IC: “Well, let’s see what we can find out about you,” Brad said, walking over to the biobed and ordering a full, deep scan of Hart. It would record how much blood he had left in his body, whether or not he had any mind-altering substances in his system, and the presence of any foreign particles on or inside his body.

Jarvis watched as the Commander entered medlab three. Of all the rotten luck, it had to be Walker who had come to do the autopsy. The only thing worse would have been if the Captain herself had graced secondary sickbay with her presence. However, she had a ship in crisis to deal with so that remote possibility had dropped to zero.

He rolled his eyes before pressing his comm badge, =/\= Dr Walker, do you require assistance with our friend in there? =/\=

Dr J. Jarvis M.D.

When Brad heard the obsequious tones over his own comm badge, he wondered if the universe had heard his idle musings of a few moments ago. He was quite tempted to brusquely brush off the inquiry, but something stopped him. Sure, Jarvis was a pain in the neck, and all things considered he’d rather have him anywhere else but his ship (preferably quite a few parsecs away, in any direction), but this could be an opportunity. Gods knew the man knew more about the things violence could do to a human body than probably anyone else on the ship, his input could be quite valuable, and it could be an opportunity to build a bridge, however rickety.

=/\=I don’t require assistance, but if you’re offering, I’ll be glad for the company if nothing else,=/\= he replied. =/\=I see you at the door, one second and I’ll let you in.=/\=

Since the scan was still running, he crossed the medlab and set up a sterile field around the door that would remove any particular particles from Jarvis as he crossed the threshold, then unlocked the door.

The scan showed three notable oddities: One, that there were definite traces of tachyon particles on and in Hart’s body. Two, while none of his systems seemed to be functional, for some reason there was a barely perceptible amount of energy in his cerebral cortex. It wasn’t quite enough to result in the action potential required to generate a brain oscillation (or brainwave), but brain function did not seem to be entirely nil. Thrid, and perhaps even more strangely, was that Hart’s blood had not coagulated. It wasn’t pumping, but it was still potentially functional.

“Well, now,” Brad said, returning to the biobed holding what he’d thought was Hart’s corpse. Now, he wasn’t so sure. “This is damn peculiar.”

Could the Losa character, when manifesting, have materialized in the same pocket of space-time already occupied by Hart? If that was the case, and they’d had some sort of merger, could that have shut down Hart’s body? It didn’t account for the stab wound, or the resulting damage, but honestly, with a good enough surgeon, who Brad had to admit was just about to walk through the door, it wasn’t inconceivable that Hart could be revived…

Dr Jarvis strode into the medlab and took in the corpse of Ensign Hart and the readings displayed on the biobed. A smirk formed on his thin lips. At last, something interesting. He turned to look at Brad. “It seems you have a Schrodinger’s Ensign, Commander,” he said. He pulled out his tricorder and began to examine Hart’s wounds to determine the cause of ‘death’.

Dr J. Jarvis M.D.

“Yep,” Brad said. “Of course, his heart is mostly shredded, but that’s hardly an obstacle in the 24th Century, look at Admiral Picard. I expect that if we got an artificial heart and connected it, it would start to pump his blood like he were still alive. Then, we’d just have to deal with the ‘lack of brain activity’ problem.”

“Well, we could take a leaf out of Dr Bashir’s book and replace his brain with positronic circuits, but I suspect you would rather we attempt to salvage what’s left of his own,” Dr Jarvis said with a wry smile. He did not know the Ensign, but given the average level of intelligence he’d witnessed aboard the ship thus far, a positronic brain might be considered an improvement.

OOC: Cookies for you!
IC:
There was significant damage to his heart and under normal circumstances he would have died simply from blood loss and lack of circulation. But in this strange circumstance, with the unexpected particles floating through his body and their presence in a part of space where the laws of physics didn’t always behave as expected, it was quite possible that Ensign Hart wasn’t quite dead the way they would define it. The residual energy in his body could very well be sustaining systems in a way that didn’t match known science.

“Well?” Brad asked with a side-eye glance at Jarvis. “Up to a bit of cardio-thoracic transplant surgery?”

He could hardly believe he was even offering the ethically-challenged man the option of (further) cutting into Hart’s chest, but he’d done that kind of work far more recently than Brad had. Perhaps, once Hart had a heartbeat again and properly-oxygenated blood was circulating to his brain, they could stand a chance of properly reviving him (or whatever entity was trying to possess his body), and get an answer as to how that brace coil had ended up in his chest.

Dr Jarvis surveyed Hart’s ‘corpse’, glanced back at the scan data, then turned to Walker, “you assume that replacing his heart will start his blood circulating again? However, I doubt the solution will be that simple. The man has suffered wounds that should have killed him, but have not. I suspect the tachyon particles that the scans have picked up on, have somehow frozen him in the moment between life and death. We can replace his heart and suture his wounds, but I doubt that alone will revive him. Although it is probably the best place to start. Otherwise, when we open Schrodinger’s box, he will surely be dead.”

Dr J. Jarvis M.D.

“I think there’s a good possibility of that, yes,” Brad said. “It’s mostly an autonomic function, little involvement from the brain required, after all. We’ll also need to give him a few units of blood to replace what he’s already lost, but I think it’s worth trying.”

Dr Jarvis looked in more detail at the Scan of what remained of Ensign Hart’s heart. The Commander was right, there was not enough left to save the organ, a transplant would be the only option. “I suppose we had better replicate a new heart and several units of blood and prepare for surgery.” With that, he strode over to the lab’s replicator and programmed it to produce one artificial (human) heart and several units of blood. Walker may have had the rank, but this was his domain. Not only was this a surgical procedure, but a cardio one; his speciality. That being said, should Hart’s brain prove to be unsalvageable, he wouldn’t mind having a crack at replacing it with positronic circuitry.

Brad grinned, and pulled a tray of surgical instruments from the biobed. “You can have the lead, Doctor,” he said, glad that Jarvis had at least somewhat come around to his way of thinking here. While he worked, he’d ponder the problem of how to deal with the apparent brain death. A cortical stimulator would be the obvious first step, but if that didn’t produce results…
