Zack materialised on the transporter pad of the USS Ogawa, giving the transporter crewman a smile. “Hello!” He said, brightly.

“Welcome aboard the Ogawa, sir.” The crewman responded, smiling in return.

“It’s a pleasure to be here.” The Betazoid hoisted his bag onto his shoulder; it contained his personal items, ones he didn’t want replicated. He always thought that it took away the sentimental value when things were dematerialised.

He left the transporter room and headed for his quarters, something which Zack was quite excited about. As a cadet, he had shared quarters with a Bolian who, although had become a friend, was prone to talking (and sometimes shouting) in his sleep. He unpacked his belongings, putting a holopicture up of his parents, and smiling as he did.

They were Human - he was adopted, but they had taken him when he was a baby, so he knew no one else. They had been so proud of him when he had graduated university and the Academy; he hoped to make them proud again when he earned himself a second pip.

But there were formalities to attend.

Putting on his uniform, Zack rubbed his hand over his shaved head, peered at his reflection in the mirror, nodding his own approval. The Academy had instilled him with strict behaviours, and though he had learned that life on an actual ship was a little more relaxed, he was hardly going to make any mistakes on his first day.

With that, he went to meet his new boss.

* Arriving at the office of the Chief Science Officer, the Betazoid made sure his uniform was unwrinkled, and pressed the doorchime.

His exit review from the Academy had been sent prior to his arrival. It read:

‘Cadet Zackary Alexander - now Ensign- is a proficient, capable and intelligent young person. He has shown considerable skill in his fields, especially that of xenobiology, biochemistry, and pharmacology: he has a certain knack for being able to identify medicines, their uses, contraindications, etc. He did confide in me that he would have been a doctor if he would have more time studying people than “patching them up”.
‘Zackary made an affable part of his team, generally being well liked amongst his fellow cadets and happily following orders. It should be noted however that he was given a verbal warning for using the science lab whilst not on duty for personal study. Though this is hardly a court martial offence, it does bring to light the Betazoid’s flaw of wanting to study a little too much, and sometimes his side projects can come into conflict with his official duties. This is something he needs to keep in order on his next assignment.

‘All in all, Zackary Alexander has the makings of becoming an excellent scientist and a fine officer. I shall watch his career with interest.’

A startled ‘Yip!’ came from the other side of the door, then the sound of throat clearing, and then a male voice said “Come in.” and the door slid open. Inside, the office of the Chief Science Office was… chaotic… to say the least. Several crates stacked haphazardly one side of the room and a few open crates on the other side seemed to frame a space in transition. In the midst of all the myriad of books, PaDDs, optical disks, and various other objects was the desk. At the desk was seated an canine-like humanoid male, an Antican, dressed in the standard blue uniform of the Science section. Lieutenant Junior Grade pips showed on his collar. Black hair cascaded from his chin and eyebrows in long strands and matched the long mustache typical of the race.

Looking up, the face of the CSO split into a grin showing bright white and very sharp teeth. “Yes? How can I help you…” and he squinted and peered closer at the new arrivals collar, “… Ensign, is it?”

The young Betazoid stepped through into the office, his dark eyes sweeping the cluttered space before resting on the person who would be his new boss.

He had heard of Anticans before, seen pictures, and had known the Chief Science Officer was Antican before his arrival, but seeing one in person was a different story. Also, what little he knew about them portrayed them in an almost .monster-like’ capacity; engaging in inter-species cannibalism; something he found to be quite disturbing.

But Zack was a professional first and foremost. He stood to attention when he reached the desk. “Ensign Zackary Alexander, reporting for duty, sir. I’m to join your team, if you’ll have me.” He made the joke with a small smile. He might be a little intimidated by the person before him, but he was still an affable young man who wanted to make a good first impression.

Tressex’s smile broadened and his head began bobbing up and down excitedly. “What? Oh my yes yes yes! Of course, Ensign! Do come in and sit! Yes, of course. I forgot you were arriving today. I thought… well, never mind. Sit. And would you like something to drink? I was about to get a little something for myself, so it’s no trouble at all. No not at all.” His speech was rapid and laced with excitement, and he seemed genuinely happy to see the new arrival. As he spoke, he rapidly cleared off a space on the desk and the stood and went to the replicator in the wall off to the side.

The young Betazaoid felt the wave of excitement emanating from his new boss, and couldn’t help but smile as he watched the Antican giving him such a warm welcome! Starfleet had been pretty rigid, and he had not really been prepared for such a friendly boss. He wasn’t going to complain. “Well, I actually wouldn’t mind some apple juice … if that’s okay, sir?”

Tressex nodded emphatically and ordered the drink, and a cup of tea for himself. He set the glass of juice in front of Alexander and the tea on his side and then took his seat.

He took the offered seat. “Thank you for being so welcoming. The instructors at the Academy fill you with all sorts of horror stories about what it’s going to be like once we’re finally posted, constantly being warned to stand to attention, or not speak when spoken to.” He glanced up.

Tressex shook his head, his flowing hair dancing back and forth. “Oh no no no… nothing like that… at least, not here. This is a Lab. We have much more to do than worry about every little formal protocol some find necessary. Now, that is not to say that I expect you to start calling everyone by their first names immediately, but if that comes around in a natural and mutually familiar manner, so be it. I am much more interested in your experimental and research results than I am in whether or not your uniform is in perfect order.” and he took a sip of his tea.

Zack found himself grinning along; the Antican’s energy was somewhat infectious, and the warmth from him not only spoke through his body language and speech, but the Betazoid could feel with it with his mind. It made him feel a lot more at ease.

“Now then… tell me a bit about yourself. Your background, specialties, areas of interest, an so on.”

Tressex, CSO

Taking a sip of his apple juice - it had always been his favourite; he drank it constantly - Zack set the glass on the table and sat back (but still straight backed - this was his boss, after all. “Well, sir, I studied Biology on Earth in England. It was all fascinating, but I found that I was drawn more and more to the study of an individual’s bio-makeup, and since there were a few other people from other planets studying alongside me, with completely different bodily systems and functions, I decided to do my Masters in Xenobiology. It was a little overwhelming at first,” he admitted. “As the science grows with every new species that we meet, and it’s pretty impossible to know everyone’s biological functionings, but I did well. The next step was to do my doctorate, but I had developed quite the fascination with the diversity f biology amongst difference races, and where better to do that then through Starfleet, which is composed more races that I can count.”

He took a longer drink. He wanted to down the glass, but also wanted to mind his manners. “It didn’t sit well with everyone,” he said, with a slight shrug. “My father is a pharmacology professor and he had been teaching me about medicines since I was a boy, so my parents really wanted me to become a medical doctor. And I definitely am interested in medicine and it’s effects on individuals, especially how they differ in their metabolism of different species …” He gave a small smile. “Not to be ghoulish, but I’d rather be picking things apart than fixing broken bones, sir.”

Zack realised he had not said a thing about himself. “In regards to myself … there isn’t much to say. I’m a Betazoid, but was adopted by my human parents when I was a baby, and have only ever visited Betazed once when I was 8. My telepathic abilities had not started showing at that point, so it just looked like another version of Earth, to me. I get a little obssessed over my projects, and still want to do my doctorate, but I try and make room for recreation.” He gave the man a guilty grin. “But I can’t resist a good holo-simulation of a Romulan endocrine system on my night off, sir.”

“Is it alright if I ask you how long you have been the Chief Science Officer here? And what it’s like being a scientist on a medical vessel?” Zack was certainly polite.
