It was only when asked the question that Dr Jarvis paid Darren any heed, although he still did not bother to look up at her. “Did you know that in the earliest chess writings, the colours of the sides were often termed red and black, as those were the most common inks available when drawing the diagrams?” Closing the book over, he sat it back on the shelf. However, instead of turning to acknowledge her, he wandered further into the book store. “So, a construct of the imagination it is then, at least in part,” he muttered, more to himself than to the Counsellor, “many of these texts are modern publications.” He picked another off the shelf. “Quite the romantic, aren’t you. Tell me, do you squirrel yourself away in here and read one of these heart-throbbing tales when your latest date ends in disaster? Delve into the pages of a fantasy where things work out right and wonder why they never do for you?”

Unwilling to give him the satisfaction of any kind of reaction, Ana hastily sat down beside the white-colored pieces. “I’ll take white then,” she murmured, almost inaudibly, and then stared expectantly at the doctor to take his seat so that they could begin with the game. She noticed the smallest twinges of discomfort in her stomach, realizing that perhaps it would have been better to proceed onward with the plan of zip-lining instead of attempting to meet the doctor somewhere in the middle. She had shown weakness by ceding to him in that manner, she noted to herself critically. Her dark eyes narrowed slightly and she responded with a simple and uninterpretable, “no.”

Though she had murmured, Dr Jarvis’ sharp ears picked up her decision to take white. While there had been a fifty-fifty chance she would have picked that colour, he pondered whether there was some psychological significance. White and black were inseparably assigned right and wrong… good and evil. Was this her characterising him as the ‘evil’ one out of them? He put the trashy romance novel he was holding back on the shelf and continued wandering around the room, eyes focused on the counsellor’s construct, rather than the woman herself; it was far more likely to tell him things about her than she would. Eventually, he replied, “as a member of Star-Fleet, do you consider yourself to be on the white side?”

As Jarvis wandered the room, Ana let out a noisy sigh of annoyance at his refusal to join her at the chess board. She moved the chair out that she stood beside and sank down into it, stiffly positioning herself on the very lip of the seat and folding her hands in her lap. She studied the board in front of her again, beginning to visualize how her preferred openings might work against the strategies that she expected Jarvis to employ. Perhaps if she had use for her telepathic abilities, she might have understood where Jarvis’ question came from, but instead, her head snapped up with a shake of her black hair. “My uniform is trimmed in teal, not white,” she responded irately, with a hint of. confusion creeping in as well.
