Mariah knew change aboard a Federation starship was inevitable, and that had proven especially true for medical ships like the Ogawa, where events were fast paced and high stress. Medical personnell, in her opinion, faced some of the most stress but were not always respected by the crew at large given the power they were seen to wield because they could remove people from duty. Of course, that was not a decision made lightly or without just cause, but she’d yet to meet too many people who ever really thought the cause could be just enough, in their cases, or in the case of anyone they loved and respected. This was a particular burden for mental health professionals, who often had the challenge of treating wounds not many could easily see, and the pain of which could be easily hidden.

It was for this reason she was eager to meet Lieutenant Darren, a new addition to Mariah, who’d landed this assignment for her first clinical posting. The young woman had to be quite capable and intelligent to take on a healer’s dream sort of assignment, and Grayson was eager to get to know her. She rang the chime outside Darren’s personal office, glad she’d agreed to meet Mariah.

The sharp chime of the office door startled Ana out of her thoughts as she read through the latest neurobiological research coming out of Starfleet research laboratories. She shook her head lightly, rubbing her right ear as if to try to rub out the sound. It must already be time to meet the young doctor who had been assigned to her department with Reez’s departure. A small gust of air crept out of her mouth at this realization and she closed her eyes briefly to try to steady herself. Here went nothing…

“Enter!” she called crisply. As the door slid open, Grayson would note that there were no personal effects in Darren’s office. The only items that differed from standard Starfleet issue were a container of brightly colored lollipops and her medical school diploma affixed to the wall behind her desk.

The doors hissed open and Mariah stepped inside, her eyes naturally searching for the woman she intended to meet with. Like Darren, Mariah wasn’t concerned with making her office overly personal, but she was interested in making it comfortable. She briefly scanned the office’s austere surroundings and was curious about the woman who had made such design choices. “Dr. Mariah Grayson,” the psychiatrist introduced with a small smile. “Am I disturbing you? If so, I can come back later. I know how it can be to be neckdeep in reading.”

OOC: So I think Grayson is a tad older than Darren. I just wanted to point that out in case you wanted to note that. I noticed you referred to her as young… no worries. I just thought I’d point it out in case we wanted to address that in our character development. She’s got a bit of experience so her rank in character might be a little tricky to explain, but I’m mostly focusing on her education and training rather than her rank if that makes sense?

OOC: Oops, sorry about that. I should have clicked on your bio before generalizing.

The dark eyes of Ana’s heritage met Grayson’s as the door slid open. She remained silent as the woman entered her office, carefully placing the PaDD she had been reading on her desk. She took the extra time to make sure that it was neatly aligned with the edge and then returned her attention to the new psychiatrist. Once her task was complete, she pushed her chair back and got to her feet in one motion, leaning over her desk to offer a hand to Grayson. “Dr. Anastasia Darren,” she offered in response and then gestured to the pair of chairs positioned there. “Have a seat.”

As she went through the routine of introductions, she briefly pondered the woman’s comments and felt a small smile dancing at the edge of her lips at the knowledge that Grayson was also a fan of reading. An idea sprung to mind and she tilted her head to the side slightly. “What do you enjoy reading?”

Dr. Darren, CoP

Grayson leaned forward and shook the other woman’s hand warmly. When she was asked what she liked to read, Mariah was pleasantly surprised. She hadn’t expected such a casual question from the woman whose office wasn’t personalized. “Well, professionally speaking, I enjoy reading about forensic psychiatry as well as trauma psychiatry. As far as when I read for fun, I enjoy mystery novels, especially crime novels,” she added with a grin.
