“I can give you the particulars of the cause of death, but I’ll need an engineer to give a better explanation of the how,” Brad cautioned.

He guided Brooks over to Ens. Hart’s body, and pointed out the large piece of machinery sticking out of his chest. “This thingy here appears to have fallen from wherever it was, into his upper chest cavity. It initially pierced the pericardium, but then corkscrewed its way up, through his aorta, causing near instant death. Unfortunately, due to the nature of the movement, I can’t conclude it was an accident. Something or someone moved this thing in him to cause more damage, in just the few seconds of darkness this part of the ship experienced.”

“That’s troubling. Any witnesses? Have we identified the victim?” She steeled herself. She glanced at the lifeless corpse but didn’t recognize this particular person. Which was odd. She had spent many hours going over the ship’s manifest and crew compliment. She was sure she could recognize ninety percent of the faces on the ship if not the names. “I don’t recognize him.”

Brad shrugged. “The scans give his name as Ens. Branson Hart, but the person who reported his death was calling him something else. Lt. Haven dragged her off a couple minutes before you arrived.”

“Regardless, we need to process the scene so we can release these people. No one leaves, understood?”

“Right. No one else leaves,” Brad said, deciding against pointing out that security had already taken someone away.

Commander Brooks couldn’t immediately remember the name Ens. Branson Hart anymore than she could remember his face. She walked quickly to the nearest terminal. =/\=Computer, display personnel file of Ensign Branson Hart. Visual only.=/\=

-Lt. Cmdr. Brooks, XO

The computer replied and displayed his file. The image matched the man on the deck and his record showed him a recent Academy graduate who had been on the Ogawa only a few months. This had been his first posting.

=/\=Computer, where was Ensign Hart quartered?=/\= She would leave the processing of the scene to security. She wanted to see where the young man lived.

-Lt. Cmdr. Brooks, XO

Suddenly a young woman approached the XO, wearing a security uniform. She had white-blonde hair, cut into a bob, and striking green eyes. Her ears were pointed and even though she was small in stature, she had a great presence around her.

“Commander, may I be of any assistance?” Duvosa asked, eyeing the XO curiously, one eyebrow arched.

-Lt. jg Duvosa, SEC

Commander Brooks immediately recognized the young woman from her personnel file photo as their newest security officer. One does not forget a striking face such as the one standing before her. “Yes, Lieutenant you can. As a matter of fact, our Chief of Security seems to have more important matters to attend to. This entire area is a crime scene and needs to be processed. Do you feel up to the task?” Amari made a mental note to inquire as to why the CoS had failed to report as ordered.

“You will report to the 2O Commander Walker. I am going to go to the deceased’s quarters to see if I can find anything that might give as some insight. When you are finished, contact the ship’s coroner to have the body removed.” Not only was this a big job, but it was also a big test. They would soon know whether Lieutenant Duvosa had the chops for the job.

-Lt. Cmdr. Amari Brooks, XO

=/\=Ensign Hart’s quarters are on Deck Five, Room 567,=/\= the computer answered.

Commander Brooks turned to go but stopped dead in her tracks. There was something inside her that told her maybe she shouldn’t go alone. She turned back around swiftly. “On second thought, Commander Walker, could you handle things here, please? Come with me to Deck Five Lieutenant,” she said to the young woman who had joined them. She shot a look at Walker that said, ‘something isn’t quite right around here.’

Lt. Cmdr. Brooks, XO

Brad nodded, and returned his attention to the machinery itself that had ended up embedded in Ensign “Shredded” Hart. Not the best time for a bad joke, but at least he hadn’t said it out loud…

Now, to see if he’d picked up anything from his engineer brother…

OOC: James, I’ll make a separate thread for us.
