Side Sim: The One Where Doctor Bandoo Boards the Ogawa

(snip)

Ana had started to tune out the discussion between the two doctors, taking the time to mentally review the reports that she needed to file in her new position as Chief of Psychiatry. The last question by Walker interested her, though, and she felt herself leaning forward to hear Bandoo’s answer. Her eyes wandered down to the prosthetic again and then back to its creator with a new gleam of interest. The idea of solving one’s own problem like this intrigued her. “Is that why you went into cybernetics?” she broke in, her voice soft and slightly hesitant, but without care that her question could be considered slightly insensitive.

Dr. Darren, CoP

Poosh’s smile widened as he met Darren’s eyes. “Very astute. I spent a lot of time in medical facilities and under the care of many doctors and many cyberneticists. The entire process fascinated me. It was only natural that I went into the field.” A funny thought crossed his mind and he smirked. “You could almost say I was hatched for it.”

The humor was beyond Ana and so she did not respond to it other than to briefly permit the eye contact and then switch her gaze to a point over Bandoo’s right… shoulder? Abruptly, she added another query. “Did you find the cyberneticists you encountered to be lacking?”

Darren, CoP

“Not at all. They were quite adept, inspiring really. I wanted to follow their example, not replace them.” He turned his head slightly to take in the spot behind his shoulder that Darren was looking at. Seeing nothing there his eyes flicked to the Dentist and then back to Darren. “What inspired you to take up Psychiatry?”

-Dr. Poosh Bandoo, Asst. CMO

Ana’s head tilted to the side in interest as she listened to his response. Dr. Bandoo seemed remarkably well-adjusted to the deficit he’d suffered and supporting others had given him a similar path in life. Her research across species indicated that a type of exclusionary behavior, especially in the presence of a differentiating characteristic, was remarkably common in adolescence, but it seemed as though this was not present in the Ool. She made a mental note to follow up more thoroughly to see if Bandoo’s experience was typical of his species; the Ool were not yet a common presence in Starfleet and so the sample size for even qualitative research was limited. When her train of thought came back to the room that she was currently in, she noticed Bandoo staring at her expectantly and realized that she had likely missed her turn in the expected conversation. She forced herself to think back and finally recalled the question she had heard uttered while lost in her thoughts.

“Comparative neuroscience is a fascinating subject,” she replied tersely with the slightest hint of defensiveness. Anyone could place that her age and the characteristic appearance of her species meant she had grown up during a difficult time in Betazed’s history. There was likely more to that story, should anyone choose to push on it.
