“It’s often said that the person who never made a mistake, never tried to do anything. Yet I somehow doubt that applies to you.” He looked her up and down as though the glasses perched on his nose allowed him to penetrate her skin. “A new crew member I presume? And in need of a boarding physical, I’d expect. Step right this way.”

Jessica’s eyebrow arched dramatically at what seemed to be a veiled compliment already from whomever this new crew member of hers was. She assumed that, since he was offering to handle her boarding physical, that he was a doctor of some kind. She was about to respond when…

“For God’s sake, Jarvis, stop creeping about like a damned vampire and trying to induce heart attacks in our visitors just to give yourself something to treat!” a man shouted from across the room.

Following the voice to its point of origin would reveal a man with a receding hairline standing in the doorway to an office suite with his arms crossed and eyebrows narrowed as he glared at the offender.

“Dr. Lemann? If you could step over here, please?”

Lt. Cmdr. Dr. Brad Walker
Chief of Staff

Dr Jarvis glared over at the figure of the Chief of staff. “I would hardly describe my movements as creeping, Commander. I’m not to blame for this room not having adequate lighting to illuminate its deepest crevices nor for the fact that the young lady had her back to me. Besides, if she were to take a heart attack, who better to treat her than a cardiologist?”

Dr J. Jarvis M.D

“Do you happen to know a good one?” Drake chimed in. “Dr Lemann, I would recommend getting away from the vampire ASAP. Especially if you’re A Positive. Dr Drake Marshall, Head Surgeon. Welcome to the Ogawa, now, between Jasper the Ripper and myself, you’ve met the extremely low bar you have to leap to be the favourite, personality wise.”

-Dr Drake Marshall

Jessica’s eyes widened as her gaze flicked between the three men in front of her, all of whom appeared to be medical personnel. Her awe of the medical facilities of the Ogawa quickly forgotten, she couldn’t help but break down into a fit of giggles at the ridiculous scene in front of her. Catching her breath remarkably quickly, she thrust her hands on her hips, adopting a mock glare that she took a moment to direct at each person in front of her.

“Yes, I’m Doctor Lemann, yes, I need a boarding physical, the lighting is just fine, my heart health is excellent, I’m O-, and vampires aren’t my thing,” she responded in one breath. Punctuating her answer with a toss of her hair, she added, “did I miss anything or are we all caught up now?”

Lieut (j.g.) Lemann, Family Practice

It was becoming somewhat irksome, Dr Jarvis mused, that anytime he approached a patient, someone else wouldn’t be far behind to chip in with their worthless two-cents. Unfortunately, it was the crux of being on a starship. He could recall many moments from his early childhood on the old freighter in which he struggled to get a moments peace and quiet to disassemble something. History it seemed had a nasty way of repeating itself. Nevertheless, when in hell…

“Dr Lemann, now that you have met our Chief of staff and,” he sneered at Marshall, “Dr Marshall, you’ve encountered the extremely low bar that qualifies one to practice medicine aboard this ship.”

“I’m glad you found that funny. I’m fairly certain Dr Walker didn’t. Well done keeping up, you’re officially ready for the Ogawa. Your choices for intake physical are a narcissistic surgeon who will approach the whole affair as though he has better things to do,” Drake raised his hand. “or an out of practice cardiologist who will spend the whole time praying you’re dying.” he pointed to Jarvis. “Unless Dr Walker will descend from on high and save you.”

-Dr Drake Marshall

“That’s cardiothoracic surgeon, Dr Marshall. And as far as being ‘out of practice’, while I might not quite be at the same level I was back on Tarisa Two, my current level of skill still exceeds your own.”

The doors to secondary sickbay had swooshed open and closed while this shindig got going. Willow stood looking disheveled in somewhat dusty leggings and a baggy vest. Her right arm was up and she held a rather dirty looking blue cloth to her hand while small rivulets of blood dried in on the sand and dust of her skin. Another blue rag was tied around a smaller cut on her left arm and her right calf where the leggings were ripped. She watched the Mexican stand off with the pretty girl in the middle. After what seemed like forever she cleared her throat, which turned into a slight cough.

“Gentlemen if this is the way you welcome all young ladies to the Ogawa, I will have to transfer one of you to Primary and let Doctor Scott have her way with you. You look like a set of vultures.”

Dr Jarvis turned and looked at their overlord, a wicked grin spreading from ear to ear. “Why, Captain,” he said in an oily tone, “have you come to do our new colleagues boarding evaluation yourself?” He then took in her dishevelled appearance and the awkward position of her right arm and the various streaks of crimson on her torn clothing. “Or would you like one of your ‘vultures’ to look at those wounds for you?”

Looking at Jessica Willow raised an eyebrow, she didn’t know the woman in teal but had heard the introduction, “Doctor Lemann, welcome. Please feel free to ignore Doctor Marshall and report directly to Doctor Walker.” He indicated Brad with a nod of her head. She then looked at the Chief of staff and gave the sort of lopsided grin that came with familiarity with someone, “I had a bit of a fall while mountain climbing on the holodeck and seem to have misplaced my dermal regenerator…mind if I borrow?” She asked with the air of asking for a cup of sugar.

“Yeah, help yourself,” Brad said. “You know where they’re kept. Grab a nurse to help you if you need it, I’ll be busy with the MDs for the foreseeable future.”

Dr Jarvis then turned to look at Dr Walker, “tell me, Commander, is it now sickbay policy to hand out medical implements to a patient who has suffered several lacerations, what is potentially a fracture to their right arm and may very well have some level of concussion? Not to mention the potential for internal bleeding.”

“When that patient is a medical professional in her own right, who’s more than qualified to perform a self-assessment of her injuries and most importantly isn’t one step away from the brig for insubordination, yes,” he said.

“Now, I’m going to try and make a better introduction to this department than the pair of you have to Dr. Lemann, and then I’ll handle her physical myself. Dr. Marshall, you’re going to check conditions in Primary Sickbay for the next three hours until and unless I need you for an emergency.

Dr. Jarvis, you’re going to report to your quarters and not come back here for 24 hours unless you or the entire rest of the crew are dying. While the both of you are out, I expect you to review both the chain of command, and the code of conduct, because neither of you are following either of them to an acceptable level.”
