The young Betazaoid felt the wave of excitement emanating from his new boss, and couldn’t help but smile as he watched the Antican giving him such a warm welcome! Starfleet had been pretty rigid, and he had not really been prepared for such a friendly boss. He wasn’t going to complain. “Well, I actually wouldn’t mind some apple juice … if that’s okay, sir?”

Tressex nodded emphatically and ordered the drink, and a cup of tea for himself. He set the glass of juice in front of Alexander and the tea on his side and then took his seat.

He took the offered seat. “Thank you for being so welcoming. The instructors at the Academy fill you with all sorts of horror stories about what it’s going to be like once we’re finally posted, constantly being warned to stand to attention, or not speak when spoken to.” He glanced up.

Tressex shook his head, his flowing hair dancing back and forth. “Oh no no no… nothing like that… at least, not here. This is a Lab. We have much more to do than worry about every little formal protocol some find necessary. Now, that is not to say that I expect you to start calling everyone by their first names immediately, but if that comes around in a natural and mutually familiar manner, so be it. I am much more interested in your experimental and research results than I am in whether or not your uniform is in perfect order.” and he took a sip of his tea.

Zack found himself grinning along; the Antican’s energy was somewhat infectious, and the warmth from him not only spoke through his body language and speech, but the Betazoid could feel with it with his mind. It made him feel a lot more at ease.

“Now then… tell me a bit about yourself. Your background, specialties, areas of interest, an so on.”

Taking a sip of his apple juice - it had always been his favourite; he drank it constantly - Zack set the glass on the table and sat back (but still straight backed - this was his boss, after all. “Well, sir, I studied Biology on Earth in England. It was all fascinating, but I found that I was drawn more and more to the study of an individual’s bio-makeup, and since there were a few other people from other planets studying alongside me, with completely different bodily systems and functions, I decided to do my Masters in Xenobiology. It was a little overwhelming at first,” he admitted. “As the science grows with every new species that we meet, and it’s pretty impossible to know everyone’s biological functionings, but I did well. The next step was to do my doctorate, but I had developed quite the fascination with the diversity f biology amongst difference races, and where better to do that then through Starfleet, which is composed more races that I can count.”

He took a longer drink. He wanted to down the glass, but also wanted to mind his manners. “It didn’t sit well with everyone,” he said, with a slight shrug. “My father is a pharmacology professor and he had been teaching me about medicines since I was a boy, so my parents really wanted me to become a medical doctor. And I definitely am interested in medicine and it’s effects on individuals, especially how they differ in their metabolism of different species …” He gave a small smile. “Not to be ghoulish, but I’d rather be picking things apart than fixing broken bones, sir.”

Zack realised he had not said a thing about himself. “In regards to myself … there isn’t much to say. I’m a Betazoid, but was adopted by my human parents when I was a baby, and have only ever visited Betazed once when I was 8. My telepathic abilities had not started showing at that point, so it just looked like another version of Earth, to me. I get a little obssessed over my projects, and still want to do my doctorate, but I try and make room for recreation.” He gave the man a guilty grin. “But I can’t resist a good holo-simulation of a Romulan endocrine system on my night off, sir.”

“Is it alright if I ask you how long you have been the Chief Science Officer here? And what it’s like being a scientist on a medical vessel?” Zack was certainly polite.

Tressex listened intently as Alexander spoke, and made a few mental notes here and there. To his question, Tressex shrugged and looked a bit uncomfortable. “Well, I have been on board for a little less than two months. This is my first rotation on a Medical vessel, actually. I have been the Chief Science Officer for about 2 weeks. The last CSO left suddenly, and I have been playing catch up.” he said, with a gesture around the room. “I hope to have this office straightened out as soon as I can. But the mission, of course, comes first. Speaking of which, you have been briefed on what we are doing, yes?”

Tressex, CSO

The Betazoid flushed a little. “I’m afraid not, sir. Not completely. I had so many orders about boarding procedures and personnel that I didn’t get to look at the mission briefing properly. I only managed to cast a quick eye; we were to aid a Klingon and Romulan medical centre?” He near held his breath, hoping he was right. “If you could help me fill in the blanks, I will throw myself right in, sir.”

“In short, yes. We are assisting with rebuilding and moving various structures within the joint Klingon- Romulan colony. We have Mrs. Reez planet side conducting sample collections. T’Pris is here assisting me with an overall environmental assessment. We have concerns the weather may turn against the away team. How did you do in the meteorological section of your time at the Academy?”

Tressex, CSO

“Enough to get by,” Zackary admitted. “Though I’m not expert.” He thought for a moment. “Has the cause of the destruction been established? And are there any signs that injuries might not be purely physical in nature? If not, then I can look at the potentiality of unknown pathogens, or dangers in and around the base?”

The Betazoid worried he was not going to be able to find a way to be effectively helpful, and he certainly didn’t want that on his first ship and first mission.

“I believe it was a storm that did a lot of the damage, thus our emphasis on meteorology. The region is coming into it’s wet season, so construction is going to have be done as quickly and efficiently as possible. We have conducted geological and climatological surveys. There are no reports of pathogens, but there are some indigenous life forms that are dangerous.” and Tressex paused for a moment, looking at Alexander. “Biology… xenobiology…” he murmured to himself absentmindedly. After a moment or two, he snapped his fingers. “Yes. Perfect. I would like you to coordinate the cataloging and preliminary scans of all of the samples Mrs. Reez sends back. Until that time, you can assist T’Pris and I with the assessment. And don’t worry about working outside your specialty, Ensign. Just do you best.” and he leaned in and whispered conspiratorially “My specialty is energy manipulation and radiation, of all things.” and he half-chuckled-half wheezed.
