Willow’s green eyes met The Doctor’s searching gaze but she measly smiled as if she couldn’t be happier for him and clapped as she handed him the box and Brad offered Jasper his hand. “Congratulations you get to be part of starfleet after all Jarvis, I’m sure you’re going to find things much easier to understand and follow as one of the officer ranks. Doctor Marshall and Doctor Walker will keep you right I am sure.” She said and turned back to the group,

“As I said at the beginning of the presentations, department merits and notes of commendation have been notes in all of your records. I would also like to add my personal thanks to you all for your work and company on the Ogawa. And while I know that we will be on Starbase for some time while repairs are happening I would like to assure you again this is only a short term arrangement. So please spend time with your families and take some rest. For the rest of this evening please, enjoy the meal about to be served and one another’s company.”

She stepped back and gave one last nod of her head to everyone before stepping down and joining Cai at the table for their meal.

Oscar, who had not taken a seat during the entire situation, realized that he was about to be forced to sit with people whom he had never met. He was definitely going to enjoy the food, but then, he was going to find the bar, down whatever the most disgusting concoction the bartender could invent. (One time, at Oscar’s request, a bartender had invented a Bloody Mary that used cocktail sauce instead of tomato juice, shave pickled ginger instead of horseradish, cayenne pepper instead of black pepper, 10 Alarm Fiery Red Hot Sauce instead of Tabasco, soy sauce instead of Worcestershire, sea salt instead of cucumber salt, tangerine slices instead of lime and lemon wedges, and gin instead of vodka. It was disgusting, as expected, and Oscar had actually managed to compliment the man at his skill, albeit by saying, “This is one of the worst drinks I’ve ever tasted.”)

He lazily wandered to a table that seemed to be lightly occupied and hoped that he would be able to eat his meal in peace. Of course, he could always complain about the quality of the meal to his companions, if he had any.

The colour draining from her face, Riani looked around the room. She hadn’t moved an inch since entering and had hoped she could spend this whole event standing with her back against the wall while trying to be invisible. If they were all supposed to sit down and have a meal together, that was clearly not going to be an option. But where should she sit? There were very few people she knew and she felt like she hadn’t left a great first impression with either of them. Maybe if she waited long enough there wouldn’t be an empty seat left and she could just go? Or maybe no one would notice her standing here? Yet part of her also wanted to sit down with her fellow crewmembers. She wanted to get to know them. That was the only way she’d stop being so anxious. If only she could bring herself to actually move.

Willow looked up and saw the Ensign looking a bit worried. She stood and smiling gestured to her table where only Cai sat for now. “Why don’t you join us Ensign.” She said indicating the seat.

Her eyes widened and for a moment Ria forgot to breath. Sitting with the Captain was … terrifying, yet she could hardly say no. So gathering all her courage she nodded and smiled shyly as she made her way towards the Captain’s tale.

Cai, seeing her invite others took the opportunity to More or less grab Jasper as he wandered past them. “Would you like to sit with us too Doctor Jarvis?” He asked indicating an empty seat beside him.

As she arrived at the table, the petite woman stood at parade rest. Though anyone seeing her back would notice that she was nervously fiddling with her long hair. “Ensign Iyun Riani. It’s nice to meet you, Captain, and thank you for inviting me to sit with you. I hope I won’t be a bother.”

If he could have blanched, Oscar’s face would have drained of all possible color. As it was, his hair, which the fungal infection had made a little more reactive to his body chemistry and muscular tension, flattened reflexively against his skull. He had sat opposite a single individual who seemed a bit young - late adolescence, if Oscar had to guess - to be at a Starfleet party, and therefore, Oscar had hoped, unlikely to have company of any import. Suddenly, he was now at the same table as the Captain, albeit on the opposite side from her. Oscar had a way with CO’s - they always managed to appreciate him more than his direct superiors, though the Petty Officer (Make that Chief Petty Officer, Oscar thought to himself) had about as much care for the personable nature a Captain as he did for a Lieutenant (j.g.).

The problem was that that flippant attitude for the chain of command meant that he was, against all intuition, almost in a better situation to socialize with the CO than if they were actually on duty. He never tried nor wanted to make a good first impression, but somehow, his direct manner made people think, at least initially, that instead of the curmudgeon that he really was, Oscar was taken to be (how did the CO of the USS Gander put it?) “refreshingly candid”.

Pilar and Derrick watched the awards and promotions and applauded the accomplishments of those that received one. As the evening began to wind down, the couple finished their meal and returned to their temporary quarters to prepare for the evenings rest.

Drake watched and applauded, considering the back patting involved in a giant party like this. Then again, what else did they have to do?

When the ceremony had started, Zoi took Mariah’s offer to sit with her at her table. She had not planned on sitting anywhere in particular and the offer was gladly accepted. She gave applause whenever necessary. It was always good to see someone get a promotion when it was well deserved. Zoi was still getting to know the crew but she liked what she saw of them. Returning to the role of Chief of Security was a comfortable and easy transition for her due to the many times she had held the post.

As the ceremony ended, she turned to Mariah and smiled. “Short and sweet. I love it when Captains are not overly verbose during ceremonies. I wonder what the food will be?”

Haven, CoS

Mariah chuckled. “I don’t disagree. I admire a commanding officer who focuses on her people.” She placed a hand against her mouth and offered in a loud stage whisper, “I like the food too. Shall we go check it out?”
