Mel moved over to Haven and shifted the bag of supplies on her shoulder. “Zoi, I’m your Science person. I do need to do a bunch of data collection for the area, and going off on my own would be bad, so want to come with?” she asked. “Once I get the lay of the land, quite literally, we can request more equipment and liaise back with the ship.”

~Melaia Reez

Zoi, upon seeing that the idea of looking for a suitable ground for the hospital was nixed, wondered what else she could do to occupy her time. Should she go with the group and just keep her eye out or should she stay here? Thankfully, she was saved by the former Captain. She smiled warmly. “Yes, I believe that would be an excellent idea.”

She sent a message to Rico to let him know what she was doing and then turned to Mel. “Where would you like to start?” and she gestured in a way that indicated Mel could lead and she would follow.

Looking around, Mel gestured to beyond the camp a bit. “I want to do the perimeter and then check out slightly beyond to see what’s there.” It was highly unlikely anything predatory would be hanging out along the fringes of the encampment, and they’s both sense anything living that tried to sneak up on them.

Zoi nodded, marking her destination in her next message to Rico before she started out. “Alright Mel. Let’s get started. Just let me know if you need me to change direction or give you some extra time.” She kept her tricorder in her other hand to scan the area around them. Her hand remained on her weapon, but she didn’t anticipate using it. Mel thought rightly about them likely sensing any serious danger, though for Zoi it would be likely to be a more nebulous feeling.

Flipping open her tricorder, Mel looked around first and then veered off to the west towards the river so they could start scanning the perimeter. Inhaling deeply, Mel smiled. “It feels good to get off the ship. Been a very long time since I’ve been on an away mission as well. I don’t count being planet side for my leave as being the same.”

~Melaia Reez

She followed the woman without preamble, towards the river, eyes alternating between the area around them and the readings on her tricorder. Years of experience had given her the ability to glance at the tricorder and know what was on it quickly so that most of her time would be able to be spent keeping those she was with safe. “I have to agree. I think I really needed an away mission. Sometimes, it is nice to get away from the monotony that occurs while on board a vessel like this one. Being on an away mission gives fresh air, new sights, new smells, new people. Being on Leave is fine. I do enjoy taking time away, but that feels different. I like feeling useful and leave is about being… not useful.”

Reez’s commbadge chirped and the voice of the CSO came through. =/\= Mrs. Reez, Lieutenant Tressex here. I am sending you the latest findings we have compiled. Please be cautious when you are going outside of the complex. There is some dangerous indigenous species around. =/\= and her PaDD beeped that it had received a file.

=/\=Understood, Lieutenant. We’ll be cautious. But while we’re talking, we just had the debrief with the clinic staff. The medical side of things seems to have all the necessary focus, so I am free for now to do some more digging into the ecology and what not of the area. I could definitely use a large sample collection kit,=/\= Melaia replied.

~Melaia Reez

Zoi had learned much in her time in Star Fleet, but Science just was not her area of expertise. She smiled a little blandly in response to the warning given by Lt. Tressex. Both she and Melaia had considered this possibility, but the woman was only doing her job so Zoi couldn’t fault her for the warning. In fact, it was commendable. She kept an eye on her tricorder as they trudged along. =/\= I would also like a survival kit sent down. =/\=

“We might need the extra water and possible medical supplies if we do run into anything of substance. Better to be safe than sorry.” Her brow furrowed. “You are no longer a Captain, but are you fully retired? I don’t mean to pry, but I feel like Mrs is the wrong honorific here?” Just the title was bothering Zoi. While Mel was a civilian on this mission, she wasn’t a civilian. IT would be like calling a doctor, Mrs. It didn’t fit.

Haven, Sec

A chirp on Reez’s commbadge signaled an incoming transmission. =/\= Mrs. Reez, your kit and the requested survival kit is coming down to your location now. Please check in regularly so we know you are ok. Tressex out. =/\= came the voice of the CSO. He sounded a bit worried, but that wasn’t out of the norm for the highly-strung Antican.
