Winding down her tour in what was quickly becoming a very exhausting first day, she stopped in front of the Chief Science Officer’s office door. She couldn’t wait to meet this one. She activated the chime.

-Lt. Cmdr. Amari Brooks, XO

bump

The door opened to a somewhat disheveled office in various stages of organization. Seated at the desk was the Antican CSO who looked up as the door opened. Seeing the XO, he immediately came to his feet and said “Oh… oh my… I am so sorry Commander… I have been trying to get organized. Please.. please… sit if you would like. Again… I am sorry for the state of the office, but with the transition and the mission…” and he voice trailed off, obviously embarrassed.

The XO had been waiting in anticipation of meeting the Antican CSO and was not completely caught off guard by the state of the officer or the state of the office. “At ease, Lieutenant,” she said with an amused smile. “And don’t apologize. The most brilliant of minds often keep disorganized work spaces,” she began, “which explains why my office space is neat and tidy.” She hoped a little self-deprecating humor would put the Lieutenant at ease.

-Lt. Cmdr. Brooks, XO

Tressex smiled, his lips parting to show sharp canine teeth. “I will try not to take your tidiness as a comment on your mental faculties, Ma’am.” and he relaxed a bit. Not much, but at least some. “May I get you something to drink, Commander? And if I may ask, what brings you to the lab today?”

It pleased the XO to see the CSO seeming to relax some. She immediately like him, she didn’t know why, but there was something… familiar about him. “Thank you, a lavender tea would be lovely,” she said as though she had been waiting for someone to ask her for ages. “I am merely getting to know the ship and the department heads. No worries. It’s not an official inspection… not yet.” She smiled.

She glanced around the office. “Do you mind if I sit down? Only I feel I have walked every inch of this ship today.”

-Lt. Cmdr. Brooks, XO

Tressex nodded and said “Oh! Of course. Please.” and he indicated the one clear chair in front of the desk. He went to the replicator and retrieved the tea, and a glass of water for himself. Setting the drinks down on the respective sides, he sat down and said “A large ship to cover all in one day, Commander.” while nodding in understanding. Taking a breath, he said “What would you like to know, Ma’am?” and gestured around at the Lab in general.

She sipped the warm fragrant liquid and could feel its calming effects almost immediately. She placed the cup on the saucer and the saucer on the desk. “You, Lieutenant,” she said matter of factly. “I would like to know you. After all, we will most likely be working together for quite some time to come. We should know each other. For instance, you are the first Antican I’ve met. What made you decide to join Starfleet? It doesn’t seem to be a very common career path among your people.”

-Lt. Cmdr. Brooks, XO

Tressex nodded in agreement. “No, Ma’am. It is not. My people are very pack-centric. It is the basis for our society, our government… everything. But there are a few of us whose desire to see and learn is stronger than their pack ties. Well.... not ‘stronger’. But it makes our priorities shift. I am very fortunate. My family, my pack, is very supportive. I was never… aggressive… like some of my cousins and siblings. But they all supported my education and desire to become a scientist. And so I find myself here. Although, I must say I was never planning on becoming Chief Science Officer. That was… unexpected.”
