All they would find for weather records was the few references to the conditions the clinic staff had mentioned in reports. Generally, it had been in the drier season (but still receiving precipitation) and they were in a transition season before the wet season appeared. It wasn’t an area that had monsoons, but it did have a high amount of precipitation. Bosede used that argument as a reason to have the clinic replacement up and going before conditions made construction too difficult.

“Let’s keep an eye on that system.” Tressex said as he watched the model. “If it begins to develop more, we will let the Away Team know.” and he pulled up the rest of the data. “What have we seen with regards to any environmental concerns? Anything of note?”

Tressex, CSO

“Results still coming in, Lieutenant.” T’Pris said as she continued to run her scans.

The computer provided them with more details in addition to the previous info gathered: https://www.star-fleet.com/core/stf3/ogawa/notes/24727/.

Environmental:

Located about 650 kilometres from the source of the river that carved the canyon, the site of the Klingon/Romulan compound was roughly 1500 kms up the river from the its main delta on the east coast and sat at an elevation of 758m. The river itself was the longest one on the continent, and had a drainage areas of 300,000 square-kilometres. About 100km down river, the canyon opened up into a bit of a plateau that the river cut through before splitting off into other tributaries and then carrying on its way. All the rivers contributed to an abundant amount of lakes as well.

The site was 2km from the river itself and the banks of the canyon were quite high, though there were areas where access to the water could be found, if rather treacherous.

Biology/Ecology:

The local area is one of high species richness, with over 75 species of fish, 60 species of reptiles/amphibians, 120 species of birds, 60 species of mammals, 30 species of crustaceans, and at least 3000 species of insects. Of all of these, 25% were endemic to the river basin and 30 were known by the Klingon/Romulan compound to be poisonous and/dangerous, including the infamous arboreal needle snake which was known to drop down from the trees on unsuspecting victims. It was one of 16 known predators in the area, but there had been no reports of any entering the compound or camp specifically.

Botanically, the area was equally rich in tree, plant, flower and fungi species. Between the botanics, the animal species and the volcanic aspects to the geology, the soil was quite rich.

Climate:

It was currently 22 degree Celsius at the mid-day, and the humidity levels were at 55%. They were currently about 5 weeks away from when the true wet season would begin, but this shoulder season was known to have fairly consistent rain. It was still cloudy from the last downburst.

Geology:

While long dormant, the elevation in the area was due in part to a nearby dormant shield volcano that was part of a cordillera. Rising to a height of 2835 metres, the volcano was part of a chain of dormant or extinct shield volcanoes that were a part of the larger mountain range. They formed as a result of the continental plate moving over hotspots. Long glaciated by weather patterns and periods of glaciation, the later activity of the volcanoes built up several of the volcanoes into their shield shape, leaving heavy amounts of basaltic andesite in the area.

As expected there is regular low level tectonic activity in the area, but no earthquakes have ever been reported.

In addition to the andesite, the area features silicates, dacite (a quartz-bearing version of andesite) on top of older metamorphic and sedimentary rocks.

Infections/Viruses

The scans showed some basic pathogens on the planet. One very nasty type seemed to have felled a nearby grove of trees but none biologically occurring that could infect humanoids that was not already registered on the medical database. That did not mean however that carriers of off-world or mutated viral agents were not present.

T’Pris scanned the data and commented to Tressex,”We need to make the away team aware of the indigenous dangers. It is a fascinating study geologically wise.” She added as she studied the geological data.

Tressex looked at the data compiled and organized T’Pris and nodded absentmindedly as he looked at the screen next to hers. “Ok…All right… good… oh my that does not sound pleasant, snakes dropping from trees… mmm hmmm… ok.” and he looked at T’Pris. “Let’s get a weather forecast for the next fourteen days prepared and sent to the Away Team. I’ll get the geological data to Engineering. And then what are your thoughts on seeing if we can get some botanical and soil samples for analysis?”

Tressex, CSO

Tapping the computer T’Pris brought up the requested weather data.

The computer indicated it would take a few minutes to come up with reasonable models to give a forecast.

OOC: Just pasting this here for the cross-post.

=/\= Mrs. Reez, Lieutenant Tressex here. I am sending you the latest findings we have compiled. Please be cautious when you are going outside of the complex. There is some dangerous indigenous species around. =/\= and her PaDD beeped that it had received a file.

Tressex, CSO

=/\=Understood, Lieutenant. We’ll be cautious. But while we’re talking, we just had the debrief with the clinic staff. The medical side of things seems to have all the necessary focus, so I am free for now to do some more digging into the ecology and what not of the area. I could definitely use a large sample collection kit,=/\= Melaia replied.

It would be clear that the weather pattern was shifting and another front was coming in quick. The best guess for weather looked as follows:

Day 1: (today, currently mid-day): Currently. 22 C. High of 23. Low of 16 C.
Heavy rain showers. ~10 mm of precipitation. Winds: SW 15km/h; Gusts 25 km/h. Winds calmer during the day, picking up overnight.

Day 2: High of 23 C. Low of 18 C.
Rain. At times heavy. 15-20 mm of precipitation. Winds: SW 45 km/h; Gusts: 55 km/h

“Hmm for not being the wet season yet it does still get a lot of rainfall. That may hamper the teams efforts for building.” T’Pris murmured as she studied the data. “The biodiversity of this region does make this a rich area to colonize in.”

T’Pris Psychobiologist

Tressex studied the forecast and said “Too true. Too true” in the same absent minded fashion as he did when he was concentrating but still listening. “Please get the forecast to Mrs. Reez and the rest of the Away Team. I’ll prepare the collection kit for her while you get that done. Oh, and let’s keep a live climatological model of the colony and the surrounding five hundred kilometers around it going on the holo-display at all times,ok? Thank you, T’Pris.” and he walked away to one of the storage cabinets and began assembling the collection kit.

“Aye sir.” T’Pris said as she tapped the screen and sent the information in a data burst to Mrs. Reez and then set up the requested live feed program of the weather surrounding the colony on a holo display. The CSO was quite correct, this way they would have an advance warning on any incoming systems to the colony.

Once he had that done, he handed the large cube with a carrying strap attached to it to NE Gonzalez. “Please take this to the transporter room and have them beam it down directly to Mrs. Reez. Thank you.” and the Ensign nodded and left. Tressex looked around the lab and then made his way back to T’Pris. “I’m thinking we should set up some isolation stations for the incoming fungal and flora samples. Once we have them scanned and know they don’t pose any health or safety issues, we can begin the DNA and chemical modeling. What do you think?”

Tressex, CSO

“Agreed. I had heard that we were getting a new member to our team. Has he arrived yet?” T’Pris asked curiously.

OOC: Making an opening for Alex here to join us:)

OOC: Thanks Krys; I’ll wait until the boss calls me in :D

At that moment, a young Betazoid sporting an Ensign’s pip entered the science lab. He couldn’t deny his nerves, feeling a little like he was being thrown in at the deep end. But he had been warned that this was how things worked on an active ship out on a mission; you had to be ready for anything.

“Ensign Alexander, sirs,” he said, carrying with him a case containing his tricorder and various other implements. “The boss .. erm, Lieutenant Tressex, that is, sent me to assist.” He tried to think of something pro-active he could do; he knew they were monitoring weather systems, and that samples were bring brought up to the ship for analysis. But he couldn’t think of anything particularly helpful. “I’m here to be of assistance,” he added, lamely. “Whatever you need me to do … well … I’m at your disposal.”
