Brad’s face shifted into a smile. “With your performance thus far, I’m quite certain neither me, nor anyone else on this ship, is ready for you, Doctor, but we’ll carry on regardless,” he said. ‘Ah, to be 15 years younger…’

He walked over to a biobed two down from the Captain and XO and patted it. “Up you go.”

Jessica grinned charmingly at Walker. “Now that’s what I like to hear, Doctor,” she responded, following him to the nearby biobed. Athletically, she hopped up onto it and obediently positioned herself for the quick check. “I feel like I just did this a few months ago,” she commented with a laugh. Her records would reflect that she had, in fact, received a boarding physical a few months ago and that it had come back with no concerns except that she was slightly underweight. Walker’s scans would confirm there had been no changes.

As Walker went about his business, she turned her head to study him, enjoying watching the older doctor work. “So you’ll have to get me up to speed… you’re the Chief of Staff on the Ogawa, right? Is that like a Chief Medical Officer on a standard ship?”

“Yes and no,” Brad replied. “It’s more about management than treatment. You’re actually the first ‘patient’ I’ve seen in about 6 weeks,” he said. ” When I was a CMO on the Agamemnon, and then the Vanguard, I did a lot more of the little things, but here, more than half the ship’s crew reports to me in some fashion, so you guys get to do the fun stuff and I get to unruffle all the feathers after the fact. “

He looked down at the scan results, then back up at Jessica.

“How’s your appetite?”

“Ah, so you’re doing your token doctoring by running a tricorder over me and calling it good?” Jessica queried, her eyes dancing with amusement and laughter.

“Every minute I spend out here is a minute I’m not accelerating the degeneration of my optic nerves by staring at PaDDs for 8 hours a day,” Brad said with a shrug.

“I hear they have a read aloud function,” Jessica responded with a wicked grin, comfortably poking fun at her new boss. “Or I’d be happy to arrange an eye exam…”

She couldn’t imagine what would lead someone to drop medicine for a life of administrative paperwork, but she filed that away as a conversation for another time. It was probably best not to insult one’s superior’s life choices at such an early stage in their interaction. As she pondered this, his question had gone unnoticed and finally, after a beat, she realized he was waiting for an answer and bubbled, “oh, I love food!”

“You’re eating regularly, then?” Brad asked, keying for a deeper scan from the biobed. It could be something simple, like she simply forgot a meal now and then, but it also could be something chronic, since this seemed to be an issue previously noted.

“Oh, sure,” Jessica responded with a shrug. She didn’t really keep track of when she remembered to eat something. She wiggled impatiently on the biobed and batted her green eyes at Walker. “Will I live, sir?” she queried.
