Amari sat on the opposite side of their small dinner table from her daughter Sadee for what seemed like the first time in a very long time. A loving, warm smile spread across her face as she listened to Sadee talk about Cai. The realization that her daughter was in the midst of her very first crush both enthralled and terrified her in equal measure. She couldn’t remember the last time she had seen her daughter so happy. The twinkle in her eye that she had when she was very young had reappeared and Amari was just about to tell her daughter how very grown-up and beautiful she was when suddenly…

She had been in mid-sentence on a very-lengthy detailed story on all things Cai, and for the first time in her life she felt like she was talking to a friend instead of her mother when…

Sadee had been thrown forward, her abdomen slamming against the table full force. She then bounced sideways and landed on the deck hard. She was knocked unconscious.

She wasn’t quite sure what had happened. One moment her daughter was across from her and the next, it felt like something had hit her back and then darkness. Mere moments later the emergency lighting had kicked on and Amari realized she was on her back on the floor, still seated in her chair somehow, the remnants of dinner strewn about. She had one thought and one thought only. Where was her daughter. “Sadee!” she screamed in a near panic, though she new better than to scramble to her feet. She slowly gathered herself, doing a self-diagnostic as she went. No pain, no dizziness, no injuries apparently. She slowly made her way to her feet and moved toward her daughter who appeared to be unconscious on the ground.

The next thing she knew she could hear her mother screaming her name, but it sounded so far away. She suddenly was a aware of a burning pain in her shoulder and a very dull one in her abdomen. The reminder that she was still a child and only wanted her mother at the moment was in stark contrast to the maturity she had shown just a few moments ago. “Mommy?” she cried out, opening her eyes and realizing something bad, very bad, had just happened. She tried to sit up. Her mother was quickly by her side.

“Don’t try to get up too quickly,” Amari said softly. “Are you injured?”

Sadee, nodded her head. “My right shoulder hurts, a lot. Do you think it’s broken?”

Her mother lifted her tunic and felt the area with her hand. “I don’t think so, baby. I think it’s dislocated, but we should get you to sickbay to have you checked out, just to be safe.”

A general call came over the comm. =/\=Commander Brooks to the bridge.=/\=

=/\=Acknowledged.=/\= she replied.

-Lt. Cmdr. Brooks, XO

“Mom, you should go to the bridge. I can get myself to sickbay.” She longed to be seen as a responsible adult and this could be the first step in doing so.

“Nice try,” Amari replied, but sickbay is one deck up from here and one deck below the bridge. I can get you there.” She helped her daughter to her feet and they made their way out of the door and into the corridor.

As they entered the turbolift Sadee suddenly gasped, “I hope Cai is alright!”

Amari couldn’t help but smile, her daughter was going to be just fine.
