With her medical and psychological evaluation done, there was only one thing left for Riani to do: Reporting for duty with her superior officer! And unlike those aforementioned evaluations, that conversation was actually something she was looking forward to. While she tended to keep to herself, she was excited to meet her new boss and fellow scientists. Not to mention that she couldn’t wait to start working. So it was with quick, almost bouncing steps that she made her way towards the Chief Science Officer’s office.

Upon arrival Ria made sure that her uniform was still in order and her long brown hair still neatly tied back in a French braid. Yet otherwise she didn’t lose any time before pressing the chime next to the door.

A voice came through the intercom, “Come on in.”

Taking one more deep breath and squaring her narrow shoulders, Riani stepped into the office. Without missing a beat, she said, “Ensign Iyun reporting for duty, Sir.” Everything about her seemed to send a double bind; at least to a close observer: she appeared to be glad to be here, yet also hesitant, maybe even reluctant. And while the smile on her face was genuine, it couldn’t fully mask the underlying emotions of … was it sadness? Fear? …?

“Please sit.” Achilleas motioned to the front of his desk, “How was your trip out here? Get settled in alright? I had a heck of a time finding a holodeck, which ended up being occupied, was a very awkward meeting haha.”

Riani moved almost cautiously further into the room, her eyes not really cast down, but definitely not fully meeting Achilleas’ either. Before sitting down on the proffered chair, she automatically reached for her long braid and moved it so that it would fall over her shoulder and down the front of her body instead. Otherwise she’d sit on it.

Once she was sitting, Riani lifted her gaze. While not exactly looking her superior officer in the eyes, she at least looked at him. “Yes, my trip here was uneventful, Sir. As for settling in, I only just arrived today,” she replied, leaving it at that. There was no need to add that it would take her quite a while to settle in and even longer to get the resemblance of feeling at home.

Achilleas nodded in response, “I’m glad that you got here safely. Tell me about yourself. Why science and what is your area of expertise?”

For a few moments Ria chewed on her lower lip, pondering how best to answer or rather where best to start. Eventually she said, “I’ve been interested in science for as long as I can remember. Anything physics related in particular. I don’t know if you had a chance to look at my file yet, but I was born and mostly raised on Deep Space Nine and I was fortunate enough to meet a young science officer when I was still a child who took me under her wing a little. I learned a lot about different science fields that way, that I’m not sure I would have prior to enrolling at the Academy if it hadn’t been for her.” A soft smile started to spread over her face as she remembered that time of her life. “As for my area of expertise: I have a major in astrophysics and a minor in both mathematics and theoretical physics. I’m also working on my PhD thesis on dark matter nebula.” At that her eyes started to sparkle and dived right into what her thesis was about in detail. And it would probably get clear to Achilleas pretty quickly that if he didn’t interrupt her at some point she might go one forever.

Achilleas perked up, “How coincidental! My expertise is likewise astrophysics. My focus is in the interaction of dark energy with stars that prematurely nova. We haven’t detected dark energy yet, same with dark matter, but it’s clear the necessity of their presence for some of the natural laws to stay true.”

“Really?” Ria asked in surprise, almost disbelieve. “Somehow I thought the other scientist on this vessel would be biologist and chemists,” she continued, her cheeks turning crimson in embarrassment once more. In her mind that would make much more sense then astrophysicists. But Starfleet surely knew what they were doing. In the hope that they wouldn’t linger on her silly assumption, she quickly added, “You are right, Sir, we may not have been able to detect either, but yes, the natural laws should be proof alone that both clearly exist. It just means that we have to work further on our methods and instruments to find ways to detect both.”

~Ensign Iyun, Science

Achilleas nodded enthusiastically, “Exactly! I mean there’s certain circumstances where physics doesn’t work like it should but that can be explained, usually. So do you have a research project in mind? I’d like to get everyone working on something related to their expertise when we’re not tasked with something by the Captain.”

CSO Petrakos

Ria tilted her head slightly to the left and fiddled a little with the end of her braid, as she said thoughtfully, “Well, on the top of my list is finishing my PhD and I feel like I should broaden my knowledge in other fields; those that might be needed more on a medical vessel like the Ogawa. Biology in particular is my weak point and I thus should put some effort into changing that.”

Achilleas nodded again as Ria detailed her plans. A thought occurred to him that he decided to voice, “Then since you plan to finish your Doctorate first, I’ll help coordinate an appropriate research project that you can use in your dissertation. This way you gain some practical experience while also using what results from the project in your dissertation data. As for biology and all, one of our fellow scientists happens to be a xenobiologist. Wouldn’t hurt to see if he’ll do a workshop for us. I wouldn’t mind sitting in on that.”
