“Chips. It’s definitely the chips.” Mike muttered, “I wish unqualified people would not touch those.”

Michael “Mike” Thompson

Mark found a panel and removed it from the wall, revealing a set of isolinear chips. Just to look at them, there was no rhyme or reason to the way they were assembled. “I think… we’ve found the problem.”

-Lt(j.g.) Mark Pierce, CE

Mike nodded. “That’ll do it.” He rubbed the bridge of his nose, “does anything else have chips here? Because I don’t want to pull these out to fix them if I’m going to break the rest of the ship.” He chuckled, “that is the opposite of what I want to happen.”

Michael “Mike” Thompson

“This section is just for holodeck function. Don’t worry, the bridge lights won’t go out once we start working.” Mark scanned the chips. From what his tricorder said, it seemed they were exactly upside down in order. Every chip except the centre row had been moved. He showed the screen to Mike. “Someone was busy.”

-Lt(j.g.) Mark Pierce, CE

Mike shook his head, “somebody has way too much time on their hands. And a pretty decent understanding of engineering to flip them exactly like they did.” He glanced at Mark’s tricorder, nodding slightly. “They knew not to touch the center ones. That would render the holodeck inoperable until they were returned to the original positions, which I’m sure they would not want.”

Michael “Mike” Thompson

“They wanted to screw it up in just the right way.” Mark started pulling chips. “This is going to be fun.”

-Lt(j.g.) Mark Pierce, CE

“That it is.” Mike sighed as he pulled chips, laying them out in a particular way. “This should be able to expedite the process of putting them back in.”

Michael “Mike” Thompson

Mark followed suit. “Good idea.” After a while, all the chips were out, save for the centre row. “Halfway there.” He started reassembling the mechanism. He looked briefly over at the Ensign next to him. Maybe not a model officer, but quite the engineer.

-Lt(j.g.) Mark Pierce, CE

Mike began putting the chips back in, making sure they were all the way in, “last thing we want is one to be only a tiny bit out, then we’ll have to do this all over again.”

Michael “Mike” Thompson

As the last chip was put in place, Mark sighed. “If I find out who did this…” He gently pushed the wall panel back into place and secured it. “Good work Ensign. Welcome to the team. Expect many more mundane repairs like this. But such is the life of an engineer. Get used to Starfleet life and protocol and you’ll have my job someday.” He stood up and offered the Ensign a hand getting up.

-Lt(j.g.) Mark Pierce, CE

Mike took it, getting up himself. “I’ll keep that in mind.” He said with a chuckle. “I just hate people acting like all we’re good for is yelling at.”

Michael “Mike” Thompson

Mark laughed. “Engineers aren’t crucial until the lights go out. Most of the crew is better than that. If Doctor Marshall puts in another call, let me know. I’m not putting you two back in the ring. As brutal as it was, I think he learned a little something about how much he needs us.”

-Lt(j.g.) Mark Pierce, CE

“Glad to be of service.” Mike said with a smirk, a touch of chuckling to his voice. “This being reported?”
