“Oh goodness,” Mel said with another light laugh as she glanced at her tricorder. “I’m going to stop and collect some samples, so not a bad time for story time at all.”

Setting her kit on a rock, Reez opened the large case and grabbed gloves and containers to collect soil and plant samples, and probably some insects if she could as well.

There was a moment of what she could only describe as ‘oddness’ that settled over her but it wasn’t distinct. Zoi would likely pick it up as well. It wasn’t like the gastropods where it wasn’t immediately translatable into a feeling, but more like something in the distance. Then again, they were in a refugee camp full of distressed and traumatized people, so it made sense.

Zoi stayed standing as Melaia got to work on her samples. She kept an eye on the surroundings like any good security officer, but the feeling she was getting was making her unusually uncomfortable. She kept her hands on her hips, close enough to her phaser to be easily accessible. That way she was not holding directly onto the phaser in what could be construed as an aggressive posture.

Opening a container, Melaia scooped various bits of dirt into the different cells. “So, um, well, my mother was a starfleet captain, which is in my record. But what a lot of people don’t realize is that she retired due to PTSD from the war. We both came back from the conflict to find our homeworld coping with the aftermath of the Dominion occupation. I was just a field promoted ensign, who really was only a 3rd year cadet tossed pips and told ‘you’ve graduated’. The War was a blur of battles and sleeplessness. Gong home should have been a comfort. But that’s when we learned my older brother had died during the initial assault. It broke my mother. Me too, but she was struggling so much already. When I decided to return to duty, a wall went up between us. I could be in the same room with her but it was like we were perfect strangers. Which you an imagine as telepaths to be a rather significant and intentional gesture.” You couldn’t hide yourself from other telepaths unless you wanted to and tried very hard to do so. “We were basically estranged until after I was a captain and took some leave with Jon.

Now that was a story she could understand. The war had been traumatizing for her too on many levels though she had worked through most of her issues with it well enough. She and her mother had been very close and it was part of why she worked so hard to care for her mother during the bad stints. Her mother was often a perfect stranger to her now, unable to recognize her own daughter amid the dementia and senility that plagued most of her waking hours. Even if Zoi wanted to reconnect with her mother, there was rarely a time in which that was possible these days.

Zoi sighed and nodded. “Yes. I can understand that must have been painful. I am glad though, that you have found your way back to her. I think I would give just about anything to have my old mother back again… the one who loved me and cared for me as a child and raised me on her own. She was tough and fierce and amazing.”

From somewhere nearby came the sudden feeling of distress. It manifested as pain and confusion.

Mel was about to reply to Zoi when the emotions hit her squarely just as strongly as if she had been struck. She dropped her sample container and then scrambled to pick it up. She gazed outwards into the jungle around them. “There’s someone out there. Are you picking them up? Someone is panicking.”

Not being as strong a telepath as Melaia was, Zoi had felt the sudden pain and confusion that was not hers but not in the same way that Melaia felt it. “I am.” She said by way of answering the other woman. Like a hound finding a smell. Zoi turned slowly, stepping forward if she thought she felt a stronger connection to that person who was in pain. Her hand fell to her phaser and she stepped forward. “Can you tell how far they are?”
