Ana eyed Gordon as he selected a lollipop. She could tell that he had selected at random, as the orange-colored and -flavored confection didn’t really seem to fit her expectation of him.

Gordon eyed the orange flavoured lollipop, he hated orange flavoured things. However he was committed now, it would look stupid if he put it back…

With a forced smile he put it in his mouth, trying to mask his disgust with an equally unconvincing “mmm”.

An unexpectedly sympathetic look came over the counselor’s face as Muir answered her question. “I understand,” she replied, her voice quiet but the most sincere that it had been thus far in their interaction. “You know there’s nothing wrong with that, right? Not everyone wants to be in charge of someone…” Her fingers reflexively went to the collar of her uniform before she caught herself and returned them to a folded position. The shiny pips on her uniform were always a distinct reminder that, as a credentialed doctor, she was expected to hold an officer commission but, frankly, the training had not been of interest to her thus far. One slightly lengthened inhalation later and she had steadied herself, tucking a loose lock of hair behind her ear before continuing. “Well, is there anything you would like to discuss with me?”

Gordon nodded, “Taking charge isn’t the problem ma’am, my mother always said I was a bossy little sod.” He said smiling, “I think I’m good Ma’am, do you have anything for me or can I let you get back to work?” He said moving to the edge of his seat. He mentally tried to picture somewhere he could discreetly ditch the foul tasting confectionary he’d idiotically picked up, it had sat in house mouth slowly disintegrating.

Ana reflexively held up the small waste bin beside her desk to Muir as her eyes flicked over his face and noted his discomfort. It ended up being far more practical to have the small receptacle there than having patients traipsing over to the replicator to dispose of the small sticks in the confections. As she went through the swift movements, she processed Muir’s response and felt herself flushing slightly. She knew better than to project her own discomfort onto a patient, yet here she was doing exactly that. “You’re cleared for duty, then, Crewman,” she finally uttered, almost sounding more like a question than the statement it was.

Gordon blanched at the bucket, was he really that transparent? Well there went his poker game chances…

He smiled and deposited the lollipop in the bucket, he noted that she was flushed. Hopefully she wasn’t about to vomit on him from across the table, he didn’t get a chance to ask if she was alright before she ended the session.

“Uhh yes ma’am, I think we’re done here. Thank you for your time.” He said formally and stood up, standing for a minute awkwardly before smiling and beating a hasty retreat out the hatchway.
