Sadee watched her mom, the Ogawa’s new XO, leave to report in for her first day on the job. She hadn’t really said anything. She wanted to tell her mom how great she looked in command red, or how proud she was that she was fulfilling the dreams of their late beloved husband and father. But she also wanted her mother to talk to her about anything other than doctor stuff or star fleet. She wanted her mother to ask her about… about… about anything. She never asked her about what she liked. Then again, she didn’t know what she would say if she were to ask. Sadee felt as though she had no idea who she was. She was so confused about her own identity. Her sister Shanti was a model student, accepted to Starfleet academy, as if there were any question, and their mother had been so proud. Her mother had not only managed to fulfill her own dreams of becoming a doctor but was well on her way to fulfill her father’s as well. What could Sadee do? What was her dream? Did she even have one. She felt confused and mixed up. Angry, yet set. But also proud, but prideful. She constantly felt on the inside as though she were going to explode. And she had no idea why.

She flung herself down on the bed, her braids slinging across her face. “Ugh,” she exclaimed, flipping a few braids away. Her she was the “new girl” again. Eventually, some teacher, or officer, or other kid, if there were other kids, would ask her about herself, or what she wanted to be. The truth is, she didn’t know anything. She didn’t know who she was going to become and she had no idea who she was.

She attempted to rise from her bed but mistakenly put her elbow down on one of her long braids pulling it painfully. “That’s it!” she screamed in frustration. She walked hastily to a duffel and rummaged around. Finally her hand secured around the desired object. A laser scissor. She walked up to the mirror and looked at her reflection. There was nothing special about her. Nothing unique. Even who braids, which were a holdover from her childhood, were simple, long, and un-magnificent. A look of rebellion glinted in her eye as she raised the scissor to the first braid.

Half and hour or so later and the sink was piled with sheared off braids. She stared at herself for an eternity. Her hair was short. Short short. She ran a hand over her nearly bald scalp… and then burst into tears.

-Sadee, XO’s daughter

A few hours later and the tears were long gone. So were Sadee’s braids. Instead she sported a very short almost buzz cut that was a very bright fire engine red. She smiled. She already knew her mother would hate it.

Later, Sadee heard the doors to her family quarters swoosh open and her mother walk in. Sadee was in her bedrom. She stiffened, anticipating the yelling at she was sure to receive. but her mother came in. “Sadee,” she heard her mother call from the living area, “I hope your first day aboard was as thrilling as mine. I’ve made you appointments in sickbay to see a doctor and also with the counselor and don’t give me any fuss about it. It’s standard procedure and besides it can’t hurt. Also, you are to be in class tomorrow. I hear the teacher is… unusual.” She laughed and Sadee could hear her mother changing from her uniform and brushing. “Anyway, I’ve got to go. I’m meeting some colleagues for dinner. Why don’t you explore the ship and make a few friends. We’ll have breakfast together bright and early in the morning. I love you sweetie!” Sadee heard the door swoosh open and shut. Her mother was gone again.

*She never came in. She never even peeked in.” Sadee stood up and threw her mini padd against the wall. It fell to the floor in several pieces.

OOC: Nice posts, Harley! Can’t wait for her to meet Adrian Sorel and Cai:;

OOC: Thank you and me either. A group teenagers aboard a medical ship. What could go wrong? <BEG>

IC: “Sadee,” she could hear her mother’s voice but it sounded so far away. “Sadee, get up now! It’s time to get ready for your first day.” Sadee, yawned and sat up in bed. She didn’t remember going to sleep. She realized she was still wearing the same clothes she had on yesterday. She drowsily lumbered to the wash basin and splashed cold water on her face. She reached for the silver towel and dried off, looking up into the mirror for the first time. She gasped and nearly screamed, bringing her hand up to her mouth to contain it. She had forgotten the drastic haircut she had herself before and her mother had yet to see it. Immediately she regretted the decision. ‘Stall!’ she told herself, ‘take too long in the sonic shower and maybe she will leave.’

Sadee undressed and threw her stylistically ripped clothes into an unceromonious heap on the floor. She entered the sonic shower and went about cleaning herself as slowly as possible. 15 minutes into the shower and she heard a knock on the door. “Sadde Brooks, sonic showers clean you almost instantly, there is no need to take so long. Hurry up and get dressed. I want to eat breakfast together before we have to leave.”

Sadee realized there would be no point in stalling further. Her mother was determined. She would have to face the music sometime. Might as well be now. She exited the sonic shower and threw on a set of wrinkled clothes she had yet to unpack from her duffel. She threw on her numerous bangle bracelets and slowly lurched out into the living area. At the dining table her mother had sat two places and a steaming cheese omelette lay on each plate. Sadee moved to her seat with no words.

Her mother continued talking without looking at her daughter. “I’m so excited for your first day aboard the Ogawa,” she began her voice in an almost squeal. “Your teacher is Echego Em’ujo, Klingon I believe. Better get on her good side,” she laughed. “Don’t forget after class you have medical and psychiatric appointments.” She turned as she brought a plate of buttered toast to the table. “You have an appointment at 1400 with Doctor…” but she stopped suddenly, obviously noticing Sadee’s ultra short fire engine red hard for the first time. “Oh, my,” she said, calmly. A little too calmly. Sadee winced, waiting for the backlash. But it never came. “Like I said have several appointments today.” She sat down and took a bite of toast.

Finally Sadee had had enough. She slammed her fists down on the table. Amari looked at her daughter in surprise. “Mom, aren’t you going to SAY anything? Aren’t you going to yell? I cut off all of my braids. My hair is candy apple red. Don’t you notice me?”

Amari stared at her daughter and smiled softly. “Sadee, you have had those braids since you were a little girl. It was about time you outgrew them. I didn’t want to push you because you’re my baby and I don’t want you to grow up so fast. But the truth is,” and her mother said this with deep sincerity and love, “you look like a young woman. You look beautiful.”

Sadee sat in disbelief. Nothing, absolutely nothing she ever did ever elicited any response from her mother other than some strange for of approval. Perhaps it was reverse psychology, but Sadee doubted it. She picked up her glass of orange juice, wiped her lip on the back of her sleeve and picked up a knapsack which was laying nearby. “You don’t understand me at all,” she said in a hushed tone. Glaring at her mother she turned and began to walk out the door, “I’m gonna be late for class.” And she left without so much as a goodbye.
