“My main curiosity is the arm, honestly,” Brad said. “How did you come to need a prosthetic?”

Lt. Cmdr. Dr. Brad Walker
Chief of Staff

Ana had been trying to think of some kind of polite question to encourage professional discourse, realizing that it was likely expected in this situation, but Walker’s direct question saved her from her misery. She focused her black eyes on Bandoo curiously, taking a quick moment to glance at the prosthesis before returning her attention to his, um, face.

Darren, CoP

Dr Black seemed genuinely pleased to be invited to sit, he walked to the offered seat his feet clicking as though he wore heels under his billowing robe. He sat and seeing Willow was now not paying him attention turned his skull to look at the newcomer too.

Willow and creepy dentist

Poosh reached over and pressed a few well hidden switches in the deltoid-region on the prosthetic. Internal mechanisms whirred as a rod extended from the middle of the shoulder. It clicked to a halt and the arm went still. He took hold of the rod and pulled. The arm came away from the shoulder leaving only a dermally implanted ring of metal where the cuff of the limb made contact, and a metal socket protruding from a stump where an organic arm would attach to a torso. He flexed the stump once or twice and reversed the process. As the rod started to reinsert he spoke. “I was hatched with only one arm. Once I left the pools I was fitted for a prosthesis. As I grew, I had several arm replacements This last one,” he flexed the fingers of the arm as the rod seated home. “I’ve had for 10 years.”

Ana’s attention again returned to the prosthetic as Bandoo demonstrated its use. Her head tilted to the side as she watched carefully. While she’d chosen quickly to specialize in psychiatry, her basic medical education had never left her and even she was fascinated by the technology that gave the assistant CMO another appendage. She was sure that there was some sort of question she was supposed to ask here about how being different had affected Bandoo, but he seemed to be quite adjusted to the situation.

Dr. Darren, CoP

“It looks remarkably well crafted,” Brad said. “How’s the response time between the nerves in your shoulder and the circuits in the prosthesis?”

Lt. Cmdr. Dr. Brad Walker
Chief of Staff

“The arm’s artificial nerves are partially biological. In order to more easily fuse my nervous system to the machinery the nerves are a flexible carbon lattice supporting a culture-grown nervous structure from my own tissues. However, since they also include non-biological components as well, they don’t quite conduct as quickly as a biological limb would. The last time I ran diagnostics it showed nerve conduction speed of 53 meters per second. The low end of average. ” He looked at his hand and smiled. “I don’t notice any difference between the two to be honest.”

-Dr. Poosh Bandoo, Asst. CMO

“Amazing,” Brad replied. “And you designed it yourself?”

Lt. Cmdr. Dr. Brad Walker
Chief of Staff

Poosh looked back up to meet Doctor Walker’s eyes. “I did. Because of my unique circumstances I had what I’ve heard called an unfair advantage. By the time I finished my education, I’d had more hands on experience than most practicing cyberneticists. It is my testbed. I’ve used it to make many improvements over the years, including the nerve lattice I just described.” His eyes flicked to the Captain. “Speaking of which, I was hoping to discuss a few modifications to the arm that are not strictly standard to Starfleet. At your convenience, of course.”
