M’Nalie arrive early to the music appreciation clubs weekly meeting. It wasn’t her habit to go normally but since she had gotten married she had started exploring activities that her mate liked. It was part of a tradition humans called dating. M’Nalie had insisted upon doing so as while she had accepted a arranged marriage as her duty to her clan.
She had little desire to follow Caitan custom to closely. That is she had no interest in being tied down by the dictates of Clan, caste and her Mother into a loveless union that existed solely to create the next generation.

She brought the Music all the club used into being and added a assortment of musical instruments that were the usual choices of the club members. To this she added A Caitan instrument. It’s name translated to caterwaul in Galactic standard. If played badly it made a horrendous noise. M’Nalie had no clue what to do with it and kept her distance. Xouchi, her mate, was one of six Caitans who were considered masters of the instrument. As for herself she took up a simple hand drum.it was by reputation a simple instrument that it was hard to use improperly. Or so she was told.

As the club members arrived they took up their instruments. Tonight was going to be a jam session so no planned or formal arrangement. Each musican would add to the sound as they saw fit. Her mate would be running late as his job as a teacher kept him when one of the kids needed more aid with formal musical training. He had suggested she sing but M’Nalie thought he must be making fun of her. All she knew were war chants and warcrys.

She sat and waited not doing much more than marking time till her mate would arrive.

Drake entered with a guitar case in hand. He saw the array of instruments lined up and said “I hope it’s not a problem that I brought my own.” He sat down and unpacked a vintage electric guitar. As he checked the tuning, he commented “It’s a 21st century Gibson Melody Maker. My personal favourite of all the guitars I’ve owned. Your drum from Cait?”

Smiled being careful not to show teeth, “Yes in so far as it’s of a type pretty much every culture and species has a version of. We just call it a hand drum. On Earth it is called a Tambor. It you add bells it is called a tamboriine weplat it without the bells using a striker.”, and M’Nalie showed her other hand which held a stick with a wire whip like tail end each wire ending in a wooden bead. This striker was held ham fisted so either end could be used by swiveling the wrist. “Metal or vynal strings on your guitar Doctor Marshall?” She asked as she brought the drum up to test it’s sound. “The instruments laid out are in case someone new shows up as I am told the regulars are particular about using real instruments.”, and she smiled again.

“Metal. More authentic to the instrument and the era it comes from.” Drake looked around to see what other instruments were present, and who else showed up.

Most of the instruments were familiar Earth versions with a few exceptions. There was a Caitan dance harp which humans had nicknameed a caterwaul because of the noise it made whe inexperianced players tried it.it like a theramon used the musicians magnetic fields to create it’s sound. M’Nalie’s Tambor was sized for her so much larger than the usual such hand drum. Peoplexwere starting to arrive now. A ecclectic bunch of NE loners, misfits and eccentrics that music clubs tended to attract as well as the more dedicated musical talents on the ship. The usual cacophonous noises of instruments being tuned and people warming up began.

“Doctor I would like to schedule an apointment when it is convenient for you. There are changes to my routine and lifestyle who’s impact I require further information about.”, M’Nalie stated in a serious tone. It was at that moment when M’Nalie’s mate strode in. Tall lithe athletic and very much having the obvious confidence and grace you would expect from a Caitan performer. He was assigned to the ship as the childrens music teacher. What was perhaps most noticable was by color and markings he was not the same sub species as M’Nalie being of the commonly known Caitan genus. M’Nalie who tended to be semi formal absolutely had her facade melt as the couple greeted each other by touching noses and polite social contact that Caitans were known for. M’Nalies mate then turned to the doctor who his mate had been talking to ,”Hello. I am Xouchi. A pleasure to meet you.”, And while the two felines both faced the doctor they hadn’t completely disengaged from each other.
