Harry’s heart was racing as he slowly made his way to the psychiatry suite for his boarding psyche eval. He nervously wrung his hands as he approached the door, sweat dripping from his forehead. He wiped his brow, took a couple of deep breaths and decided it was better just to get it over with. He cautiously entered and cleared his throat then said in a high pitched squeak. “Um…Ensign Harry…Harry Goodwin…I’m here to…that is…I…board…psyche…” he rambled into gibberish as sweat continued to trickle down the side of his face. He mentally scolded himself and handed over a padd with his assignment details.

Ensign Goodwin (Sci)

A nurse took his PaDD “It’s ok. I’ll take you over to see a doctor now Ensign.” She guided him to a biobed. “Welcome aboard the Ogawa.” She smiled. She turned and found the nearest available labcoat. “Ensign Goodwin, boarding physical, biobed 4.” Drake glared. “Thank you nurse, for the giant waste of time. I’m sure if anyone comes in requiring emergency surgery, you’ll direct them to the nearest immunologist.”

Drake walked over to biobed 4. “Ensign Harry Goodwin, Science Department. Flyweight for your height, according to last measurements. By the looks of you that hasn’t changed.” He took out a tricorder and scanned the Ensign. “I’m Doctor Marshall. Hopefully you’ll be out of here before you need to remember that.”

OOC: Oops. Saw boarding exam, thought sickbay.just ignore all of that.

OOC: That’s ok, he’s a bit dopey, we can work with it!

IC: Harry gulped as he realised he ‘d wandered into sickbay, not to the psychiatry suite. He laughed nervously as he felt the sweat trickle down his face. “…good one doctor…” he offered and mentally scolded himself for yet another mistake. He fidgeted nervously on the biobed, watching his blood pressure creep up by the second.

Ensign Goodwin (Sci)

Drake couldn’t help but smirk a little. “Either you have some of the worst hypertension I’ve ever seen. Or, you’re nervous. Other than your slightly surreal blood pressure, you seem ok. Recent infections or injuries?… Myocardial infarctions? Aneurysms?”

-Dr Drake Marshall

With an almost imperceptible head shake Harry gulped nervously. “Um, no, I mean, not that I know of…I mean I guess I probably would know if I had…” he fumbled over his words before taking a few deep breaths to calm himself. “Sorry doctor…this is my first assignment out of the academy…I’m a bit nervous…” he added apologetically.

Ensign Goodwin (Sci)

“You don’t say.” Drake replied with a smile. “Well, I have good news, my twitchy friend, you’re not dying. Even better, you’re fit to be a scientist. If you were going into security, I would recommend adding some muscle to the skin and bone you’re currently made out of, but you probably won’t need it. Unless you encounter an oddly heavy beaker.”

“Let me ask you something. How’d you do at the Academy?”

-Dr Drake Marshall

Harry cleared his throat awkwardly and gave a rather forced laugh. “I…uh…well, I was top of the class?” he offered, knowing that wasn’t really what the doctor was asking. He stared blankly at the doctor for a moment before adding, “I didn’t really have a lot of friends though, it may surprise you to know that I’m not that comfortable around new people…” he chuckled, surprised at himself making a joke.

Ensign Goodwin (Sci)

“You don’t say. This conversation has been such a natural two way street. I feel like I know you. I can make a recommendation for the CSO to keep you on the ship, lest the wind carry you off away from the team on a mission. But I wanted to make sure he’d agree. Let’s see ‘Ensign Harry Goodwin, Medical Records. Boarding evaluation: USS Ogawa. It is my professional assessment that Ensign Goodwin is fit for service aboard a Starfleet vessel. However, it is my recommendation that he remain onboard the Ogawa rather than carrying out away team duties. Signed: Drake Marshall, M.D.’ There. I’ll send the last part to the CSO and you can stay safely with your studies. Unless, of course, you have some compelling objections before I file this.”

-Dr Drake Marshall

Harry clenched his jaw and took a deep breath. He knew he wasn’t very good around people but he wasn’t too fond of the doctor’s mocking tone. He took a moment and reminded himself of his self-assertion classes and pictured himself in front of his old high school chemistry class. Opening his eyes with a gritted determination, he hopped down off the bed and squared up to the doctor, despite being several inches shorter than him, and spoke with an unusual calmness and reserve. “Whilst I appreciate your assessment doctor, and I realise I am not the most comfortable in social situations, I am perfectly capable of carrying out my duties on the ship or on an away mission, so unless you have any medical reason for my duties to be restricted I would kindly ask that you remove your previous recommendation from the record?” Harry asked, his eyes locked on Marshall’s.

The young Ensign wasn’t really sure where his new found confidence had sprung up from or how long it would last but he hoped it would at least make it to the end of his examination.

Ensign Goodwin (Sci)

“There he is. Now you’re going to survive. I would still recommend some time in the gym putting on a muscle or two, but away team objections removed. You’re cleared for duty Ensign. I got promoted fast, and it’s all about holding yourself like you matter. A little confidence goes a long way Harry.”
