Amari stiffened slightly, unwittingly she had maneuvered into very personal territory that usually wasn’t proper when speaking with your commanding officer. Especially when you first meet. But Amari liked this woman, she felt very at ease very quickly. “Oh, I’m so sorry. That must have been very difficult. But I can relate. I lost my husband a little over 13 years ago. Being a single mother, raising two daughters and juggling a career. It hasn’t always been easy. Actually, I don’t think it’s ever been easy.” She smiled warmly. “I’m just thankful for this opportunity. I think the Ogawa will be a great place for Sadee to come into her own. I hope so anyway.”

-Lt. Cmdr. Brooks, XO

Willow held a hand up again. “Sorry that was inappropriate of me and rude on a first meeting, I guess they are right you don’t get another chance to make a first impression.” She laughed lightly. “Well since I apparently decided to forgo the professional, Willow Taylor. My friends call me Will and I’m a teenage survivor,” she held a hand out her eyes twinkling, “My friends call me Will, we are delighted to have you on the ship.”

“Amari Brooks and I don’t have a nickname other than Mom or Doctor.” She shook the offered hand and her eyes twinkled jovially. “Although, I have always wanted to be called Number One. So, if you wouldn’t mind throwing one of those in occassionally.” She laughed at her own little joke. “And there is absolutely nothing to apologize for Captain. I shouldn’t have pried. I must say though, I feel a certain kindred spirit in you. I feel like I’ve known you or ages. Isn’t that strange?”

-Lt. Cmdr. Brooks, XO

Laughing Willow sipped her drink again, “That I can do. Strange you should say that, I felt the same. Hopefully a sign of good things to come Commander.” Replacing her drink of the desk she hunted some files for the woman, department reports that she would need. “So you were a Doctor? What specialty if I may enquire?”

“Family practice and Emergency medicine. The two most common specialties needed aboard a starship, which is where I always knew I wanted to end up.” She sipped the tea savoring the warm liquid as it traversed her throat. “It was always what I wanted to do.” She noticed the captain rummage through some reports. “i’ve read up on most of the officers on board. The Ogawa has a very talented and very diverse crew. I’m especially looking forward to meeting your Chief Science Officer, a Lt. Tressex, I believe? I’ve never met an Antican, but I’ve studied their physiology. Quite fascinating.”

-Lt. Cmdr. Brooks, XO

Willow nodded. “I had the department heads all do a department report this last week. Thought you’d like to see. He is a very capable officer and I was delighted to promote him to Chief of the department recently. We are fortunate to have such a diversity.”

“Yes I would. If you would transfer those to me I will read over them.” She sat the tea cup down and picked up a PaDD. “If you don’t mind me asking, Captain, what was your specialty?”

She sipped more of her drink. “I was a cardio surgeon specialising in Pediatrics myself.” She smiled as if rembering a time she had forgotten and still like to reminisce about. “Anyway, I’m not sure if you have a preference to how you’d like to preform your duties…I’m open to discuss this.”

Amari noticed the captain’s expression change as she fondly remembered her past and then quickly change back, down to business. It made her wonder why Taylor had decided to leave medicine for the big chair. She obviously loved being a surgeon. But that was a conversation for another time. She had a feeling there would be ample opportunity in the future for sharing.

“I’m open as well,” Amari replied, shifting gears. “I am not the most experienced XO in the fleet but I love to learn and strive to be the best. I know I will learn so much under your command, Captain. So, as they say, this is your rodeo. You tell me what you need from me and I will deliver.”

She tapped a few places on the PaDD skimming through the various reports. She would study them more in depth later. “I notice crew evaluations are due in a couple of months. I really am looking forward to that.” As CMO she only had a small staff to evaluate. Here, and as XO, she had a multitude of Department Heads. It was a little intimidating. “I’ll get a head start by touring the ship, introducing myself to the department heads. Work on getting my space legs back.”

-Lt. Cmdr. Brooks, XO

Willow watched her and smiled as she listened. “That sounds like a great idea. I’m happy for you to do the evaluations and then we can go over them together. In terms of mission and away team duties I’m happy to allow you to take charge there or we can rotate that as we see fit.”

“If there is any danger involved, it’s my mission. If it’s tedious and boring, it’s yours.” Amari was mostly joking, as would be evident in the twinkling of her eyes and her slight smile, but one of the biggest aspects of her new position was protecting the captain. If Captain Taylor assumed that Amari would be okay with risking the captain’s safety unnecessarily, then she had another thing coming. “But we can save that argument, for another times… Captain.” She had a feeling that another time would be the very next away mission.

Willow’s eyes twinkled. “Yes and argue about it we shall I have no doubt.” She said with a grin.

She sipped again. “Back to crew members I feel that I should warn you in advance that I have in good authority there is the normal amount of fraternising between crew members. It isn’t an issue but in a ship this small we will know about it if there is, what else. Oh yes…our dentist is…well creepy I’m afraid there’s no other word for it. He appeared on the roster and whenever I enquire about him with command I get a lot of reassurance from blank faced looking people in big chairs so he’s there and harmless enough just be prepared. Our newest crew members have reported in also including a school teacher for the children, she is Klingon and comes highly praised but I’d like one of us to keep an eye on things with her for…obvious reasons,” she smiled ruefully.

“Aren’t all dentists creepy?” Amari chuckled slightly. “I can monitor the teacher. If I know my daughter, I will be on a first name basis with her teacher in no time.

Willow then pulled a face and looked grim. “I also regret to say we are currently have the honour as command out it of rehabilitating a felon, Doctor Jasper Jarvis joined us as part of some sort of program to try to utilise his skill rather than have him rot in the prison colony he belongs in. I’m not sure if you know his rather colourful past.”

Amari looked puzzled. She had read up on all the senior officers of course, but was only partially through the rest of the crew. “No, I’m afraid I am not, Captain. I haven’t made it to crewmen yet. But I will make his profile a priority.” She couldn’t say that the thought of having a convicted felon aboard the same ship as her daughter made her feel very at ease, but she knew the captain would never allow the ship to be put in danger. Amari already trusted the captain implicitly.

She cleared her throat, “However he is on restricted duty for now and banned from any surgery and Commander Walker our Chief of staff if monitoring the situation. Oh and we have also become host of a small family of Gastropoda which we found eating their way through our plasma. They are in the bio labs in their own little domicile and seem rather content. We will need to return them to their planet of origin when we have time.”

She grinned. “And that’s it. Welcome to the madness.”

Amari sat wide-eyed with a large smile across her face. “Did I say the ship was diverse, Captain? That may have been a bit of an understatement.” She stood recognizing the dismissal. “Captain Taylor, here’s to a long and successful partnership. Thank you again for this opportunity for which I am immensely grateful.” She held out her hand, not knowing whether or not a handshake was entirely appropriate. However, in this case, she thought Will might be okay with it.

-Lt. Cmdr. Amari Brooks, XO

Watching her Willow laughed good naturedly and standing as well too the hand and shook it. “Thank you for being here. I hope that you settle quickly and have a happy service with us,” she smiled. “Number one.”
