“Similar, but it was Academy graduations. There is something truly wonderful about handing cadets their first officer pip and getting to celebrate their achievements. I even told them at one ceremony that being the captain of an Academy ship had cured my lethargy due to years of battle weariness. There was something about seeing people just starting out their careers and all their excitement that helped me remember why I joined in the first place.” Mel smiled deeply

Willow nodded enthusiastically. “I can imagine that would be very exciting. I liked training cadets at star-fleet medical. It was always made me remember myself at that stage and seeing them become more confident as time went on was great.” She pulled a face, “a pity it didn’t work with Cai.”

Reez’s face shifted into a sympathetic look. “But Cai isn’t a cadet. And while he’s getting there, he’s also not a young adult yet. The cadets we’ve worked with worked hard to get admitted, let alone complete their studies enough to enter the practical phase of their training. There’s an inherent amount of discipline required to get to that level, and he’s a teenager Willow.” She reached out to rest a hand briefly on Taylor’s. “You want the best for him, but at some point you’re going to have to let him figure it out on his own.” She smirked slightly. “And hope you both survive the last of these adolescent years. And then maybe, after awhile, you’ll get to be his sister again, and not someone who needs to be his parent.”
