There are certain instictual behaviors that indicated a Caitan female was Pregnant. Digging or building a den. Antisocial behavior and strange appetites were the time honored classics. As was typical her Mate recognied the danger and as was usual retreated hastily from being near her. In this case he as a civilian teacher chose to use all of his accumulated vacation time and the Paternity time he would be elegable for to visit his family on Cait. It meant he would be gone over a year but such pregnancy retreats were part of Caitan culture out of nessesity. She tolorated him till the shuttle finally left.
If M’Nalie had been tempermental and prone to anger issues before her pregnancy she was a lit fuse as it progressed.. Shecompensated by being cloying sweet in a sarcastic manner or avoiding coworkers completely. She did not talk about being pregnant to anyone and even Lippscotte was baffled over the changed behavior assuming it was because of her apparent ababdonment by her mate. This was in fact a textbook example of when a CNS ougt to intervene Lipscotte would be heard to remark frequently.
M’Nalie of course would never go near the CNS office. Her dispute with Lt. Darren had never been properly resolved and she turned a deaf ear on any mention of tge CNS department.
M’Nalie was reluctant to see a doctor as well. The doctors on the ship were all specialists in fields unrelated to pregnancy. And worst of all they were all male. She tried really hard not to look down on males and to treat them as her equals. But her pregnancy was a line she would not, could not cross. No male involvement was permissible.
.
M’Nalie finally made her way to sickbay and asked not for any doctor but for Nurse Pillar.

Ensign M’Nalie Eshenti. Engineer.

Pilar was sitting at one of the desks when M’Nalie entered “Ensign, how can I be of assistance?” She asked standing up and moving over.

Head Nurse

M’Nalie was relieved that she did not have to deal with to many people to find the person she wanted, she was what could only be discribed as a emotional roller coaster at the moment. “Nurse O’Keefe. Can we talk in private?”, She said her rumbling tone serious. “I have need of advice of a nature that I can not and will not discuss with the /MALEs/, who dominate your profession on this ship.”, she rumbled her tone nearly a growl as she mentioned the opposite gender.

Pilar nodded and took M’Nalie to a private room “Ensign what’s going on?” She asked as she took out a tricorder and waited to see what M’Nalie had to say.

O’Keefe (Head Nurse)

M’Nalie was not the sort who beat around the bush and she didn’t this time either, “There are behavioral, and emotional indicators that I have noticed in myself that in combination seem to indicate that I ami pregnant.”, she said her tone becoming rumbling and purry. She paused for a moment, “This is of course planned for and desirable and my mother will be overjoyed when I inform her after the kittens are born. “, she continued in as matter a fact a voice as she could manage while purring like a tractor.
“My species. Unlike the smaller more common genetically modified sub-species most are more familiar with often has difficulty during childbirth and fatality can result at a higher rate than one would expect givenu modern medical knowledge.”, and the purring died out as she became very serious. “My insticts will dominate my behavior as I near my time. I will seek isolation and it will be dangerous for anyone to come near to me particularly for males. That is instinct and tradition. This will be further complicated by the fact that my mate is a member of the more common sub-species. Our mating was required to ratify a thousand year old treaty. But dispite that I find him worthy Of affection. In the case where I should be at risk, The Kittens survival is all that matters. They are the hope of my species future.”, and M’Nalie sighed heavily. Managing to look dispite her size strength , warrior scars and demeanor as scared and uncertain as any first time mother to be. “You O’K’eef, Are my only hope. For no male can see the birth least the Kittens be cusrsed. A old and likely stupid belief that I must insist be adhered to at all costs because I am the daughter of a Matriarch and my daughters must eventually inherit leadership should they desire it.” And she sighed again.

Ensign M’Nalie Eshenti. Engineer.

Pilar listened as M’Nalie spoke “Okay, so let me get this straight, you might be pregnant and no males should really be tending to your medical needs?” She was calm and patient as she summarized the information that had just been shared with her “Well, the first thing we need to find out is if you are indeed pregnant. So let’s start there.” She said as she picked up the tricorder “Go ahead and have a seat on the biobed and we’ll get you sorted out.” She said with a slight smile.

Head Nurse

M’Nalie seated herself as directed, and sighed, ” Religion and Tradition. The cornerstone of everything stupid in a society. But I have no choice but to respect them because my marriage, my pregnancy and the lives of the Kittens will hinge on them being acceptable to the hardliners in my clan. Just as I am the daughter of a Matriarch my offspring will be as well. Only since I left the clans land I can not and have no desire to take my mothers place. What I do know is any female offspring will be raised by my mother who will likely never bother to tell them about me. I did mention my particular offshoot of Caitan’s tend towards multiple births. Usually even numibers . Though odd numbers happen and if the odd one is female it is considered lucky. Single births are rare. You know I was trying to get pregnant and even so. Theres a certain sence of surprise that it happened.”, M’Nalie said in a soft tone speaking more to fill the silence than to say anything meaningful.
