Cai glanced up at the new voice and took in the girl, She had been in class and set off the PaDD. Interesting he had wracked his brain for weeks before he had gotten that one, he looked at the pieces. “I tried that, It’s perfect and very clever but…” he made the move as she suggested and then made the counter move that blocked it ended up in a checkmate as she said but in 4 moves. “See?” He asked

Doctor Jarvis scowled at the newcomer. It was not due to her intrusion, although it had seemed a little unplanned, but they way she had just blurted out a solution. It appeared that she did not share his oppinions on lifes challenges. He took another mouthful of steak, this time with some of the mash and green veg; it had been over done. He would ignore her for now for it had not been her who had perked hos interest.

The man’s scowl didn’t phase Sadee in the slightest. If she let it bother her every time an adult scowled at her, she would always be in a bad mood. Not that she was ever in a good mood, but still. She might have found it irritating that the pompous man didn’t bother to acknowledge her at all had she actually given a damn.

He reset the pieces and raised his eyebrow, the bar through it pulling slightly as he considered Jasper. “Cai.” He said and frowned at the man’s choice of lunch, “you? Haven’t seen you before. You I have seen” he added turning to the girl. “I looked up your records your the new XOs daughter right?” He asked her.

Cai

A rare smile lit up Sadee’s face as she nodded. She was about to respond to the dreamy boy’s question when…

Cai blinked as though the smile took him aback and suddenly he was smiling too. A charming sort of smile that both see,Ed to light up his silvery coloured eyes and make his black lip ring stand out more in comparison with his teeth. “You’ve some wicked computer skill Red.”

Saddee, thought her heart might leap from her chest. “Thanks,” she managed before her throat closed up on her completely. He had called her, Red. That’s it. I’m keeping the hair, it’s never changing. She thought to herself.

“I am Dr Jarvis,” he replied to the boy’s question. “I only recently came aboard.” He looked a the chess board. If the boy wished he would explain the logic to the first move, the possible counter moves and then the one the opposing player eventually responded with. “May I?” He raised a hand and indicated the board.

Turning Cai frowned back at the man. “Yeah hence the never seen you before. Why not, be my guest.” He watched to see what the man would do.

Sadee’s blood began to boil. Not only had Cai been way ahead of her when it came to the chess play, but this arrogant jerk across from him first ignores her, then butts in before she had a chance to answer. She could feel her heart began to race as the anger brewed in her gut.

But wait, did he say his name was…

The doors opened again as Adrian Sorel entered, hungry and wanting a late lunch. He spotted Cai and Sadee immediately and wandered over to see what was up.

Adrian Sorel

Sadee looked up just in time to see Adrian. She waved to him. “Over here, Pointy. You don’t want to interrupt those two, trust me.” She gestured to an empty seat at her table that was just across from the one Cai and that man occupied. But he wasn’t just that man, she knew of him, somehow. “Hey Sorel, do you know that guy sitting with Cai,” she asked softly as he sat down.

-Sadee

“My name is Adrian Sorel,” Adrian Sorel said as he took the seat beside her as he shook his head.”No, I do not know him. Are they playing a game of chess?” He asked as he studied the other two. It did not quite appear they were, more like the older man was trying to instruct Cai in it perhaps. If that was so, Adrian Sorel doubted it would go over well.

Adrian Sorel

“I’m sorry, Adrian Sorel, it’s called a nick name. Friends give them to each other all the time. Get over it,” she replied. “No, they’re not playing a game. It’s a logic problem. The pieces are set up in a particular pattern and the object is to checkmate the opponent in three moves. I thought I had it , I could have sworn it.” She wanted to study the board, to figure it out and impress Cai. Why hadn’t that worked? What was she missing?

Adrian Sorel blinked at Sadee’s tone and was a bit taken aback at her stating they were friends. It took him a moment to turn his thoughts back to the game the other two were playing.

Cai lifted his middle and index fingers in greeting and nodded at Adrian as he watched Jasper. “You think you can stay awake long enough to make the move?” He asked with a small smirk. “Your old person food and wine won’t distract you right?”

Cai

Dr Jarvis groaned internally as the number of anklebiters increased. He had not anticipated the chess playing loaner to attract either friend or fan. Perhaps children on Federation starships had a different social culture from the one he recalled from his own youth. Raising a hand he made an identical first move to the one the boy had done. He then stopped to explain, “your first move is correct. However, you are making the wrong assumption when it comes to the response from Klepton’s opponent.”

Cai frowned watching him, he chewed his lip ring as he waited.

He moved one of the opposing Bishops. “At this stage, Klepton’s opponent was still pushing for checkmate. Therefore his response was aimed towards that goal, not to try and counter Klepton’s.”

Jasper left the board for the boy to ponder and returned to his dinner.

Ponderously Cai frowned more at the chess puzzle and pushed his hair out of his eyes.

Sadee, giggled. “Hey Adrian Sorel, how well do you know Cai? Is he dating anyone?” She spoke with Adrian but kept her eyes on Cai, silently rooting him on as he worked to figure out the problem without the man’s help.

-Sadee

“Uh…I don’t think so.”Adrian Sorel said uncertainly. Cai had certainly never spoken about any girls with him. He wasn’t even sure Cai would be interested in girl’s like that. Though with humans it was hard to tell, he had noted that they seemed to have an obsession with such things.

Adrian Sorel

After some minutes something clicked in his head, Red had been right in some part. If he followed the old geezers first move and advice then included what Sadee had suggested…then made one slight adjustment.

“Checkmate…” He said making move three and sat back folding his arms. A slight smug smirk on his face. Satisfaction at the thing being dealt with and solved.

Cai

Sadee began clapping enthusiastically, her face lighting up at Cai’s victory, and then, rather quickly, she became self-conscious. She felt silly and stopped clapping immediately. Her expression returned to it’s usual seriousness. “Poin- um, I mean, Adrian Sorel, we’re friends, right?”

-Sadee
