“Of course, using the NEs in such a fashion would be highly unethical, and you definitely shouldn’t turn them into a rotating gang of yeomen.”

With a laugh Willow considered. “Can you imagine? We could get them an old school yeoman uniform too.” She chuckled for another couple of seconds and then looked at him.

“So. What managed to finally pry you away from.Starfleet medical?”

Brad took another big bite from his slice and washed it down with a swig of the not-lager, clearly looking to but time to answer.

“I’ve been telling everyone it’s because I was bored, and that is part of it,” he said, before taking a deep breath and releasing it with a sigh.

“Honestly, about a year ago, I started to feel like I could be helping more people in a post like this instead of diagnosing and treating one case of an obscure or strangely-presenting condition a week in San Fran. Then this opportunity came up, and I couldn’t turn down the chance for a change while still working with at least one old friend.”

Willow smiled. “You know they have other less hectic posts. You could have done the teaching stint in more depth.” She teased as she munched the crust from her latest slice.

“I wanted more hectic, though,” Brad said. “Routine hectic, though, if that makes any sense. Where the illnesses and injuries are going to be a lot less random and easier to explain.” Brad paused to take a drink before elaborating, “A month before I left, an aide to the Council representative from Denon - Earth native, never even been further off planet than Mars - somehow came down with a parasite found only on an Andorian colony world, despite not interacting with any Andorian colonists or any Andorians at all for a month beyond the bug’s incubation period. Took the better part of three days of poring over his activities to figure out he’d picked it up after hooking up with a trader in a dive bar.”

Willow listened. “Are you kidding! I loved the mystery of those sorts of cases…the excitement of chasing down the diagnosis…sometimes, “ she stopped and sighed, “sometimes I don’t know if I made the right decision taking this post.” She shook her head. “So did you find the trader and treat them too?”

“Oh, we found him. And the 37 other men, women, and third-genders of five other species he’d infected in the three weeks since he’d acquired the parasite himself. Because God knows it’s too hard to spend five seconds to put on a damn condom,” Brad said.

Willow chuckled quietly,

“How about you? What’s the Owie been up to since you took command?”

Lt. Cmdr. Dr. Brad Walker

“To be honest, it’s been mad! We were at a conference and ended up being held hostage and having to preform an emergency surgical procedure in let’s say less than stellar conditions. We took the hostage takers and offered sanctuary after it turned out their government were doing some freaked out Xmen style genetic manipulation, and I got chewed out by fleet command for it.”

“And then they send you a guy convicted of doing essentially the same thing. Gotta love fleet command,” Brad said.

Willow took a mouthful of beer. “Then we have a mix up with cargo that results in a family of Gastropods being accidentally transported aboard getting separated and eating half our energy to keep themselves living. We still have them…”another drink. “…they are in the environmental controlled area of the ship.”

“Planning on making a field trip to send them where they’re supposed to be once we’re done here?”

With a slight head tilt she considered. “And did I mention the fact that we have an egomaniac surgeon in sickbay, a skeleton running the dental suites…and a convicted criminal? Oh…and there was a mad man running around with a mop apparently attacking people…Rico and Scott dealt with that if the reports are to be believed. So normal ship stuff.”

“Seems like Mopman can also give the psych department something to do. I know they get bored sometimes, since most of us are Pinnacles of Mental Stability,” Brad teased. “Apart from Dr. Marshall, honestly I think he thinks he’s in an old-fashioned soap opera sometimes.”
