Having some time on her hands, Riani had decided to check out the science labs on the Starbase. The moment she stepped into the main lab, she felt like coming home even though she’d never been on Starbase 157 in her life. There was something comforting about the similarity of science labs. And other than people, labs were predictable and didn’t ask unwanted questions. Her sole focus on the equipment, the young Ensign moved slowly and methodically around the lab; exploring every inch of it.

Saatynn sat at a corner table, one PADD propped up against a random device, another one sitting to one side, and a third one directly in front of him, which he was currently making notes on, seemingly oblivious to Riani.

It wasn’t till Riani reached that particular corner, that she realized that she wasn’t alone in the lab. In fact, she was startled to see the other officer that a soft noise - something akin to a mouse being stepped on - escaped her lips. Almost instantly her cheeks turned crimson and her expression turned from startled to embarrassed, if not mortified. She hoped against hope that he hadn’t heard her make that embarrassing noise, but since he was clearly Vulcan it was unlikely that he’d missed it. Not knowing what to say, the Bajoran woman just looked at him, while she reached subconsciously behind her back and started to fidget with the end of her long braid.

Saatynn heard her, and glanced up with his eyes only, a movement she probably wouldn’t see. He saw the look of her face and decided to pretend he didn’t hear it. Instead he looked up and at the PADD in front of him, and then gave her a curious look as thought he hadn’t seen her. “Oh hi, am I in your way at all?” He offered her a small smile–an instant clue he wasn’t a normal Vulcan–as he spoke.

For some reason that smile made her feel even more uncomfortable and for a couple of moments Ria just stood there and started at the other scientist. Eventually, she said, “Uhm, … no … not at all. I just thought I’d … have a look around … I’m new … uhm …” Remembering that introducing herself was probably expected, she added, “Ensign Iyun Riani…” Her voice trailed off and she wondered if one day she might be less awkward when talking to someone; especially someone she didn’t know yet.

“Saatynn. Bajoran so your surname is Iyun, correct?” He tried to keep his tone friendly, while it was irritating to have his work interrupted, he didn’t mind that much, unlike some of his race might.

Ria nodded and for the first time since suddenly realizing that she wasn’t alone in the lab after all the hint of a smile tugged at the corners of her lips. People regularly forgot that in her culture the family name was said first. So having someone remember that was nice and helped putting her ever so slightly at ease.

Looking down at her feet while still playing with her raid behind her back, Riani pondered what to do. Should she just excuse herself and leave? That would certainly ease her discomfort. Yet even though didn’t always come across as such, she was curious by nature and had a longing to figure out and understand everything around her. So she plugged up her courage and after taking a deep breath, asked, “Are you… uhmm… are you stationed on the Starbase?”

Walking through the entry with a PaDD in hand, Achilleas waved it at his two ensigns. “Afternoon folks. Nice of them to let us borrow a lab huh?”

CSO Petrakos

At the sound of his voice, Riani instinctively turned her head to look at the CSO, but almost immediately cast down her gaze. “Good afternoon, Sir,” she replied, her voice even softer than normal, her cheeks still flushed.

~Ensign Iyun, Science

“It definitely was, sir.” Saatynn said, before looking back at Riani. “So, Ensign, what’s your specialty?” He figured she’d feel more comfortable talking about science-related stuff.

Feeling immensely grateful, Riani turned her attention back towards Saatynn and gave him a small smile. “I have a major in astrophysics and a minor in both mathematics and theoretical physics. I’m also working on my PhD thesis about dark matter nebula.” And without giving either of the other two officers a chance to say anything she went on into a detailed explanation of the exact topic of her thesis and her findings and analysis of the data she had as of this moment. With each sentence she spoke, she seemed to be more at ease and less timid and frightened. There was a sparkle in her eyes and the smile on her face become more and more genuine. She even stopped fidgeting with her braid and instead started to use her hands quite a bit while talking.

Saatynn was–for once–happy he’d been forced by his father to sit through all the classes on Sarek’s teachings. It was good practice for times like this, when he pretended to be paying attention, and thankfully he had enough knowledge to stay somewhat involved.
