clinic.

Turning her attention back to Willow and team, the commander seemed momentarily buoyed by the positive energy of her subordinate. “Okay, if one of the doctors and your head nurse want to go back inside and coordinate with Anni, she can get your our supply needs and the list of patients. The rest of you can come with me and Lieutenant Joshi and we’ll show you the camp. Later, we can go up and see the Klingons, if they down come visit first.”

What only the psi-positive crew and those keenly attuned to pay attention to tone and body language would have picked up what Mel had from Xerdosa. Under the authority and calm was a frustration that was easily provoked, as evidence by her reaction to Drake’s comments. Her impression so far was that Bosede was a no-nonsense woman who commanded attention easily. But right now she was exhausted. It prompted Reez to move a bit closer to stand near Willow and whisper. “I haven’t seen conditions like this since the war.” Lots of people dealt with extenuating circumstances in their careers, but those that served in the war or served in front line situations like this experienced a level of peril and distress that could often be trauma inducing. While it was alarming to see, Melaia knew enough to know she could be useful on more than just the scientific side.

~Melaia Reez, Sciences

Willow’s expression was grim. She nodded her head once in response to Mel. Considering Drakes clear desire for excitement she had to send him back. “Pilar, Doctor Marshall. Head back and liase with Doctor Rinne, get the information and then coordinate with commander walker. Contact me before any transportation takes place.” She looked at Ally, “Doctor Scott you can either go with them if you wish or come with us to the camp.”

“I would rather stay here Captain,” Ally said but then gave Willlow a perplexed look. “Captain,” she asked looking around. “Why don’t we just bring down the modules instead of transferring people to the Ogawa? The medical modules are designed to provide on-site laboratory testing in quarantined areas and self-sustaining field hospital kits. They can be erected in minutes and each comes with a self-contained generator and emergency replicator. That would solve the sanitation issues, power, and nutrition issues until the engineers can help erect new emergency shelters or fix the damage here. I’m not an engineer but if we can plug a hole in a ship if it is stacked in ten seconds flat why can we just do that here?”

Lt. Ally Scott. Medical.

“I’ll come along and check out the camp conditions” Rico said, hanging near the back of the group as so far he had little to do by way of the medical situation and had been observing what he needed to. The fact that the main computer was down along with force fields concerned him, but not for any medical reasons. He glanced at Ally who was with the main group then looked back at the makeshift conditions the personnel here were working in, it was a far cry from the Ogawa for sure, closer to what they had seen on Orion in fact.

Lt Vanhall, CoS

Ally pulled out her PaDD and began to type a message. To all around her it would look as if she was writing something official. Her message was far from that. ”Rico…back me up here. Did we not learn something about Helping refugees during the whole let’s perform major surgery using only half of Reez’s clothes and a butter knife at that dinner. I mean sheesh. Let’s roll out the red carpet and serve hor’s doeuves with this group to make their hostile take over easier if that is something even one of them could be planning. I know they need our help but maybe we should bring the help to them so back me up about the dang modules chief,” ally typed out surreptitiously.
