In-Between Places - Endings and Beginnings

“Family is incredibly important.” She said, a hint of wistfulness and sadness in her own tone. She took a breath and turned as the corridor branched to the right. She smiled at the musing. There were a wide variety of ships doing a wide variety of work throughout the quadrant. Indeed, Zoi herself had served in many different capacities as Chief of Security and she wondered why the young woman thought she would never serve on a medical ship. “Oh? Why might that be?”

There was no judgement in her tone, just mild curiosity to know why serving on a medical ship had not entered the woman’s mind.

Ria’s cheeks turned slightly pink and she looked kind of sheepish as she replied, “Well, … I guess I thought scientist on board a medical vessel are most likely to be biologist or chemist. And I mean, … sure as every science officer I had to learn all of that as well. But my major is in astrophysics and I have minors in mathematics and theoretical physics. So … yeah …” She shrugged her shoulders while still fiddling with her braid behind her back. Realizing that it might sound as if she didn’t like her assignment, she hastily added, “Not that I mind being here, though. On the contrary.” By now her cheeks were glowing and she felt like she was very successfully digging her own grave.

Zoi smiled kindly. “That makes sense, but even medical ships need astrophysicists. If we come upon an anomaly in space, or find ourselves lost in some unknown area of space, your expertise will be most needed. I have found that in all my years serving in Star Fleet, you never know what might be important on board. Don’t sell yourself short.”

“I didn’t think of that,” Ria admitted sheepishly as they kept walking along the corridor. “It does make sense, though.” After a short pause she added hesitantly, “I - I guess I assumed medical ships would usually be part of a group of ships…” Her voice trailed off and for second her eyes flickered towards Zoi, before her gaze rested once more on the floor.

The Chief of Security smiled gently and nodded. It was an easy assumption to make for a new crewmember straight from the academy, especially if they were not in security or command. She turned once more and then stopped at a door… 3rd down the corridor on the left. “Sometimes they are. Sometimes they are not. Often if a ship such as ours is out on its own, its because we are mobile response units in the area; not called until we are needed so I imagine you will get quite a bit of study time in astrophysics while aboard.”

“This is your quarters. I do not believe your bunk mate will have arrived yet. We are still bringing in crew. If you feel a bit lost about the ship, I recommend you look up the ship’s specs to get an idea of what it will be like. Also socialize. There are plenty of our crew running around. They can tell you about life on board and what to expect.” The Ensign’s down cast and unsure demeanor contrasted greatly with Zoi’s confidence and upright demeanor due to her many years of service and expertise yet she endeavored to be kind, respectful and helpful to the new recruit.

“If you have any special needs for your quarters on board the Ogawa, Lt. Robert Mason is the Chief Engineer and can accommodate whatever you might need.”
