(snip)

How a person responded to the invitation and how and when they showed up or made an appointment told Dira a lot of things about them. In this case, she didn’t have to have read Haven’s file to know at least something about the woman simply from their brief text exchange. For example, she could tell that Haven was open to being social and liked her downtime. Or perhaps the better phrasing was that she understood its importance and how to make the most of it. Knowing the woman was of a long lived species only made that simply make sense, even if it was a generality that she may or may not be able to apply in this case.

Still, a dinner meet-and-greet was a more intimate thing, allowing for a casual sense of letting down boundaries. In her experience, those that were willing to see her outside of her office saw her less adversarially than those that grudgingly came to appointments. But therein lay the thing she had to be careful of: she was no longer a therapist. At least not a practicing one, despite the fact that she fully intended to keep her license active. While she could use her skills and experience to know and understand how and why people were acting as they were, she wasn’t out to treat them. It wasn’t her place anymore. If she saw an issue, at most she could direct them to the practicing therapists on board, even order them to. But that was the line she must not cross, and only time would tell how hard it would be to not step over it.

Stepping into the lovely little establishment, Myqian couldn’t help but smile. It was quirky, and she liked quirky. She had opted for a fitted floral matte satin top in jewel tones, sleeveless and with a flare at the hips, and a simple stretchy skirt in black to the floor. Comfortable, but just formal enough to still understand that while casual, this still was a meeting, even if it was in a much more enjoyable setting.

Moving through the place, she spied Haven quickly and moved to the table. “Zoi?” she asked, knowing it was her, but not wanting to startle her too much in case the other woman’s mind wasn’t focused at the moment.

Zoi stopped pouring her cup and looked up at the Commander. Like herself, the woman was dressed casually, but nicely to reflect the purpose of the meeting. It was interesting that she used Zoi’s first name rather than rank and last name. Taking the queue from her, Zoi nodded and set down the tea kettle. “Yes. You must be Dira. Please, have a seat. Do you like lavendar and pumpkin tea?”

She picked the kettle back up to finish pouring her cup. If Dira liked the tea, she would simply pour the second cup present. If not, she would place it down closer to her so that the XO could order her own preferred drink. As with many people who either interacted with telepaths or were themselves telepaths, Zoi was a locked book. Only her surface thoughts of enjoyment of the drink and place, the comfort of her clothing choices, and the mild excitement of meeting someone new played in her mind for a telepath to read.

As Dira took a seat, she was pleasantly surprised. “I can’t say I’ve ever had it, but I’m always willing to give something a try,” she said with a warm smile. She was, generally, cautious about skimming the thoughts of others, though there were always circumstances where it was either necessary or unavoidable. She allowed herself to be read openly on the surface but had strong shields below that. The openness was one, just who she was, and two, a habit of being a therapist and needing and wanting to be aware of the people around her.

“So, have you been to this cafe much? Any suggestions for food items? I have to admit I forgot lunch and am rather hungry,” Dira said.
