Pilar came over “I’m Pilar O’Keefe, head nurse on the Ogawa.” She said looking at Drake “I can take care of the supply inventory and start making requests to the Ogawa to beam down what we need.” She said “If that’s okay with you.” She said as she grabbed one of her nurses to help her with this task.

“Sure, our current supplies are in the back, and I can walk you through them in a minute. Our old supply area was destroyed in the storm. Lost everything in it,” Rinne replied.

Drake shook her hand. “And after that get to work. You seem plenty busy. We have clearance to transport any consenting patients up to the Ogawa. I can work here though. Compared to some other places I’ve been, this is paradise.

-Dr Drake Marshall

“You know we can fix that now with something other than just a bandage,” Ally said looking at the woman who was just treated. Like any other doctor, the woman was doing the best she could for her patients with what she had. The difference was Ally had a medical tricorder and the ability to fix the woman pretty much good as new. “I have a dermal regenerator in my bag,” Ally swung the medical pack around and pulled the regenerator from it. “May I,” she asked Rinne looking at the woman.

Lt Ally Scott, medical

O’Keefe (head Nurse)

“It’s a third degree burn we’ve been healing in stages. It’s much improved from when Ketra arrived. Go ahead and take a look. We didn’t have the ability to do a graft, so now that that is an option, we can weigh the pros and cons of dong one now,” Anni said.

“Ketra this is Doctor… Sorry I didn’t catch your name?” Rinne said.

“Allison Scott and why would you not want to treat this with the dermal regenerator. It will significantly reduce the chance of infections,” Ally said looking at Rinne.

Drake had no consideration for the ongoing conversation. “If we take measurements of the burn and take a skin sample, I can have the Ogawa create a graft made out of her own tissue. Then just put it in place. Easy. I can make the graft here if you have a replicator that will take custom input.”

-Dr Drake Marshall

“Um does my shirt not say, Doctor,” Ally looked down and then hit the palm of her hand on her forehead. “That’s right we don’t have names on our shirts but I can assure you that yes I did go to the academy and I am a doctor who knows how to fix something as minor as a burn.”

“Wait… why are we doing a skin graft again instead of the dermal regenerator? These things can easily take care of third degree burns, radtion burns, scaring, heal wounds and create skin over them… I am at a lost why we are not going to use the tool we have at hand? Is there something preventing their use?” Jonathan chimed up, he hadn’t said anything but it did perplex him. Was there something going on he was unaware of? He often didn’t have tools such as a dermal regenerator when he was in the field during the Dominion war, but they had the tool now.

OOC: I know this may sound like a broken record, http://memory-alpha.wikia.com/wiki/Dermal_regenerator but this is shown to do grafts, fix third degree burns and even repair subnucleonic radiation. Is there a reason it can’t be used right now if we have one? Something maybe I missed? Just wanted to make sure we use the right tools at the right time as skin grafts had become almost a thing of the past, if Bones where here he might have called it archaic.

Reez, CoP

Ally tried to stifle a smirk. Jonathan might not look like a typical doctor but she had seen him in sickbay a few times when they were short staffed for one reason or another. The man knew his stuff. He also had a psych degree. This combo could be used for ultimate good or ultimate evil if he wanted. Luckily Jonathan was the type to fly under the radar with his skills until he was forced to show them.

Drake sighed. “Yes. We can use a dermal regenerator. But it won’t heal perfectly.” Reez was ultimately right, but waving a dermal regenerator over it and walking away wasn’t Drake’s ideal. “There will still be scarring. But a dermal regenerator is fine. Those head traumas. Any of them need help? From just one emergency specialist?” So far all he had found was other officers, no interesting cases, no emergency cases. This had been so built up as a tragic area, Drake was a little disappointed.

-Dr Drake Marshall

OOC: That was just a Drake thing. He’s a perfectionist, so given the opportunity to do it a strange way that he prefers and thinks would leave the patient in better shape, he’s going to just take over.

“But there won’t be scaring, there won’t be anything. A dermal regenerator removes scaring, does grafts… and heals burns, both third degree, and even radiation burns. They did teach you this in medical school didn’t they Doctor Marshall?” Jonathan asked looking at him with a squint. Any modern doctor recommending grafts was to him the same as saying we should do leeches, or chemo therapy. They had perfected tools to do things so archaic practices didn’t have to be done.

Reez, CoP

Drake straightened up and cracked his neck. He turned to Reez. “Commander Reez. I say Commander because it has been some time since you practised real medicine. In the instance of a third degree burn, left treated by bandaging for some extended period is going to require more extensive treatment than a fresh wound. Any first year med student should know that you have to treat patients on a case-by-case, not in blanket terms. Didn’t they teach you that? Or was it so long ago you’ve forgotten? If I have to retreat to the “ancient” technique of grafting so that I can work closely and make sure everything is perfect, I will.” He stepped up to Reez. “I am an emergency specialist surgeon. I know what I am doing.”

-Dr Drake Marshall

OOC: I just wanted to make sure this is just Jonathan, but the I guess unless Lindsay wants to insist, the Dermal Re-generator is technically the best method. Star Trek has shown it to repair things long after the wound had festered, it doesn’t really have a time delay when it comes to situations like this. I mean re-generators are used for cosmetic surgery, grafts, scar repair, third degree burn repair etc.

“Lieutenant, I would suggest you cool your jets before you go half cocked. Our patient has a wound, one on the outside. I may not be a surgeon but I am pretty sure you don’t need to cut her open to find the root of her problem. This isn’t a time for heroics or exploratory medicine. You use what is at hand and what works, not drastic measures that a patient can have longer lasting effects if things go wrong. Next time you want to lip off remember who is your superior, or I can have you marched to the Captain on disciplinary measures if you want to keep exasperating the issue.” Jonathan said, his voice cool and calm as he looked at the lieutenant.

Jon knew people loved to forget he was a fully licenced doctor who had training in neuroscience as well as psychiatric medicine. He had seen his fair share of wounds in war zones when he fought for Betazed’s freedom as a combat medic and new enough to know when you should try and use the tools that gave the patient the best chance. There was no reason to not use the tools they brought to help the best they could.

“How about we start fully examining the patient, we have the equipment they don’tr hear, we can better diagnose and recognize her issues and formulate a method that matches the tools we brought with us.” Jonathan said, as they had already suggested they look at her first, which seemed the best option before trying any methods on the patient.

Looking at the woman and then to Alison he walked over. “Let’s begin the examination, I do apologize for that scene Miss. I didn’t mean to storm in and cause a medical debate when we have far more pressing things to do.”

Reez, CoP

“I got this,” Ally said walking over to the women. “May I,” she said reaching out for the woman’s arm. “I have some medicine that will take away the pain. If you will let me,” she said waiting for the woman to react.

Lt. Ally Scott Medical

OOC: Coughs Dermaline gel. More to the story than you’ve given me a chance to reveal. ;)

Rinne just stood there and stared at the visiting staff with her mouth agape. Not even allowed to get a word in edgewise, they didn’t even have a patient history before they started fighting over the treatment that she had been working on for the last few days. They had no idea how much work it had taken to get Ketra to actually allow anyone to inspect the wound and that by the time the woman had arrived at Carraya the deep damage had already been done.

Ketra looked at Rinne and Anni composed herself and nodded to the Romulan. “Dr. Scott will look after you, Ketra,” she said softly. “I’ll give her the additional background info she needs, okay?” The Romulan nodded, so far having not said a word in the presence of others.

Turning to Scott, Anni composed herself, keeping her tone utterly neutral. “Ketra came to us with a severely infected third-degree burn that had tiny pieces of shrapnel in it. The wound had not received any real treatment since she was injured and parts had closed over the shrapnel. I had to excise the shrapnel and then I used a dermal regenerator in precise passes to heal specific areas of scarring. Dermaline gel is being used after each pass, then bandaged, because Ketra’s infection has not fully cleared up. It would be pointless to seal in an infection that would just spread. Once the infection was gone, I was going to finish regeneration. But… there would be an obvious deformity left if we don’t graft, and while it might be fine for others to leave a patient with healed hole in their arm, I had hoped for a graft that would leave no scar. But I didn’t have that option until you folks arrived.”

Dr. Rinne moved away from Ketra and glanced at the others. “If you all don’t have any further critiques of my medical skills, I’m going to go help your Head Nurse with the inventory,” she said tersely and moved to the back of the clinic.
