First stop for Michael on arrival was to head to the Captain’s Ready Room to let the Captain know her new Engineer was here.

He walked across the sunken bridge to the Captain’s Ready Room and rang the chime. His transfer orders were at hand and he was ready to get his hands dirty.

Willow looked up at the door from the replicator and glanced almost wistfully at the small plate and sandwich she held. “ Come in!” She called and walked back to the desk to place the plate down.

Michael entered at the invitation and stood to attention once he saw her. “Captain Willow, ” he said by way of introduction, “I am Lt JG Michael Easter, here from the Academy. My transfer orders and …” he trailed off when he saw her put her sandwich down on her desk. His expression turned apologetic.

Willow watched him as he reported in. As he trailed off she blinked. He continued.

“I’m sorry, Captain, I didn’t mean to interrupt you while you were eating,” he said.

-Lt JG Michael East, Eng

Turning slightly she looked at the deli item and frowned in slight confusion. “Oh no. Don’t worry about that.” She smiled and walked to her chair.

“Please sit.”

Michael smiled back at her, and said, “yes, Captain.” Then thinking he should explain his reaction from earlier, he added, “I’m the youngest brother of 10. I had 5 sisters and 4 brothers older than me, and in that house if you ordered food and didn’t eat it straight away, one of my brothers, usually George or Simon would eat it before you could get it into your mouth. Believe me, Captain, if one of them were here, that sandwich would already be eaten. All of us including mum and dad, enough for a cricket team, and I, more often than not was made 12th man.”

Willow listened patiently.

He chuckled, and then said, “I tend to prattle on when I’m nervous …” He may have been about to say more, but he stopped speaking suddenly and looked at his hands, which still held his transfer orders, and he offered them to her, “my transfer orders, Captain.”

With a smile she reached out and took the transfer orders from him.

Great work, Doofus, he thought to himself, wonderful first impression, she’s sure to think you’re a stayer. Then he became panicked, he hoped she wasn’t able to read minds. He closed his eyes and breathed deeply, trying to keep himself calm…

“Relax Lieutenant, you seem nervous I assure you that you have done nothing to make me think ill of you. It’s always nerve wracking to transfer to a new ship. Can I offer you a drink?” She indicated the replicator.

“Thank you for your understanding, Captain, a water would be nice,” Michael replied, opening his eyes and smiling at her, “I truly am happy to be here …”

Willow nodded and stood to fetch the water.

He was interrupted at that point by his combadge sounding, “excuse me captain,” he said.

“Lt JG Michael Easter,” he said, after tapping the badge. He suspected he knew who it was, however.

Michael’s suspicion proved true, as it was his niece, Kenzie.

=/\= Hi Uncle Mike. I’m still here, waiting as you asked me to. Have you asked Willow about me yet? When are you coming back here? Can I please watch Unreal Desperate Housewives of Betazed, please? =/\=

Michael was stunned, and he looked at the Captain and mouthed, I’m sorry. to her. He was silent, he didn’t know what to say to his niece.

Willow…stared. One hand clutched around the glass of water. She wasn’t really sure how else to respond so when the new lieutenant mouthed his apology she automatically nodded her head in agreement still looking mildly stunned.

=/\= Uncle, are you there? =/\= Came her voice into the air, he rolled his eyes, and then decided to speak some more.

“Kenzie, this is for important Star Fleet business,” he said into his combadge, “not for personal matters. Please do not use the com channels again unless it is an emergency or similar.”

The com channel went silent at that, and Michael looked apologetically at Captain Taylor.

“My niece, Kenzie, Captain,” Michael said, “she is 13 and her parents wanted her to stay with me for 6 months or so. I couldn’t very well leave her behind on Earth Spacedock, and they had a delivery to make. She shouldn’t be too much trouble … I hope.”

A brief pause, and then he said, “I’m 23, what do I know about caring for a 13 year old girl?”

Willow offered him the drink, belatedly realising she still had it. “Uhh…nothing. I know quite a bit about caring for 16 year old boys however.” She then added “My Brother.” As if this clarified matters. “Your niece seems to have settled herself in well.” A smile spread across her features.

“Oh she knows how to settle in, Captain,” Michael agreed, taking the glass from her. He smiled back, before saying, “I trust her staying here, in my quarters, won’t be or cause, a problem. I am apparently responsible for her care for the next little while and if there aren’t the resources available to make it work on the Ogawa, I may have to return to Earth Spacedock to provide her the care she needs.”

“Will this be a problem?”

-MAKE, Engineer

Willow shook her head. “I don’t see why it would be we have a few crew members with family on board. Myself included. So long as she doesn’t get herself into mischief.” She thought if cai a moment then continued. “I’m sure it will be fine.”

Settling back into her seat Willow surveyed the new engineer. “So is this your first posting on a medical ship?” She asked.

With a stealhy hand the fish were fed their daily meal. Then as if the person had never even been a member of the crew they vanished behind the screen to hide in the depths of the rosters.

“Yes, Captain, but I asked for a posting on a Medical Ship. They had to wait for one to be ready for me. That’s why I spent time straight out of the Academy on Earth Spacedock, realigning systems that never seemed to be unaligned. There were no medical ships in need of a new engineer, until this opening came up. Though I’m by no means a Doctor, I undertook elective subjects at the Academy in the maintenance of medical equipment - biobeds and the like. I figured that if I was badly injured and needed to be patched up, that I would rest easier knowing that I had made sure there were no faulty components in the system beforehand,” Michael replied, “you know what teenage girls are like, better than I do, even though I had 5 sister growing up, do you think it is possible she can get through life on the ship without getting into mischief?” Michael laughed at that and said, “I’m really not making a good fist of this, am I?”

-MAKE, Eng
