Ana’s handshake was surprisingly firm as she grasped Grayson’s hand briefly and then let it drop. She returned to her seat, sitting formally near the front edge of the chair and clasping her hands together on her desk as she listened to the response. “I enjoy romance novels,” she commented without much emotion behind it. “Do you have any questions about your role on the Ogawa?”

Dr. Darren, Psychiatrist

Grayson found the segue a bit awkward, but she appreciated Ana’s attempt to get to know something about her personally. Still, Grayson got the impression, perhaps wrongly, that it wasn’t something the other psychiatrist was accustomed to. She wanted to further inquire about Darren’s interest in romance novels, finding the response intriguing giving her impression of the woman so far, but she decided that would be a conversation for another time, especially when she moved on. “I just wanted to clarify the way psychiatric services are administered here on the Ogawa. Naturally, I understand we are responsible for providing emotional support and mental health treatment to members of the crew and others we may encounter during our missions, but I am wondering, because the Ogawa is mobile, do we primarily provide mental health treatment in the short term when it comes to members outside the crew? It appears we have fairly extensive facilities for treating mental health disorders as well as other medical concerns, and I just wondered if any of our patients are long-term patients who aren’t considered part of the crew?” Grayson was familiar that with nonmedical ships, anyone requiring long-term medical or psychiatric treatment, crew or non-crew, usually were transferred off ships to stationary facilities. She wondered if the procedures were the same here despite the extensive facilities.

Ana resisted the urge to let out a small sigh of relief as Grayson latched onto discussing how the Ogawa was run. While she’d conducted plenty of these… sessions… with crew members by this point, the idea of speaking to another psychiatrist was slightly disconcerting, especially after how poorly her own meeting with Dr. Reez had gone when she had reported to the ship. Keeping the conversation geared toward such topics was a relief, to not put too fine of a point on it. “We do not have any long term patients with serious illnesses at this time,” she replied, her voice steadying as they hit more familiar territory for her. “There’s always the chance that we could encounter someone during an assignment that requires such care and we would then collaborate with the other medical personnel on board the ship to see that their mental health is appropriately treated.” She paused a moment to gather her thoughts.

“We would be expected to provide short term care to anyone outside of the crew as well as the civilians on board the ship. There are several, including children.” A slight twinge of fondness entered her voice as she mentioned the children on board, thinking of the Captain’s brother and the XO’s daughter among others that she had encountered. She would rather work with the teens any day. “We do have a few crewmembers that are required to meet with one of us on a regular basis,” she added. “I’ll make sure to flag their files for you so that you can begin to assist in their follow-ups.” Her head tilted to the side as her voice trailed off, although her eyes didn’t quite meet Grayson’s, as she waited to see if the woman had any questions so far.

Dr. Darren, CoP

Grayson took note Darren wasn’t quite looking her in the eye, which only reinforced her sense there was some awkwardness between them. Mariah couldn’t think of a reason she would be a source of discomfort. She wondered if Darren’s behavior was a reflection of a particularly difficult mission or event before Mariah’s arrival. Obviously she didn’t know Darren well enough to ask about her personal well-being, but as her ostensible right hand, Grayson felt an obligation to establish a closer professional relationship between them. After all, if the senior mental health professionals couldn’t confide in one another, who could they confide in? For now, however, she decided to approach things from a more neutral direction. “Very good. I of course don’t wish you to reveal anything confidential and I will review those files you’ve flagged in more depth, but I wonder if you could give me more information about the general issues those crewmembers are dealing with? I’m particularly interested to know if there is any mission related event or ship wide experience affecting the entire crew I should know about?”
