Pulling a chair over, Melaia tucked one side of her chin length red curls behind and ear and sat down. Before her was the expanded habitat of their gastropod guests. The three eggs had been showing signs that they would soon hatch and she could all but feel the slight excitable energy radiating off the female.

The new habitat was larger in both area and height, with a shallow pool, exposed dirt ground, sheltered foliage areas and rocks. The water had a continuous supply of extra hydrogen that the creatures fed upon and they were clearly much happier than when they had been found roaming about the ship. Dressed in black trousers and a blue top, she had found something of a ‘uniform’ that suited her new status as a civilian scientist. And now she had a pet project, so to speak. “Any day now, Mama. I can tell you’re anxious. I remember that feeling very well,” she said in a soothing voice, placing a hand on the transparent side. She might not have entirely cracked their communication code yet, but even with their slightly empathic abilities, the creatures seemed to respond to the general emotional atmosphere of a space. She had no desire to stress them out.

T’Pris entered the labs having seen Adrian Sorel fed and off to his classes. She saw Melaia over by the gastropod tanks and made her over to join the other woman.
“Good morning, Melaia. How are they today?” She asked as she out a hand on the tank and let her own empathic tendril out to gently touch the minds of the gastropods within. She too found the creatures very fascinating and they truly encompassed the reason she had joined Starfleet.

Mel offered a smile to her fellow scientist. “Well. Mama is increasingly anxious, though not in a bad way. Just anticipating. The eggs should be hatching any time now. I’m guessing the next day or so.”

The male moved over to the female and as they touched, their bodies lit up slightly as they always did when they communicate. It still fascinated her. “I’ve been wondering about something though.,” she said, gazing back at T’Pris. “I suspect there is more to their communication methods, but testing it out might be risky for them and I don’t want to cause them distress. They’ve been through enough.”

T’Pris pondered this for a moment, “I think that as long as its not invasive it should be alright. What if we set up sensors on the habitat itself? Sensors designed to sense brain and electrical activity? Or did you have something else in mind?”
