This was a medical ship, Kusinut knew there was no way to avoid the inevitable event of a boarding physical. She couldn’t really find a reason to resent it, especially if it was going to be something quick and easy. She had no medical issues that she knew of, which had her hoping the evaluation would be a breeze. Although, there was still the lingering possibility that it wouldn’t be that easy.

Stop stressing about things that don’t even exist! Gah, you really are turning into your mother! She thought to herself, internally rolling her eyes. Muttering a soft curse under her breath, Ember meandered into the sickbay, mentally prepared to be poked and prodded by a professional. Or, at least, someone who claimed they were one.

Lt. Sutalo

“Doctor Marshall? Doctor?” Drake rounded a corner. “What?” The NE indicated Sutalo. “New arrival.” Dr ake looked at her and walked over.

“Hello Lt, I’m Dr Drake Marshall, if you’d like to have a seat on this biobed over here, I’ll be right with you.” He got a medical tricorder and PaDD. “What name should I file this under?” He was being uncharacteristically nice. To those who knew him, uncomfortably so.

-Dr Drake Marshall

“Thank you,” Sutalo nodded to him, making her way over to the biobed. Hopping onto it, she crossed her legs at the ankle, clapsing her hands in her lap. “Emb- Kusinut Sutalo,” she wasn’t fond of her first name, but she knew he wouldn’t find her under her nickname.

Not much slipped past a surgeon’s eye. He saw her slip and her discomfort. Looking at his PaDD, Drake pulled up her medical file. “Lt Sutalo.” He said, avoiding her first name. “Nothing terribly remarkable in your history. Seems like you keep healthy.” He looked up “And fit.” He tossed the PaDD onto the adjacent biobed and opened the medical tricorder, withdrawing the wand like scanner as he did so. He started his scans.

“I try,” Kusinut shrugged, dismissively. Staying as still as possible, her feet dangling off the biobed as she moved her hands to rest by her hips, she glanced about the Sickbay. Her scans would prove his observations to be true: she was quite healthy. And aside from a slightly elevated heartrate, due to the anxiety of being on a new ship, she was in good health.

Drake closed his tricorder. “Your heart rate is a little high, but the first little while on a ship can be exciting. I have a couple questions, in case the basic scan missed anything. Where are you reporting from?”

-Dr Drake Marshall

“Not a problem; ask away.” Kusinut brushed off the thought of additional questions. “Earth, actually. I only just reentered Starfleet after a brief career change.” She informed.

Lt. Sutalo

“Oh?” He asked. “What kind of career change?” He offered her the closest thing he had to a natural smile. The surgeon’s comforting smile. It’s not something they taught in medical school. Just a learned practice.

-Dr Drake Marshall

Kusinut had always found the surgeon’s smile to be a bit unsettling, as if they were forcing the grin even though they knew things were going to go downhill. In spite of this, she returned his smile with one of her own. “Well, I went from being a Security officer and forensics specialist, to being a legal advisor and diplomatic specialist. A bit of a change.”

“Interesting. Just wake up one morning and not feel like carrying a phaser?”

“I guess you could say that,” Kusinut chuckled, shaking her head.

“My other question, did you come in contact with anyone either sick or recovering from illness recently? Boyfriend hasn’t been sick? I know that seems irrelevant, but there are asymptomatic carriers for almost every disease. Not having symptoms wouldn’t show up on my tricorder’s scan.”

-Dr Drake Marshall

“Boyfriend? You assume too much, Doctor Marshall,” Ember shook her head. She was not with anyone in particular, nor had she been since her transfer back to Earth. It seemed insignificant compared to her studies. “But no. No contact with anyone I knew was carrying a virus.”

Drake’s surgeon’s smile slipped into a natural one. Not something he could do consciously, but his unconscious mind could. “Good, good.” He started typing on the PaDD “I like to let the patient hear what I write. No secrets between doctor and patient. ‘Lt Sutalo presents no signs of illness. Scans also do not indicate current injury or previously improperly healed injuries. According to patient report, no contact has been made with any carrier of disease. Patient is not reporting from origin of any foreign diseases. In my professional opinion, she is in every way fit for active duty. Signed - Drake Marshall, M.D.’ I suppose that means you’re free to go. I do have one non-medical question, if you don’t mind. When you gave me your name, you hesitated on your first name. You started to give me a different name, probably a nickname. Why? What’s the deal with your first name?”

-Dr Drake Marshall

“I appreciate your transparency, Doctor.” Sutalo rose to her feet, brushing off her uniform, as if some non-existent dust had accumulated there. Upon the question of her first name and the confusion behind it, she paused, turning to glance at the man. Biting the inside of her lip, she straightened herself. “Ember; it is my middle name, but I prefer to go by it rather than Kusinut. As for the reason: Kusinut has some pretty serious trauma behind it, and I’d rather not have to deal with it, by using it frequently.” She paused, “Not to mention, it is just one crappy name. Hell, it sounds like someone is calling me ‘Casino’ Sutalo, most of the time.” She sighed.

OOC: To clarify what she said, Kusinut is pronounced: Coo-see-new. :)

Drake chuckled at the Casino line. “Its one upside is its uniquity. I lived down the hall from another Drake in med school. But, Lt Ember Sutalo, you have a clean bill of health.” He thought about her comment about transparency. “Lieutenant. I have to say, we have a doctor for this. Normally, if someone bugged me to do an intake physical, I’d pass it off on Jarvis. But I saw you and… I decided I’d take over this one. But now, unless I cause some sort of diplomatic incident, we’re unlikely to cross paths again.” His smile faded. “I’m going to be blunt.” He chuckled. “Which, if you ask around, second to surgery, is my specialty. I don’t want that to be the case.”
