There was probably no area in the ship she had spent less time in than engineering. She barely passed the engineering section of the command exam. But she did pass and here she was, looking for the Chief Engineer. She made his way to his office and activated the chime.

-Lt. Cmdr. Amari Brooks, XO

Mark looked up from a PaDD of next week’s duty roster. “Enter.”

-Lt(j.g.) Mark Pierce, CE

Amari entered through the doors. She was an attracted woman with dark chocolate skin, a brown puff of hair on top of her head, and very fit looking in her command red. “Lieutenant Pierce?” she presumed, though she couldn’t imagine who else might be in the Chief Engineer’s office. “I’m Lt. Commander Amari Brooks. The new executive officer.”

-Lt . Cmdr. Brooks, XO

The CE stood up and rounded his desk, offering his hand. “Good to meet you sir.”

“I hope the Ogawa is to your liking, we do our best to keep her in the best shape possible.”

-Lt(j.g.) Mark Pierce, CE

Amari took the offered hand and gave a firm grip. She smiled warmly a brilliant smile. “She’s a remarkabe ship, Lt. Pierce and I’m sure, thanks to you and your team she’s in tip top shape.” She released the man’s hand and folded her arms. “But go ahead and drop the sir stuff. I don’t think I can get used to it. Commander Brooks, Commander, Doctor, or even Amari is much better than Sir… or Ma’am for that matter.”

She glanced around the room. “So how long have you been on the Ogawa?”

-Lt. Cmdr. Brooks, XO

“Have a seat.” Mark said, indicating a chair on the other side of his desk. “I haven’t been here terribly long. I came aboard as an ensign crewman, and when the last Chief resigned, Captain Taylor asked me to step up.”

-Lt(j.g.) Mark Pierce, CE

Amari made her way to the chair and sat down. She smiled warmly. She knew the details of course from Pierce’s personnel profile, but she wanted to get to know the man. “She must of thought very highly of you then. Captain Taylor doesn’t strike me as the type to promote someone who hasn’t proven themselves worthy of the challenge. Have you had many challenges adjusting to your new role aboard the ship?”

-Lt. Cmdr. Brooks, XO

Mark sat down. “Well, I came into Starfleet later, out of the Marines. As an older Ensign, it’s harder to get taken seriously unless you do good work. Superiors tend to favour the young prodigy over the old guy. In the Marines I was a sergeant with my own platoon, so having a unit to command while I’m still in active field service is nothing new. The only difference, I suppose, is that I don’t have to keep up my marksman qualification anymore.” He smiled. “As much work as it is, it’s good work. Essential to the continuing function of this ship.”

-Lt(j.g.) Mark Pierce, CE
