Adrian Sorel glanced at Sadee and then back to Em’ugo. “Are we done here or are we going to work on some assignments today?” He asked.

Adrian Sorel

“You have the rest of the hour to work on any additional assignments you were previously working on. Starting tomorrow, we will begin with organized curriculum so that everyone in this room is working on the same schedule, even if at different levels of comprehension.” She spoke up, once Adrian had finally swung the topic back to school work. “If you have any special projects you’d like to work on during school hours,” She addressed each of them, “Run them by me and we can discuss further.”

Teacher

Cai rolled his eyes as if this was not what he wanted to do. “And if your curriculum is as boring as every other one I’ve encountered?” He asked.

Cai

“Suck it up. Not everything is life is going to live up to your expectations, Mr. Taylor. You’d better learn to deal with what you have, while you still have it.” It was harsh, but what else was to be expected from a Klingon?

Em’ujo
Teacher (or a drill sergeant in disguise)

Cai sighed deeply and crossed his arms. “You know it always struck me as odd that adults say things like that when in fact they tend to indulge in the very thing they are shaming us for, complaining, pouting, rage. In terms of the psychological implications for your words, as an educator you carry extra weight in many ways. What you are doing is teaching us not to feel empathy for ourselves. So I guess I will suck it up as you say but when I get fed up of that you may find yourself being the one projected on later.”

He pushed the ear buds back into his ears and looked down at the PaDD. “People who say suck it up are betraying that they too are living with previous issue and betraying the fact they are doing nothing to help themselves. That’s what sucking it up gets you. Projection onto others. It’s not strong. It’s not how it is…it’s cowardice.”

Cai
(Pretentious pest)

Who was he to speak of strength? Of cowardice? Echego buried the urge to give him a piece of her mind, her nails digging into palms hidden behind her back. Let it go. She thought to herself. He isn’t worth it.

Adrian Sorel’s eyes widened as he listened to Cai. He himself would have never dared to say such a thing to an adult, never mind a teacher. But the other boy did have a point, a very valid one if one considered it logically. “Internalizing emotions is destructive in the long run, it is better to face one’s emotions.” He dared to add.

Sadee listened and watched with delight. She was falling hard and she didn’t even care. “I mean, seriously, have you ever seen a Klingon ‘suck it up?” She laughed out loud her eyes sparkling with rebellion.

If Echego was ready to spout off to these kids, she wore her facade like a champion. She had to give it to them, they were brighter than she initially imagines. Especially the most pretentious of them. Echego didn’t admit surprise well.

“And you, a human who understands when not to intervene in a conversation that doesn’t involve them?” Annoyance accented her feigned calm like icing on the cake, but Em’ujo knew better than to let a child push her too far. It was difficult, the restraint, but if she’d any hope in the art of teaching non-Klingon students, she would have to learn to deal with it.

“I don’t know whether you lot are infuriating scourges or whether your rebellion is almost..charming.” She could make a compliment sound like an insult; it was a trait she had mastered. “But I do know most kids wouldn’t have the backbone to retort to a teacher, nevermind a Klingon. You’ve got grit, I’ll give you that much.”

“But this isn’t a shrink session, we aren’t here to hold hands and talk about our feelings.” Any sign of praise had faded behind the stone of her classic expression. “This is a classroom, and you’re here to learn. And maybe, if you’re lucky, better yourself in the process. I don’t care if you agree with me, I don’t care if you respect me. I only care that you invest your time in your studies and make certain you walk out that door with one more active brain cell, and maybe a little knowledge to keep it happy.” She glanced pointedly at Adrian, as if saying ‘Metaphor, kid. I know that isn’t how it works.’ “If you think you can do that much, we might be able to survive the rest of this school year.”

She was beginning to wonder what happened to their previous teacher.
