(snip)

Dr Jarvis looked in more detail at the Scan of what remained of Ensign Hart’s heart. The Commander was right, there was not enough left to save the organ, a transplant would be the only option. “I suppose we had better replicate a new heart and several units of blood and prepare for surgery.” With that, he strode over to the lab’s replicator and programmed it to produce one artificial (human) heart and several units of blood. Walker may have had the rank, but this was his domain. Not only was this a surgical procedure, but a cardio one; his speciality. That being said, should Hart’s brain prove to be unsalvageable, he wouldn’t mind having a crack at replacing it with positronic circuitry.

Brad grinned, and pulled a tray of surgical instruments from the biobed. “You can have the lead, Doctor,” he said, glad that Jarvis had at least somewhat come around to his way of thinking here. While he worked, he’d ponder the problem of how to deal with the apparent brain death. A cortical stimulator would be the obvious first step, but if that didn’t produce results…

The doors opened to Medlab 3 to let in three people. Zoi Haven, the COS, came in first followed by Erika Cruz and a security crewman. She was surprised to see that the body had not been autopsied and that it seemed to be that Dr Walker was planning on performing surgery. The first comment in her mind came right out of her mouth. “I thought Ensign Hart was dead?”

“Hmm, I guess I forgot to re-lock the door,” Brad said sotto voce as he looked up to see the newcomers.

“Funnily enough, it appears as though he’s only mostly dead,” he told them.

Erika ventured forth, her bravado and provocative smile disappearing instantly. “Mostly?” she said in a quiet, almost haunted voice as she drew closer, her eyes fixed on Hart’s face. Whatever the being was in reality, the manifestation that was Cruz was desperately trying to hold her emotions back, her body notably tense.

“Mostly,” Brad replied. “We’re about to replace his heart and the pint or two of blood he’s lost. Then it’s just a ‘simple’ matter of reigniting the barely-there, blink-and-you’d-miss-it spark of life in his brain, but I’m focusing on one life-threatening problem at a time.”

Gordon stepped into the room, glancing back over his shoulder to check the passage way behind him before the door shut. As he turned back into the room he slammed to a stop, he spotted a body on a bio bed and....what appeared to be…a human heart?

“Did they just say they’re replacing a mostly dead persons heart?” He said aloud to no one in particular, his face was beginning to turn a bit green. He was starting to question his choice of a hospital ship as his first tour of duty…
