She couldn’t help but be greatly amused at Taylor’s reaction. “Well, first off, we Betazoids have a natural ability to make small talk that turns deeper. Never met one yet that couldn’t if they wished to. And as for the other, well…” It wasn’t a particularly funny story but at the same time, when you considered the story that she had just told Willo about losing her first ship, this next one was even more astonishing.

Willow nodded as if she understood. Having been born and raised on Betazed she had first hand experience of this fact. She listened however.

“So, after the Apollo was destroyed, there was the standard inquiry. I was cleared of any wrong doing and then commended for my actions. And then they gave me the Apollo’a replacement ship, the Endeavour. So, first assignment after we get on board is to do a quick test run. We go to leave spacedock and soon after we do, we realize something is wrong. By then it was too late though, the ship had been highjacked! So myself and my skeleton crew are now fighting for our lives and trying to take back the ship. Eventually Jonathan and I found our way to the holodeck where a simulation was running. Long story short, we needed to shut down the holographic warp core before it exploded, because there was a sabotaged set of programs that had tied it to our actual warp core. If the holographic core exploded, so would the ship. But… this program had the misfortune of being a Dominion War training program, complete with officers on the lookout for Changelings. We ran into an armed officer in Engineering who was convinced I was a Changling. I managed into prepare the core shut down, but the guy shot me and when he realized that I clearly was not a Changeling, he finished the core shut down. The program then ended and Jon had to get me to Sickbay before my cardiovascular system shut down. At least the cadets on board at the time got some emergency medical training,” she deadpanned.

Willow blinked at her, lost for words it appeared.

Leaning in, Mel’s dark eyes held amusement. “Face it Taylor, you got it easy,” she teased.Even though she knew quite the opposite, she hoped to remind Willow she wasn’t alone in this, ever.

A slight nod, the red haired woman’s mouth still agape. She glanced down at the mug she held and then checked the time, “Oh for the sake of seven hells.” She muttered under her breath. She held her hands up palms at Mel and stood. “Wait right there. Do not move.” She walked briskly to a replicator outlet and tapped a few command then returned with two full ice cream sundaes and spoons which she out down one in each place then sat again.

Deep was her amusement and Mel just sat back in her seat, not intending to go anywhere. She was surprised how nice it was to share these crazy stories from her years of service. It wasn’t like hers were particularly more dramatic than others, but as a civilian here, she wasn’t sure how many people cared to hear them. She didn’t want to dwell on the life she had lived before, but there were a lot of moment of learning that she never wanted to lose sight of.

Watching Willow set the dishes down, Reez grinned. “Ice cream: that’s the solution?”

“Stories like these demand stronger than coffee. Unfortunately time of day dictates that we don’t hit the booze…and so.” She plunged her spoon into the mass of chopped nuts, chocolate sauce and whipped cream on top of her own dish and then held it up in a toast. “To Command training that prepares you for theory and for friends, crew mates, instincts and sheer dumb luck that takes care of the rest.”

Gathering a good helping of he confection, Mel lifted her spoon and chuckled. “Cheers to that, my friend.” The cold gooeyness was immensely satisfying and she was quite happy to savour the treat.

“Next time, remind me to save the best stories for evening,” Reez said with a wink. “There is one involving Klingons and bloodwine that I liked to tell the cadets. Though I’m never quite sure what the moral was. Mostly it was to reassure them that their cadet training cruise was either less crazy than mine, or about equal.”

Willow laughed. “I have a great one as an XO with a radiation issue mutating a vine plant that took over a deck of the starbase and kidnapped the CMO and the Security chief.” She ate another spoonful and smiled happily. Though the day started with dairy gone mad it looked like it would be easily repaired with other dairy.

Mel’s eyes widened. “That’s a new one! What happened in the end?” she asked, clearly intrigued. sometimes these stories ended badly, but that only served as a reminder that life in space was just as unpredictable as anywhere, and sometimes more so.
