Mel’s eyes widened. “That’s a new one! What happened in the end?” she asked, clearly intrigued. sometimes these stories ended badly, but that only served as a reminder that life in space was just as unpredictable as anywhere, and sometimes more so.

Willow laughed. “It’s funny now but my word, we had such a terrible time with it. The plant thing…” and off she went in a tale worthy of a sci-fi story of old. A daring, newly minted security chief who’s botanist partner had brought a plant from a trader and thought nothing of it until a coincidental space anomomly had managed to bombard the station with radiation. The crew and people were not effected but the plant itself drank it in like babybio it became ginormous and slowly over the course of 48 hours began to spread out across the deck wrapping everyone and everything in its vines until they managed to deal with it.

“And then when we got it back under control he wanted to keep it! Well it had become more sentient and I’m pretty sure they kept it…we called it Ziggy.”

Reez laughed openly, her face wide with a smile that lit up her dark eyes. “Ziggy! Very creative.” She leaned forward. “So… what been your favourite moment as a CO, or even as a first officer?”

Finishing her ice cream willow considered. “Hmmm…tough one.” She pointed her spoon at Mel a moment. “I think it was the first time one of my officers asked me to preform her wedding ceremony.” She smiled and considered looking slightly sad, “ she looked beautiful and her husband was so nervous. It was a great day.”

Reez beamed and nodded. Happy occasions seemed to be the theme. But she was mindful of Willow’s own broken engagement.

Looking up again Willow smiled. “You?”

“Similar, but it was Academy graduations. There is something truly wonderful about handing cadets their first officer pip and getting to celebrate their achievements. I even told them at one ceremony that being the captain of an Academy ship had cured my lethargy due to years of battle weariness. There was something about seeing people just starting out their careers and all their excitement that helped me remember why I joined in the first place.” Mel smiled deeply
