Willow listened intently. She nodded a few places where it was appropriate to do so in a conversation and raised her eyebrows. ”A medical ship is not always easy to command, it’s like being an administrator for a hospital AND a starlet command officer at the same time.” she laughed again ” I had a feeling this might be a little bit of a birth by fire for you but if you’re experienced in psychiatry then I’m sure we will balance out alright.”

“That was my thought,” Dira said with a light laugh. “And it made sense that they switched up plans and sent me here. I mean… obviously, right? You don’t need to have a health background to run a medical ship but it certainly make it easier.”

She sipped again. ”My background is medical, I was a cardio thoracic surgeon, specialising in paediatrics.” she said.

Her ebony eyes assessed Tyalor. “Do you miss it?” she asked simply.

Willow looked at her. “Believe it or not I miss the simplicity of surgery yes.” She said honestly. “However, I love my job and I wouldn’t give it up.” She said and couldn’t quite quell the thought of again that crossed her mind followed by an image in her minds eye of her brother. She pushed the thought away.

“So, you were watching the ceremony. Did you get a good look at the crew.” She said with a smile.

“I did. Just wanted to match names and faces where I could and get a sense of where everyone as a whole was at. There seems to be a good bit of bonding for the most part, where other elements are more… disjointed. Not a bad thing, and certainly not unexpected given how rocky some of your recent assignments have been. Plus you have new crew joining as well.”

Dira took a sip of her drink, set it down and then leaned forward, resting her elbows on her thighs. “Look, I’m a pretty straight-shooter. I tell it like I see it whenever it makes sense to. And there is enough to have piqued my curiosity. Not a bad thing, but as a psychiatrist, I’m going to have to temper my urge to roll up my sleeves and fix things. That isn’t my job. Not in the way it was before. But we’ve got work ahead of us Willow. The Ogawa had a good crew, it’s just a little at odds. I could see that rather quickly.”

“What’s your biggest fear with the Ogawa, honestly?” Myqian asked.

Commander Myqian, XO

Willow listened and considered. Her personnel fears seemed to center around her brother and the ex con they had in sickbay. On her ruined relationship and wether it was worth it…her professional ones....

“We seem to have had a bit of bad luck truth be told. I think as you say that my biggest fear is that we haven’t fully managed to come together as a crew before there’s been changes and things. But what you should know about me is that I am fiercely proud of my crew Commander.”

“Good. You should be,” she said sincerely. “And I could tell that at the ceremony too.”

“I might only know the surface details, but I do know you have additional stresses. More, personal ones. But I’m not your therapist. I’ll happy talk through it with you at any point, but I want to try to be careful not to confuse my roles here. I’ll admit that that is going to be my challenge going forward. I can’t stop thinking like a psychiatrist and seeing the clues people leave in abundance, but I know I have to see beyond that.” She smirked a little. “I’m a bit nervous about that, actually.” Willow seemed a reasonably open person, at least on the surface, but even Dira knew that the more open book CO needed to maintain some sense of mystique when it comes to their authority. Otherwise, it’s impossible to be the leader a crew needs. And this crew, especially, needed it’s leaders now more than ever.

Willow held her glass up. “Well, here’s to a working relationship where we build on each other’s strengths and cover each other’s weaknesses.” She said and drank from her glass.
