<Snippy snip>

The room had not been overly large, so every word the crewman and ensign said was fairly easy to hear for anyone in their general vicinity. The new Chief had let them have their illusion of being unheard until she had given her general orders out and had opened the floor to questions. Instead of asking any of the questions that had been whispered though, Crewman Muir asked her a completely new one.

She nodded, choosing to address this one first. “To answer the question that you spoke aloud, yes… we will have Starbase personnel around today. None of them should be on decks 1-3 without a security escort or senior staff escort. Turbolifts will not go to decks 1-3 for anyone from the Starbase unescorted. If you find someone who is unaccompanied, you are to detain them and inform me immediately.”

“Ma’am, yes ma’am....” he said half to himself as he tapped a few additional notes into his PaDD. He knew that he wouldn’t be the only person running around from security and the bridge would probably be swarming with officers so if he was stuck he knew there would always be someone there to ask. However this double edged sword usually meant there was usually someone who would be curious as to his ability “test” him on what he was doing, as officers and senior crew often did.

She grinned then, “As for your other questions. The highest priority is always the Bridge. However, I want the work done Deck by Deck starting with Deck 1. Systematically, you will do all of the tasks I have outlined as you go. Divvy up the work as you like, but you as a team will be responsible for the work. Finish all tasks for the space you are working in and then lock that space down. You should know this process from your time in the academy if nothing else. If you don’t know the basics of a thorough clearing and securing deck by deck, you need to see me for remedial training.” Her cold blue gaze fell directly on Muir. “Let me know.”

Gordon stopped froze when she mentioned other questions, he looked up and realised he was under the steely glint of the Chief of Security....and she was giving him a less than subtle reminder of not to speak in briefings. “Ma’am, yes Ma’am!” he said almost by reflex, it was like being at Crewmen training again. He didn’t dare comment on the fact he didn’t attend Starfleet Academy on Earth…officers tended to forget that crew training was different.

Then she moved on to his friend. “Ensign Shran, I can always add Tundra training. I will make a note.”

The older Andorian didn’t appear phased, which shocked Gordon. “Ma’am, thank you ma’am.” he simply replied, not correcting the rank.

Once again she returned her attention to the room at large, not picking on any one person just as she had in the briefing. “In the future, if you have legitimate questions during a briefing, I would rather you spoke them aloud when I ask for questions from my staff rather than whispering. We are a team here and you never know if someone else has the same questions you have. Do not be afraid to ask for details on procedures, though a good guide for all of you is that I am a by the book kind of person. I find Star Fleet has a very good process to begin with and I only differ from it when I feel it necessary for the situation.”

“Any other questions?”

Haven, CoS

Gordon shook his head and slotted the PaDD he carried into a pocket on his uniform. He unconsciously checked the weapon at his holster, a habit he had picked up during his training. Better to feel its awkward bulk than not and face a rather unpleasant reminder of equipment accountability from a senior.
